History of Christmas Trees

The history of Christmas trees goes back to the symbolic use of evergreens in ancient Egypt and Rome and continues with the German tradition of candlelit Christmas trees first brought to America in the 1800s. Discover the history of the Christmas tree, from the earliest winter solstice celebrations to Queen Victoria’s decorating habits and the annual lighting of the Rockefeller Center tree in New York City.

How Did Christmas Trees Start?

Long before the advent of Christianity, plants and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for people in the winter. Just as people today decorate their homes during the festive season with pine, spruce, and fir trees, ancient peoples hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows. In many countries it was believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness.

Did you know? Christmas trees are grown in all 50 states including Hawaii and Alaska.

In the Northern hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year falls on December 21 or December 22 and is called the winter solstice. Many ancient people believed that the sun was a god and that winter came every year because the sun god had become sick and weak. They celebrated the solstice because it meant that at last the sun god would begin to get well. Evergreen boughs reminded them of all the green plants that would grow again when the sun god was strong and summer would return.

The ancient Egyptians worshipped a god called Ra, who had the head of a hawk and wore the sun as a blazing disk in his crown. At the solstice, when Ra began to recover from his illness, the Egyptians filled their homes with green palm rushes, which symbolized for them the triumph of life over death.

Early Romans marked the solstice with a feast called Saturnalia in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture. The Romans knew that the solstice meant that soon, farms and orchards would be green and fruitful. To mark the occasion, they decorated their homes and temples with evergreen boughs.

In Northern Europe the mysterious Druids, the priests of the ancient Celts, also decorated their temples with evergreen boughs as a symbol of everlasting life. The fierce Vikings in Scandinavia thought that evergreens were the special plant of the sun god, Balder.

Christmas Trees From Germany

Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles.

Who Brought Christmas Trees to America?

Most 19th-century Americans found Christmas trees an oddity. The first record of one being on display was in the 1830s by the German settlers of Pennsylvania, although trees had been a tradition in many German homes much earlier. The Pennsylvania German settlements had community trees as early as 1747. But, as late as the 1840s Christmas trees were seen as pagan symbols and not accepted by most Americans.

It is not surprising that, like many other festive Christmas customs, the tree was adopted so late in America. To the New England Puritans, Christmas was sacred. The pilgrims’s second governor, William Bradford, wrote that he tried hard to stamp out “pagan mockery” of the observance, penalizing any frivolity. The influential Oliver Cromwell preached against “the heathen traditions” of Christmas carols, decorated trees, and any joyful expression that desecrated “that sacred event.” In 1659, the General Court of Massachusetts enacted a law making any observance of December 25 (other than a church service) a penal offense; people were fined for hanging decorations. That stern solemnity continued until the 19th century, when the influx of German and Irish immigrants undermined the Puritan legacy.

Queen Victoria's Christmas Tree
An illustration from a December 1848 edition of the Illustrated London News shows Queen Victoria and her family surrounding a Christmas tree.Bettmann Archive/Getty Images

In 1846, the popular royals, Queen Victoria and her German Prince, Albert, were sketched in the Illustrated London News standing with their children around a Christmas tree. Unlike the previous royal family, Victoria was very popular with her subjects, and what was done at court immediately became fashionable—not only in Britain, but with fashion-conscious East Coast American Society. The Christmas tree had arrived.

By the 1890s Christmas ornaments were arriving from Germany and Christmas tree popularity was on the rise around the U.S. It was noted that Europeans used small trees about four feet in height, while Americans liked their Christmas trees to reach from floor to ceiling.

The early 20th century saw Americans decorating their trees mainly with homemade ornaments, while the German-American sect continued to use apples, nuts, and marzipan cookies. Popcorn joined in after being dyed bright colors and interlaced with berries and nuts. Electricity brought about Christmas lights, making it possible for Christmas trees to glow for days on end. With this, Christmas trees began to appear in town squares across the country and having a Christmas tree in the home became an American tradition.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

The Rockefeller Center tree is located at Rockefeller Center, west of Fifth Avenue from 47th through 51st Streets in New York City.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree dates back to the Depression era. The tallest tree displayed at Rockefeller Center arrived in 1948. It was a Norway Spruce that measured 100 feet tall and hailed from Killingworth, Connecticut.

