How to get out of survival mode Tip #6

The importance of your pituitary gland and HAT (hormones, adrenal and thyroid)

(It is a combination of everything.)

Always remember that – hormones, adrenals and thyroid. You MUST treat your adrenals before your thyroid meds will work. When one is out of balance, it can throw the others out of balance too. Understanding of the adrenals glands role in this system can help in understanding the best way to heal the thyroid and autoimmunity.

What were my adrenals glands?

Our adrenals and our thyroid have a strange relationship. They contradict each other all the time. They have a topsy-turvy relationship in which when one thing goes up, the other goes down.  Our adrenals are my “lifesaving” organs because they control our body’s hormones and help me to survive in stressful situations. The adrenals act as the control organs for my “fight or flight” response and secrete many of our most important hormones including: pregnenolone, adrenaline, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and cortisol.

Your adrenals produce over 50 hormones that tell almost every bodily function what they need to be doing. These hormones affect every function, organ and tissue in the body. Eating refined foods and sugars will cause a spike in your blood sugar levels, which in return cause the body to release insulin and as a result the adrenal glands will release more cortisol. When your adrenal glands are compromised this puts your body in a catabolic state. Which means your body is breaking down? Since your thyroid glands controls the metabolic activity of the body, it will attempt to slow down the catabolic state by slowing down your metabolism.

Did you read that last part?

Since your thyroid glands controls the metabolic activity of the body, it will attempt to slow down the catabolic state by slowing down your metabolism.

Adrenal fatigue is more often than none misunderstood as an autoimmune disorder. Adrenal fatigue can impersonate and look like other common illnesses and diseases. Adrenal fatigue can be caused by:

Stressful experiences like death of loved one, divorce or surgery

Exposure to environmental toxins and pollution

Prolonged stress due to financial hardship, bad relationships or work environment, and other conditions that entail feelings of despair

    Negative thinking and emotional trauma

    Lack of sleep

Poor diet and lack of exercise

Unknowingly my adrenals were constantly stressed which set off a chain reaction to my immune system and set up shop for inflammation through my entire body. The adrenal-hypothalamus-pituitary reaction circle controls the release of cortisol. All of my organs and my immunity were being impacted negatively by the resulting continuous hit of cortisol. Actually since my adrenals were out of whack it was causing my hypothyroidism to be much worse than it would be normally. Could this be the reason for my latest diagnosis of Hashimoto’s? Could my weakened adrenal glands be the main reason why I developed a thyroid condition in the 1st place? I felt as if my life was a chaotic world wind of craziness. Yes, I was exhausted mentally, physically and what was that thing called sleep?  Years of poor eating habits and/or chronic stress had finally caught up with me.  All those carbs loaded, over processed, refined foods and sugars had also caused an imbalance in my insulin and cortisol hormones.

According to the Endocrine Society, adrenal fatigue is a myth promoted by health books and alternative medicine websites. “There are no scientific facts to support the theory that long-term mental, emotional, or physical stress drains the adrenal glands and causes many common symptoms,” the society says on the Hormone Health Network website.

The constant abuse that I put on my adrenal glands from the bad eating choices and chronic stress lead to more secretion of cortisol which weaken my adrenal glands and lead to my adrenal fatigue.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are very similar to symptoms of hypothyroidism. People might experience all of these are just a few. Some of the more common ones:

• Extremely tired, especially in the morning

• Find it difficult to obtain quality sleep

• Crave sweet and salty foods

• Feel stressed out most of the time

• Decreased sex drive

What I’ve come to understand is in most cases, a malfunctioning thyroid gland isn’t the actual cause of the problem.  Hypothyroidism has a root cause. 1st you have to start to address the things that have brought you to this point in your life and hopefully so far by reading this book. You are understanding more of what has made you sick and what you need to change to begin the healing process.

The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol: How I beat Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s using clean Keto principles and Holistic functional Medicine

Navigating Medicare should not be feel like a maze but it can be a complicated and confusing process. The amount of anecdotal information concerning choices for Medicare coverage can be difficult to filter.  I want to help you learn and understand the basic Medicare benefits from the federal government that you are entitled to and have earned as a worker here in the United States. Medicare is complex, and it can often feel overwhelming when you’re learning about Medicare and shopping around for coverage for the first time.  Medicare faces a number of important issues and challenges, perhaps none greater than providing affordable, quality care to an aging population while keeping the program financially secure for future generations. My goal is always the same with everyone or when I am simply writing an article for publication.  I want to provide helpful information about Medicare and protect you from unnecessary spending costs. Those already in Medicare or aging into Medicare should be treated with courtesy, dignity and respect at all times. Of course, I won’t be able to answer all the questions in one simple book with only 25 of the most commonly asked questions.

This book is meant to help you sift through some of the noise to get the information you need.