The first tree at Rockefeller Center was placed in 1931. It was a small unadorned tree placed by construction workers at the center of the construction site. Two years later, another tree was placed there, this time with lights. These days, the giant Rockefeller Center tree is laden with over 25,000 Christmas lights.

Christmas Trees Around the World

Christmas Trees in Canada
German settlers migrated to Canada from the United States in the 1700s. They brought with them many of the things associated with Christmas we cherish today—Advent calendars, gingerbread houses, cookies—and Christmas trees. When Queen Victoria’s German husband, Prince Albert, put up a Christmas tree at Windsor Castle in 1848, the Christmas tree became a tradition throughout England, the United States, and Canada.

Christmas Trees in Mexico
In most Mexican homes the principal holiday adornment is el Nacimiento (Nativity scene). However, a decorated Christmas tree may be incorporated in the Nacimiento or set up elsewhere in the home. As purchase of a natural pine represents a luxury commodity to most Mexican families, the typical arbolito (little tree) is often an artificial one, a bare branch cut from a copal tree (Bursera microphylla) or some type of shrub collected from the countryside.

Christmas Trees in Great Britain
The Norway spruce is the traditional species used to decorate homes in Britain. The Norway spruce was a native species in the British Isles before the last Ice Age, and was reintroduced here before the 1500s.

Christmas Trees in Greenland
Christmas trees are imported, as no trees live this far north. They are decorated with candles and bright ornaments.

Christmas Trees in Guatemala
The Christmas tree has joined the “Nacimiento” (Nativity scene) as a popular ornament because of the large German population in Guatemala. Gifts are left under the tree on Christmas morning for the children. Parents and adults do not exchange gifts until New Year’s Day.

Christmas Trees in Brazil
Although Christmas falls during the summer in Brazil, sometimes pine trees are decorated with little pieces of cotton that represent falling snow.

Christmas Trees in Ireland
Christmas trees are bought anytime in December and decorated with colored lights, tinsel, and baubles. Some people favor the angel on top of the tree, others the star. The house is decorated with garlands, candles, holly, and ivy. Wreaths and mistletoe are hung on the door.

Christmas Trees in Sweden
Most people buy Christmas trees well before Christmas Eve, but it’s not common to take the tree inside and decorate it until just a few days before. Evergreen trees are decorated with stars, sunbursts, and snowflakes made from straw. Other decorations include colorful wooden animals and straw centerpieces.

Christmas Trees in Norway
Nowadays Norwegians often take a trip to the woods to select a Christmas tree, a trip that their grandfathers probably did not make. The Christmas tree was not introduced into Norway from Germany until the latter half of the 19th century; to the country districts it came even later. When Christmas Eve arrives, there is the decorating of the tree, usually done by the parents behind the closed doors of the living room, while the children wait with excitement outside. A Norwegian ritual known as “circling the Christmas tree” follows, where everyone joins hands to form a ring around the tree and then walk around it singing carols. Afterwards, gifts are distributed.

Christmas Trees in Ukraine
Celebrated on December 25th by Catholics and on January 7th by Orthodox Christians, Christmas is the most popular holiday in the Ukraine. During the Christmas season, which also includes New Year’s Day, people decorate fir trees and have parties.

Christmas Trees in Spain
A popular Christmas custom is Catalonia, a lucky strike game. A tree trunk is filled with goodies and children hit at the trunk trying to knock out the hazel nuts, almonds, toffee, and other treats.

Christmas Trees in Italy
In Italy, the presepio (manger or crib) represents in miniature the Holy Family in the stable and is the center of Christmas for families. Guests kneel before it and musicians sing before it. The presepio figures are usually hand-carved and very detailed in features and dress. The scene is often set out in the shape of a triangle. It provides the base of a pyramid-like structure called the ceppo. This is a wooden frame arranged to make a pyramid several feet high. Several tiers of thin shelves are supported by this frame. It is entirely decorated with colored paper, gilt pine cones, and miniature colored pennants. Small candles are fastened to the tapering sides. A star or small doll is hung at the apex of the triangular sides. The shelves above the manger scene have small gifts of fruit, candy, and presents. The ceppo is in the old Tree of Light tradition which became the Christmas tree in other countries. Some houses even have a ceppo for each child in the family.