The best overall quick reference guide to understanding your Medicare options.
In this book, you will learn numerous need-to-know gems. Many people are unaware of the dangers that fall at their feet when they decide to retire. If you are not prepared, you can be penalized tremendously. It is shocking what may lay ahead after you have worked all these years paying your taxes as a good American citizen. Try not to be fooled or dismayed! As a licensed agent, I was absolutely shocked at what may lie ahead for our precious seniors. The snowballing effect of these penalties for Part A, Part B, and Part D can really add up to a lot of money. If you do not figure out a plan, it can consume an entire chunk of your social security benefit payment.

From the Author: New Book: The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol: How to get out of survival mode Tip #5- Hormones that control your weight

How to get out of survival mode Tip #5:

Taking back control of those pesky weight hormones

Hormones that control your weight

How to fight those Hormones that control your weight?

Research shows there are 9 hormones that strongly influence your appetite and weight. They are Insulin, Leptin, Ghrelin, Cortisol, Estrogen, Neuropeptide Y (NPY), Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1), Cholecystokinin (CCK) and Peptide YY (PYY).

Welcome to the hormonal party event of your life. Having these powerful chemical messengers in your body work together can increase or decrease your appetite, control your blood sugar, insulin balance, metabolism and decide wither you are burning fat or storing fat. These disrupted hormones make it easy for us to gain weight and begins to store the fat.

When your hormones are in balance you feel amazing but when they’re out of balance, you feel exhausted, out of control, and your metabolism is tanked.

How do we get these hormones under control?

Certainly your diet and lifestyle has a powerful effect on these hormones. There is no secret combination but change. Your body simply can’t heal itself when its full of inflammation, parasites, toxic chemicals, fake foods, heavy metals, pharmaceutical poisons and refined sugars. These things are meant to destroy your health not better it. If you are struggling with obesity or even if you can’t seem to lose that muffin top understand this. You have a hormonal disorder and you may be full of inflammation.

Unless you are taking some sort of prescription medication and this is a side effect from it. (WEIGHT GAIN!) Please if you are taking any sort of medications please do some research on it and see exactly what the side effects are from it. Learn what you are putting in your body.

I have no way of knowing exactly which hormone you have is out of whack but if you start to do the things that I am going to suggest and have suggested so far in this book. Change will be seen and change will happen.

Don’t worry. I will show you what foods you should be eating more of and what you should be avoiding later in the book but if you are allergic to these foods all bets are off. The most important thing is for you to follow a meal plan that is tailored to your personal taste that also includes the foods that will help you achieve goals that won’t spike your blood glucose, assist you in weight management, fight inflammation, heal your gut, heal your thyroid and fix those out of whack hormones. This is why the testing that I suggest in the beginning of the book is so important. I do understand not everyone has access to good doctors nor do they even have medical insurance.

Avoid any and all kinds of sugar. Especially the fake ones. High amounts of fructose and sucrose promote insulin resistance and will raise insulin levels. Along with avoiding all excess alcohol and all processed flours. We want to cut out all the bad insulin stimulating foods. Hormones affected: Insulin, Ghrelin

Start eating plenty of healthy fats: Omega-3 fats found in fatty fish, avocado, extra virgin olive oil can help lower fasting insulin levels. Hormones affected:  Insulin, Leptin, Estrogen, Cholecystokinin (CCK)

Exercise regularly: Women who exercised regularly for example taking a brisk walk, light weights, yoga and Pilates made improvements with their insulin sensitivity after 14 weeks in one study. Physical activity IS so important in more ways than one. Staying strong, flexible, and maintaining balance are all extremely important as we grow older and our bodies are changing. But one thing physical activity isn’t best for is dropping the pounds if your hormones are out of whack and your diet is bad please know this- You simply can’t outrun a bad diet and whacked out hormones.  You can’t overdo exercising either because excessive exercise can lead to hormonal imbalances. It can rise your cortisol levels. So take it easy on your body and the exercised that you do.  Hormones affected: Insulin, Leptin, Cortisol, Estrogen.

Drink organic decaffeinated green tea: Green tea may lower blood sugar and insulin levels. It is also loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body. These include improved brain function, fat loss, a lower risk of cancer. Most people have adrenal fatigue too with hypothyroidism along with your hormones being out of whack there for you want to eliminate caffeine entirely. Hormones affected: Insulin

Get enough sleep: Not getting enough sleep will help fat store around your midsection and shorten your life. Not getting enough sleep will affect your overall health and make you prone to other serious medical conditions, such as obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Sleep deprivation will also encourage you to eat more and make the worst food choices. A 2010 study indicated that those who slept six hours or less a night over a 25-year period were 12 percent to die prematurely than those who got seven to nine hours a night. The study, published in the scientific journal Sleep, was carried out by a team from the University of Warwick and the Federico II University medical school in Naples. Hormones affected: leptin  https://www.theguardian.com/society/2010/may/05/sleep-study-premature-death