Nativagating the Medicare Maze: How to avoid the costly late-enrollment penalties?

Nativagating the Medicare Maze: Simple Tips and 25 Most Commonly Asked Questions

How to avoid the costly late-enrollment penalties?

Medicare has four parts, but not all of them have late enrollment penalties.

There are late enrollment penalties for Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D if a person fails to enroll for Medicare during their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).  For example, if you have credible coverage from a current or former employer or union, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Indian Health Service, TRICARE, or individual health insurance coverage.

Part A late enrollment penalty

People who do not qualify for premium-free Part A and do not purchase it during their enrollment period will see a penalty of 10% of the monthly premium. Regardless of the length of time of delay, the penalty applies, and you will have to pay the higher premium for twice the number of years that you did not sign up. For example, if you were eligible for Part A for three years but did not sign up, you will have to pay the higher premium for six years.

If you do not qualify for premium-free Part A, you can purchase Part A. People who purchase Part A will pay a premium of either $274 or $499 each month in 2022 depending on how long they or their spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes.

If you have to pay a premium for Part A, you can delay Part A until you (or your spouse) stop working or lose that employer coverage. You will NOT pay a penalty for delaying Part A, as long as you enroll within 8 months of losing your coverage or stopping work (whichever happens first).

Most people get Part A free, but some have to pay a premium for this coverage. To be eligible for premium-free Part A, an individual must be entitled to receive Medicare based on his or her own earnings or those of a spouse, parent, or child.

Part B late enrollment penalty

People who do not qualify for premium-free Part B and do not purchase it during their enrollment period will see a penalty of 10% for each 12-month period you could have had Part B, but did not enroll.

This penalty will increase the longer you go without Part B coverage. In many cases, you have to pay the penalty every month for as long as you have Part B. For example, if the IEP ended November 2019, and you waited to sign up for Part B until April 2022, your Part B premium penalty would be 20% of the standard premium.

Part D late enrollment penalty

The cost of the Part D late enrollment penalty depends on how long you went without Part D or creditable prescription drug coverage. Creditable drug coverage includes drug coverage from a current or former employer or union, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Indian Health Service, TRICARE, or individual health insurance coverage. Going 63 days or more without any drug coverage means you will have to pay a penalty if you sign up for Medicare drug coverage at a later point.

The cost of the part D late enrollment penalty is calculated by multiplying 1% of the national base beneficiary premium times the number of full, uncovered months you did not have Part D coverage. The final amount is rounded to the nearest $.10 and added to your monthly premium.

The snowballing effect of these penalties for Part A, Part B, and Part D can really add up to a lot of money. Actually if you do not figure out a plan, it can consume an entire chunk of your Social security benefit payment.

Three ways to avoid the late enrollment penalties

Enroll in Medicare coverage when you are first eligible.

Enroll in Medicare coverage if you lose other creditable coverage.

Keep records showing when you had other creditable coverage, and tell your plan when they ask about it.

Nativagating the Medicare Maze: How Much Does Medicare Cost?

Nativagating the Medicare Maze: Simple Tips and 25 Most Commonly Asked Questions

How Much Does Medicare Cost?

Unless you are receiving extra help, Low Income Subsidy (LIS) or Medicaid.  You will likely pay the Part B premium to Medicare. You may pay other premiums, deductibles, co-pays and co-insurance. The total amount you pay will depend on the type of Medicare plan(s) you choose and the health care services you use during the year. Many people are unaware that Medicare part B is deducted from their Social Security Check monthly. In 2022, it rose to $170.00 from $148.50 in 2021.

The new year of 2022 ushered in a bigger Social Security check for many beneficiaries but with that 5.9% cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, your Medicare part B went from $148.50 in 2021 to $170.00. Although, it does mark the biggest annual increase in about 40 years. The rise in inflation along with the part B increase, it really is not a difference in your money. If anything, you are paying out more with less of a return. You are paying more for everything in 2022!