Meditation, Pray or journal: Practicing meditation, praying or journaling can significantly reduce cortisol production. Cortisol is often known as the “stress hormone” because of its connection to the stress response. It also has assistance in controlling your blood sugar levels, regulating your metabolism, reducing inflammation, improving memory formation, helps to control salt and water balance, and also helps to regulate your blood pressure. When your cortisol is high it begins to store weight around your belly, your blood pressure starts to creep up, you may feel muscle weakness, fatigue, a weaker immune system and headaches. Hormones affected: Cortisol

Protein: Make sure you getting plenty of protein and you can do this with plant sources. Meat isn’t the only way to get adequate amounts of protein in your diet. Vegan plant based powdered supplemental smoothie mixes and many sources of vegetables have protein. Hormones affected: Insulin, Ghrelin, Neuropeptide Y (NPY), Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1), Cholecystokinin (CCK), Peptide YY (PYY)

Probiotics: It keeps your gut healthy and happy. Probiotics are live bacteria that supports your digestive system. It can help aid in weight loss, heart health and a healthy digestion system. Hormones affected: Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1)

Soluble fiber and fiber: Eating plenty of soluble prebiotic fiber to feed the friendly bacteria in the gut and fiber keeps you full longer. Hormones affected: Estrogen, Neuropeptide Y (NPY), Peptide YY (PYY), Cholecystokinin (CCK)

Eat anti-inflammatory foods: Most of us have chronic inflammation and don’t even know it by eating foods it helps to fight inflammation which keeps us fat and unhealthy. Research suggests that a gut imbalance, or leaky gut is the root cause of most autoimmune disease, so addressing this through diet is necessary to see progress and elimination of symptoms. By eliminating inflammatory foods and allowing the gut to heal and restore, the body gets back to its proper function and eventually foods can be reintroduced once the digestive system is healthy and able to process these foods properly. Hormones affected: leptin, Cortisol, Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1), Cholecystokinin (CCK), Peptide YY (PYY)

Eat an AIP protocol and Low GI Foods: The AIP protocol eliminates these common food intolerances that are known to trigger inflammation such as Nightshades, Eggs, Grains (gluten), Dairy, Legumes, Corn, Soy, Dairy and lectins. Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), can offer relief of symptoms and address the underlying problems that cause the autoimmune flare up and inflammation in the first. The AIP eliminates all the potential inflammatory foods such as: grains, legumes, dairy, nuts, seeds, and nightshades. Along with detoxing your life you need a sort of extreme dietary intervention to heal the body, and the thyroid. Eating foods that are low on the GI (Glycemic Index) will help keep blood sugar levels stable and help you avoid those sugar spikes in your blood. These foods are slowly digested and absorbed, causing a slower and smaller rise in blood sugar levels. This new way of eating is simply clean eating that will help keep blood sugar levels stable. You will eat healthy high fats, very clean (GI Scale) low carbohydrates and adequate amounts of proteins that contain no hormones and antibiotics in which it will soon begin to alter your body into burning glucose (sugar) for energy and fat as the main fuel sources. Don’t worry I will show you the foods along with several recipes to get you started on how to begin eating a AIP, Low GI protocol that also fights inflammation. Hormones affected: Insulin, Cortisol, estrogen, Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1), Cholecystokinin (CCK), Peptide YY (PYY)

Eating clean- Let’s talk about eating clean whole nutrient rich foods. This entire book is about eating clean, detoxing and changing your lifestyle. Clean eating focuses on consuming whole, minimally processed foods. Hormones affected: Cortisol, Estrogen, Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1), Cholecystokinin (CCK), Peptide YY (PYY)

Avoid Soy products- Soy not only disrupts hormones by mimicking estrogen in your body but it also causes inflammation, contributes to leaky gut syndrome and most likely has been genetically modified (GMO). Hormones affected: ALL 9

Drink equate amounts of clean water: You’ve heard it before water is life!  Make sure you are drinking clean filtered water and not adding to your toxic burden by ingesting easily absorbed toxins often present in water such as fluoride, chlorine, VOC’s, and more. You can safely consume up to half your body weight in ounces of water a day (160 lbs = 80 ounces of water). I love my Berkley Water Tank! Hormones affected: All

Avoid caffeine: Caffeine adds stress to your adrenal glands and the endocrine system. Caffeine will stimulate your adrenals causing them to adrenaline and cortisol in the exact same way as they do during a ‘fight or flight’ reaction. Caffeine gives you a false boost in energy before the fall to fatigue. Your thyroid is very sensitive to stimulants. It only confuses your already overworked system. If you must have coffee, try to limit it to one cup of coffee a day. As for caffeinated soda, this beverage is a loaded with empty calories, a crazy amount of sugar and then top if off with the caffeine. You can purchase soda water without sodium and squeeze a lemon or lime into it. Hormones affected: Cortisol

Avoid endocrine disrupting chemicals found in plastics, household cleaners, personal care products, and cosmetics. As I mentioned earlier these toxins mimic your body’s hormones, which can seriously influence their function. Don’t worry I will give you plenty of recipes throughout this book to help get you started on natural and healthy alternatives to help minimize your exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals.

From the Author: New Book: The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol: How to get out of survival mode Tip #4- Household Chemicals

Household Chemicals-

The diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease has failed nearly 59 million people. Our bodies are completely bombarded and overwhelmed with the constant exposure to toxic chemicals.

As for household cleaning products, items such as liquid castile soap, food grade hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice are safe alternatives and will get most jobs done. I also like to use essential oils. Now, all essentials oils are not created the same. I prefer to use essential oil brands that provide the purest quality of oils. I notice that many brands will brag about the quality and the purity of their oils but always remember that 100% pure authentic essential oils will have a positive effect on your body. Here are a few companies that I have used and they are not in any certain order. Doterra, Young living, Naturally Made Essentials, Plant Therapy Essential oils, Rocky Mountain Oils and Saje Wellness. You can’t go wrong with any of these brands.

They are certainly much safer than their endocrine disrupting commercial counterparts. I will give you several recipes for non-toxic cleaning alternatives and if you’re interested in learning more about this new way of life. You can find many more recipes in my book Awareness has Magic or on my blog’s webpage   Thehypothyroidismchick.com. The only reason why I am not putting all the recipes in this book is because frankly it would end up being a 1,000-page book.

If you can’t make your own products try to look for products that are made by companies that are Earth-friendly, animal-friendly, green, non-toxic and/or 100% organic. I apply this to everything from food, my personal care products, building materials, carpeting, paint, baby items, upholstery and anything that can have a direct impact on my life.

Did you know that it takes 26 seconds for the chemicals to enter into your bloodstream? The real reality is we are damaging our DNA and we are changing our genetic makeup for future generations. There was a study a few years back that said the umbilical cord of an average American baby has over 200 known chemicals in it. Eighty percent of the common chemicals that are used daily in this country, we know almost nothing about. Our children are being born toxic and we have no idea if these toxins are already doing some sort of damage their brains, their immune system, their reproductive system, and any other developing organs. Are we unknowingly setting ourselves up for failure in the womb, even before birth?

Scientists and researchers are concerned that many of these chemicals may be carcinogenic or wreak havoc with our hormones, our body’s regulating system.

Most products have a warning label that is typed in bold “Keep out of Reach of Children”.  As consumers, we believe that if our children don’t ingest these products they will not be harmed by them. This can be far from the truth. Think about other common methods of exposure are through the skin and our respiratory tract. WE are along with our children are often in contact with the chemical residues housecleaning products do leave behind, by crawling, lying and sitting on the freshly cleaned floor.

Scientists at Norway’s University of Bergen tracked 6,000 people, with an average age of 34 at the time of enrollment in the study, who used the cleaning products over a period of two decades, according to the research published in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

These chemicals can chemicals bind together.

Exposure to phthalates has been associated with lower IQ levels.

These chemicals can also be found in the shampoos, conditioners, body sprays, hair sprays, perfumes, make up, cleaning supplies, colognes, soap and nail polish that we use.

The results follow a study by French scientists in September 2017 that found nurses who used disinfectants to clean surfaces at least once a week had a 24 percent to 32 percent increased risk of developing lung disease.

Scientists and researchers are concerned that many of these chemicals may be carcinogenic or wreak havoc with our hormones, our body’s regulating system.

It’s not enough to be aware of all the outdoor chemicals that we are exposed to everyday but inside our homes we can have more power and control. We have to be more aware about using chemical cleaners, paints, glues, body lotions, toothpastes, underarm deodorants, hair products and pesticides. Instead start to begin to use products that don’t pollute our very own bodies. We must read labels, make our own products and do our own research. I can’t stress this enough. We must take a stand for our health. Stop using commercial products that are laced with unknown and harmful body damaging products.

You can reduce your exposure to them by eating organic foods, making your own cleaning chemicals and using alternative pest control methods.

While you begin to start reading labels and researching the ingredients in the products that you are interested in buying, think about this. If you can’t pronounce it or if you don’t have an idea what it is? Do you think our body knows what it is and how to eliminate the toxin, where to store or what to do with it? Our body is a great piece of brilliantly put together machinery but even machines have their “head scratching moments” and don’t understand the directions that are given.

    Vanilla grapefruit linen spray

3 drops pink grapefruit essential oil

    2 drops vanilla essential oil

1/4 cup vodka (any brand of vodka will do)

The vodka helps the water dry quickly after you spray it on your linens. Theses essential oils that are used create a beautifully fresh vanilla grapefruit scent that is perfect for a summer pick me up. This spray is very versatile. It can be used on clothing, fabric furniture, or even as a quick air freshener.

If the vodka smell is slightly strong just add another drop or two of essential oil.

Always shake the bottle be before spraying on your linen.