Navigating Medicare should not be feel like a maze but it can be a complicated and confusing process. The amount of anecdotal information concerning choices for Medicare coverage can be difficult to filter.  I want to help you learn and understand the basic Medicare benefits from the federal government that you are entitled to and have earned as a worker here in the United States. Medicare is complex, and it can often feel overwhelming when you’re learning about Medicare and shopping around for coverage for the first time.  Medicare faces a number of important issues and challenges, perhaps none greater than providing affordable, quality care to an aging population while keeping the program financially secure for future generations. My goal is always the same with everyone or when I am simply writing an article for publication.  I want to provide helpful information about Medicare and protect you from unnecessary spending costs. Those already in Medicare or aging into Medicare should be treated with courtesy, dignity and respect at all times. Of course, I won’t be able to answer all the questions in one simple book with only 25 of the most commonly asked questions.

This book is meant to help you sift through some of the noise to get the information you need.

The best overall quick reference guide to understanding your Medicare options.
In this book, you will learn numerous need-to-know gems. Many people are unaware of the dangers that fall at their feet when they decide to retire. If you are not prepared, you can be penalized tremendously. It is shocking what may lay ahead after you have worked all these years paying your taxes as a good American citizen. Try not to be fooled or dismayed! As a licensed agent, I was absolutely shocked at what may lie ahead for our precious seniors. The snowballing effect of these penalties for Part A, Part B, and Part D can really add up to a lot of money. If you do not figure out a plan, it can consume an entire chunk of your social security benefit payment.

Nativagating the Medicare Maze: Medicare Part D

Nativagating the Medicare Maze: Simple Tips and 25 Most Commonly Asked Questions

Does any Part D drug plan fully cover the donut hole?

The coverage gap is limited by design. In 2006, when Medicare Part D drug plans first became available, only a select few carriers offered plans that covered both generic and brand name drugs during the coverage gap, or the donut hole. Keep in mind, there are fantastic carriers that offer a better discount than what your plan can offer you too. In some cases, your drug coverage could cost you more than what the local Walmart or Drug store charges for medications. The best idea is to always call and shop around even if you currently have a drug plan. Certain carriers will require prior authorization or impose quantity limits on some of your prescriptions.

Types of Medicare Advantage

Baseline Benefit Questions to ask if you are considering a MAPD plan

What is a MOOP?

A MOOP is a cap on your spending with a Medicare advantage plan. This cap in spending is meant to protect you and keep your spending too much out-of-pocket within one year.

I talk with many people who do not understand what a MOOP is but it is a great, fantastic benefit to protect you, the consumer!

Does traditional Medicare have a maximum out of pocket?

There is no limit on out-of-pocket costs in original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Medicare Advantage plans do have out-of-pocket limits that are varied based on the carriers. Medicare supplement insurance, or Medigap plans, can also help reduce the burden of out-of-pocket costs for original Medicare

Nativagating the Medicare Maze: Simple Tips and 25 Most Commonly Asked Questions

What is Medicare?

On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a new legislation that established the Medicare and Medicaid programs.  It was a bipartisan effort to provide health care and increase financial security for older Americans. Medicare’s main function is a designed to provide health insurance that will assist the nation’s elderly to meet hospital, medical, and other health costs.

Taxpayers through the Social Security Administration fund Medicare. We all pay 1.45% of our earnings into FICA – Federal Insurance Contributions Act – which go toward Medicare. Employers pay another 1.45%, bringing the total to 2.9%.

Medicare is a federal health insurance benefits program for the United States citizens or permanent residents who meet a certain work history requirements:

Age 65 or older

Under age 65 with certain disabilities

All who receive disability benefits from Social security or certain disability benefits from the Railroad retirement Board for no less than 24 months.

Individuals with Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease

People of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) (permanent

Kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant)

Who runs Medicare?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is the federal agency that runs Medicare.

Most Medicare recipients pay monthly premiums. The premium amounts vary based on the income of a Medicare recipient and they the plan they select.

Employees and employers pay a 1.45% tax on employee income each here in the United States. This tax goes to fund Medicare Part A. For many of those who have worked 40 quarters or more, hospital insurance through Part A can be free. However, Part B, medical insurance does have a premium, and the remaining costs of Part B are paid for from general federal government revenues.

Part A – free for most

Part B – $135.50 – $460.50

Part C – enrollment optional, premium varies by plan

Part D – enrollment optional, premium varies by plan