Scrub and then rinse with water and wet clean rag.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner with hydrogen peroxide

1/4 to 1/2 cup Hydrogen Peroxide

    1 cup Baking Soda

3 – 5 drops Essential Oils (Lemon, Lavender, Tea Tree, thieves or Clove are great choices to disinfect and freshen the air)

1/2 cup castile soap

Sprinkle all ingredients around the toilet bowl; hydrogen peroxide first, then baking soda, last the essential oil. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Scrub and then rinse well

Bathroom Mold disinfecting spray

You don’t have to grab bleach to get rid of mold in your bathroom. This 3 combo all natural mixture will do the trick.  I will spray the areas in my bathroom and leave it on for 10 minutes and wipe the moldy areas away. Vodka might be a little bit pricey but you won’t be breathing in toxic chemicals or having to worry about your skin absorbing a list of toxic chemicals.  Vinegar is naturally antimicrobial, tea tree is natural fungicide which can eliminate any mold or mildew problems and kills black mold spores! Don’t forget to label your spray bottle with a black permanent marker.

1 cup of white vinegar

1 cup of vodka

10 drops of tea tree oil

No need to dilute any of this mixture. Place all the ingredients in a spray bottle and label it bathroom mold killer. Mix well.  Spray onto hard surfaces where mold and mildew are growing and let this amazing combo do its cleaning. You’ll still have to scrub a bit, but with repeated use this all-natural cleaner will kill the fungus and help to prevent future growth. Shake each time before use.

Bathroom Cleaner

    3 tsp baking soda

1 TBSP of washing soda (optional)

     8 oz. very hot water

    1 TBSP Sal Suds

About 1 cup room temperature water

    ¼ tsp lemon essential oil

    ½ tsp orange essential oil

10 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil

    ¼ tsp clove essential oil

OR 1 tsp of a “thieves” essential oil instead of these other blends

    16 oz. glass spray bottle

Pour the baking soda, washing soda and hot water in the spray bottle, then the hot water. Close the lid on the bottle, and shake well until the powder dissolves. Remove the cap and then add the Sal Suds and essential oils. Fill the remainder of the bottle with water until the bottle is almost full, making sure to leave room for the sprayer lid. Give it another shake to combine the mixture and spray on the area you want to clean.  Always use a clean cloth or sponge when cleaning.

Non-abrasive soft scrubber

    1/4 cup baking soda

1 teaspoon liquid castile soap or Sal Suds

    1/2 teaspoon lemon essential oil

Mix the baking soda with just enough soap to form a creamy paste. Add the lemon oil and combine well. Put a small amount of this mixture onto a sponge, wash the surface, and then rinse well.

Easy Floor cleaner

1 cup of white vinegar

1 tablespoon of Sal Suds or dawn detergent as shown in the photo

1 cup of baking soda

2 gallons of very warm water

Mix in a bucket and always use a clean mop.

Wood Floor Cleaner and Polish

If you also want to give your floors a good polish, as well as a scrub, this might be the floor cleaner for you.

1-gallon hot water

3/4 cup of olive oil

1/2 cup lemon juice

All-purpose cleaner

2 tbsp. baking soda

4 tbsp. white vinegar

1.5 cups of water

Place all ingredients in bucket. I’m sure you know this but I always sweep away any dirt on your floors first. I always use clean mop. Make sure it you can’t damage your floors. All floors are not created equal. I would test a small area 1st. It hasn’t damaged any of my floors and I always have wood.  Don’t forget to label with a black permanent marker.

My goal is always the same with everyone or when I am simply writing an article for publication.  I want to provide helpful information about Medicare and protect you from unnecessary spending costs. Those already in Medicare or aging into Medicare should be treated with courtesy, dignity and respect at all times.

From the Author: New Book: The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol: How to get out of survival mode Tip #4- Toothpaste

Toothpaste

Most of us just focus on diet in an effort to achieve overall better health, along with proper supplements and working out. Oral health is connected with the rest of the body and it’s easy to forget where the first step of digestion occurs: Yes, in the mouth!

Why would you continue to use toothpastes that include sodium lauryl phosphate, triclosan, glycerin, fluoride, and other potentially harmful chemicals? Just look at the warning labels on a standard tube of toothpaste!

Did you know that your teeth are living and spongy. The foods we eat, the commercial toothpastes, medications and chemicals from drinks all can suck out the minerals from the teeth causing weakened enamel and leaving us more susceptible to decay and breakdown. I was on a new mission to keep my teeth healthy by using the absolute necessary and needed trace minerals to maintain the upmost dental health plus find a solution that wasn’t abrasive, while gently polishing them, and detoxifies while it refreshes. Is there such a thing? I did know that my long history with Mr. Store bought toothpaste was over. Did you know that a tooth powder could whiten your teeth, remove plaque, and not contain any harmful chemicals or questionable additives?

******Here we go again with fluoride but with more intriguing information. ********************************

Did you know that fluoride was Once Prescribed as an Anti-Thyroid Drug?   Up through the 1950s, doctors in Europe and South America prescribed fluoride to reduce thyroid function in patients with over-active thyroids (hyperthyroidism). (Merck Index 1968).   If you haven’t already, you should invest in a water filtration system to rid your tap water of fluoride. Do we really know how safe tap water is? Look at the recent events in Flint Michigan! Can you really trust the water companies? Although fluoride concentrations in tap water are relatively low and are considered “safe” for human consumption, it is not. Fluoride has long-term neurological and hormonal affects.  Fluoride is not an essential nutrient.  It is also that chemical that is commonly found in most toothpaste brands. There is clear evidence that, when ingested at high doses, fluoride causes neurotoxicity. Fluoride also is understood to interfere with the absorption of iodine, possibly leading to an iodine deficiency and ultimately hypothyroidism.  To benefit your health, use fluoride free tooth or make your own tooth paste. Get a good water filtration system and purchase a filter for your shower head. We use a Berkefeld brand.

Store bought toothpaste also have other ingredients in it like:

Glycerin is used in almost all toothpastes because it helps create a pasty texture and prevents it from drying out. Although it’s non-toxic it coats the teeth just enough to that prevents normal tooth remineralization. Remineralization is a whole-body process and in order for it to happen, the body must have adequate levels of certain nutrients, especially fat soluble vitamins and certain minerals. If you want to stop and reverse Tooth Decay you must add minerals in your diet, add plenty of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K), and your body must be able to absorb vital nutrients. You certainly can’t do this by having a coat on your teeth that will prevent absorption.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a foaming agent and detergent that is commonly used in toothpaste, shampoo, and other products such as degreaser for car engines.  SLS is an estrogen mimicker. It also increases gum inflammation and mouth ulcers. According to a study conducted the Department of Oral Surgery & Oral Medicine in Oslo, Norway, individuals who used a toothpaste containing SLS suffered from more ulcers (canker sores) than those who used an SLS-free toothpaste.

Sweeteners: Sorbitol, sodium saccharin and other artificial sweeteners are often used in toothpaste to improve taste, even though there is no evidence that these sweeteners are beneficial (or even safe) for use in the mouth. Xylitol has shown some positive benefits for oral health in some studies, but it remains a controversial ingredient in toothpaste.

Triclosan: A chemical used in antibacterial soaps and products. Triclosan was recently found to affect proper heart function in a study at University of California Davis and the FDA is currently re-evaluating it for safety in human use.

Let’s not forget to mention that many toothpastes also contain artificial colors/dyes or synthetic flavors. I must admit there are several good natural toothpastes out there and I have tried some of them not all but with my tight budget I will make them for pennies on the dollar. My favorite way to brush my teeth is by using tooth powder. Yes, you read this right. Tooth Powder.  Here is my recipe that I use. Feel free to adjust the ingredient’s based on your own needs. If you have sensitive teeth you might want to skip the baking soda and salt until you can get used to it.

Homemade Tooth Powder Recipe

Ingredients

4 tablespoons Bentonite Clay (make sure it is calcium not   Sodium Bentonite Clay)

    2 teaspoons baking soda

1 ½ teaspoons finely ground Himalayan sea salt

    ½ teaspoons clove powder

    1 teaspoon ground Ceylon cinnamon

5-10 drops of food grade peppermint essential oil

¾ teaspoons activated charcoal – optional

Directions

Using a stainless steel or plastic spoon, mix all ingredients in a clean glass jar. To use, add a little to a wet toothbrush and brush as normal.

Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is a gentle cleanser that is rich in minerals which support tooth remineralization. Its detoxifying properties help freshen breath and fight gum disease, while it’s adsorptive properties help remove stains from teeth. Make sure to get the food grade natural calcium brand like this one below. This is the brand that I use.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a mild abrasive tooth polish that helps mechanically remove stains while other ingredients such as clay and activated charcoal draw them out. It also helps freshen breath.

Himalayan Sea Salt

Himalayan sea salts such as this one contain 60+ trace minerals that aid in tooth remineralization. Salt is also highly antiseptic, which helps keep bacteria in check.

Herb & Spices

Spices and herbs such as clove powder, ground cinnamon, and ground mint add flavoring, but they also have astringent properties that support gum health.

Activated Charcoal

Activated carbon – is made by processing charcoal with oxygen and either calcium chloride or zinc chloride. It was used medicinally by both Hippocrates and the ancient Egyptians, and it is still the poison remedy of choice in modern day emergency rooms. Why? Because it’s highly adsorptive, which in plain English means it attracts substances to its surface like a magnet. Like absorptive substances which work like a sponge, adsorptive materials bind with certain compounds and prevent our bodies from using them.

If you’re not so hip on using powdered toothpaste, then here are some more all natural recipes.

Natural Tooth Paste Recipe

Natural Peppermint Toothpaste

1/2 cup coconut oil

3 Tablespoons of baking soda

15 drops of peppermint food grade essential oil

Melt to soften the coconut oil. Mix in other ingredients and stir well. Place your mixture into small glass jar. Allow it to cool completely. When ready to use just dip toothbrush in and scrape small amount onto bristles.

Homemade Coconut Oil Toothpaste Recipe

6 tbsp. coconut oil

6 tbsp. baking soda

15-20 drops of a food grade essential oil (spearmint is good)

Melt to soften the coconut oil. Mix in other ingredients and stir well. Place your mixture into small glass jar. Allow it to cool completely. When ready to use just dip toothbrush in and scrape small amount onto bristles.

Easy Homemade Mouthwash

    1/2 cup aloe Vera juice

    1/2 cup filtered water distilled

    1 1/2 tsp baking soda

2 drops food grade peppermint or cinnamon essential oil (optional)

In a mason jar with a sealable lid add all the all the ingredients. Close and tighten the lid and shake to combine the ingredients. The baking soda should dissolve after just a few shakes. I recommend storing this mouthwash in the fridge for long-term use due to the aloe juice which needs to be refrigerated.  It’s pretty easy to use pour a small amount of mouthwash into a cup. Swish around your mouth and spit it out. As with any mouthwash, don’t swallow. I wouldn’t recommend swallowing essential oils, unless you know they are food grade and you’re not allergic to it.

How to get out of survival mode Tip #4:

Avoiding Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors & Reducing Our Toxic Burden

Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors

Underarm Deodorant

Aluminum will mimic naturally occurring hormones in the body like estrogens (the female sex hormone) and is an endocrine disruptor. Aluminum will bind to a receptor within a cell and block the endogenous hormone from binding. This stops the normal signaling to occur and your body won’t respond properly which could lead to likely creating more than it needs.

Deodorant and antiperspirants impair the underarm lymph nodes. Aluminum-based compounds are the active ingredients in antiperspirants. Sweating is a necessity in life. There are roughly three million sweat glands pumping out as much as 14 liters/ 3 gallons of water a day. Sweat, as stinky and uncomfortable as it can be at times, is a natural and healthy part of life, helping to cool the body, release toxins and helps to maintain normal body temperatures. Sweat isn’t inherently stinky either. In fact, it’s nearly odorless. The stench comes from bacteria that break down from one of two types of sweat on your skin. Deodorant advertisers have done a pretty neat job of convincing us that we’re disgustingly smelly people who in fact need to be refined and save our stinky selves by their products. We’ve been wonderfully brainwashed into thinking sweating is a bad thing. Sweating from the heat, sweating from exercise, and sweating from stress are all different, chemically speaking. Stress sweat smells the worst. That’s because smelly sweat Is only produced by one of the two types of sweat glands called the Apocrine glands, which are usually in areas with lots of hair—like our Armpits, the groin area, and scalp. The odor is the result of the bacteria that break down the sweat once it’s released onto your skin.

Fun fact:

While women have more sweat glands than men, men’s sweat glands

Produce more sweat. Commercial deodorants are something you truly need to purge out of your life. Aluminum-based antiperspirants may increase the risk for breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease & Kidney Disease (Scientists noticed that dialysis patients who had these high aluminum levels were more likely to develop dementia too.)

A study published suggests that parabens from antiperspirants appear to increase your risk of breast cancer. This research, which was also reviewed in an editorial published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, looked at where breast tumors were appearing, and determined that higher concentrations of parabens were found in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually applied.

Journal of Applied Toxicology January 12, 2012: 32(3); 219-232

Journal of Applied Toxicology February 1, 2012: 32(5); 305-309

Deodorant Recipe

1/2 c. baking soda

1/2 c. arrowroot powder or ½ cup of cornstarch

5 tbsp. unrefined virgin coconut oil

10 drops of grapefruit essential oil or lavender essential oil

You can pick your favorite scent. I like lavender or grapefruit.

Empty deodorant stick or Mason jar

Directions

Mix baking soda and arrowroot together.

Melt your coconut oil in the microwave in a microwave safe bowl.

Mix all ingredients the baking soda and arrowroot powder with the oil, pour into clean small Mason jar, (or your empty stick container) add your essential oil to the Mason jar or the empty stick container, using a wooden Popsicle stick, give it a good stir to mix everything. Close you’re the lid.  Once you mix that essential oil in the bowl, it can only be used for the purpose of making your deodorant. Everything you’ve used is edible except the essential oils.

This will take roughly 24 hours to set. It will thicken up. I use my finger to scrape what I need out of the Mason jar and scoop it across my underarm. This will last you for a good 6 months!

How to get out of survival mode Tip #4:

Avoiding Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors & Reducing Our Toxic Burden

Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors

Personal Care Products

Reduce Your Toxic Burden

(It is a combination of everything.)

These are commonly found in items like antibacterial soap, deodorant, lotions, and makeup. These things are poisonous. Your skin is the largest organ in the body. Whatever you put on your skin goes into your body. I can’t preach this enough. If you can’t eat it, then don’t apply it to your skin. I understand this might not be 100% doable but every little bit helps your body. Every day we are exposed to a huge number of chemical toxins without our own doing. It’s in our water, the pollution in our air, the insecticides and herbicides that are is sprayed on our food and the chemicals that are spray on our lawns.

Environmental chemicals and toxins, pesticides, BPA, thyroid endocrine disruptors, iodine imbalance, other medications, fluoride, overuse of soy products, cigarette smoking, and gluten intolerance. All of these play a very important role in your thyroid health. A nonprofit group called Beyond Pesticides warns that some 60 percent of pesticides used today have been shown to affect the thyroid gland’s production of T3 and T4 hormones. Commercially available insecticides and fungicides have also been involved. Even dental x-rays have been linked to an increased risk of thyroid disorders.

You should always be checking with products that interact with your life. Bad ingredients are bad ingredients and this can come from a number of places. It can come from your food, water, body products, or your household products. No one can force you to become more aware of what you put on your body, what you put in your body and what your breathing into your body.

Chemicals found in consumer products Personal care products are loaded with parabens, petroleum, and phthalates. Did you know that products we use every day may contain toxic chemicals and has been linked to women’s health issues? They are hidden sneaky endocrine disruptors and are very tricky chemicals that play havoc on our bodies. “We are all routinely exposed to endocrine disruptors, and this has the potential to significantly harm the health of our youth,” said Renee Sharp, EWG’s director of research. “It’s important to do what we can to avoid them, but at the same time we can’t shop our way out of the problem. We need to have a real chemical policy reform.” The longer the length of ingredients on your food label means how much unhealthier it is for you to consume. When an item contains a host of ingredients that most likely you can’t even pronounce or remember to spell you can bet your lucky dollar that the natural nutrients are long gone. These highly processed frank n foods are very difficult for the body to break down and some of the chemicals will become stored in your body.

The Environmental Working Group has a great database to help you find personal care products that are free of phthalates and other potentially dangerous chemicals. I’ve written a book called:  Awareness has Magic, in this book, I teach you have to how to blend oils and natural scents where you can make body butters, lip balms, rose water, body butters, anti-aging facial creams, shampoo’s, detox baths, Vanilla grapefruit linen spray, Kombucha deodorant, toothpastes, non-toxic cleaning recipes and many, many other wonderful things. I am sharing many wonderful recipes with you from that book. The main reason why I began writing that book was to introduce people to a cleaner world and show everyone exactly how easy it was to create your own products that weren’t endocrine disruptors and also most importantly nontoxic.

Homemade Shaving Cream

    1 cup shea butter

    1 cup virgin coconut oil

    3 Tablespoons vitamin E oil

3 Tablespoons sweet almond oil or olive oil or jojoba oil

3 Tablespoons Dr. Bonners Liquid Castile Soap

30 drops of lavender essential oil (optional)

30 drops of lemon essential oil (optional)

Homemade Natural Shampoo

Ingredients:

2/3 cup of Castile soap

Two teaspoons of almond or olive oil

10- 15 drops of (lavender, lemon or grapefruit) essential oil (optional)

1/2 cup of full fat canned coconut milk

Method of preparation:

Its preparation is extremely easy. All you need to do is to mix all the ingredients in a bottle, and your natural, toxin- free shampoo is ready!

Use:

Remember to shake the bottle before you use the shampoo. Use it regularly and your hair will be incredibly healthy, shiny and gorgeous!

Rosemary Honey Conditioner

16 oz. of local, raw or Manuka honey

10 drops of rosemary essential oil

Mix the Rosemary essential oil & honey in a mason or bowl. I use about 1 tablespoon at of time of the honey mixture. I just place it in my hands and spread on my hair. Make sure your hair is completely wet and use warmer water because this is very sticky and you want to be able to lather is around all over your head.

Body butters are simply pure joy and nourishment for your skin!

The true art of creating body butters has to do with the ratio of butter to oil to wax. To create a chapped skin body butter that’s soft and easy to apply, a 6:1 ratio is ideal. Six parts of butters and oils, to one-part beeswax.

It’s very gentle for even the most sensitive skins, and most nurturing for the skin that needs A LITTLE BIT OF extra care.

I want to share a few hand cream recipes along with a few perfects of scents that will not only offer nourishment to hands and feet.

Hand Cream

1 oz. (28 g) unscented natural skin cream

4 drops Neroli/Petitgrain co-distill

5 drops Frankincense

1 drop Patchouli

1 drop Ylang Ylang

Make this blend in a 1 oz. (30 ml) jar. Put the natural skin cream into the jar, drop the essential oils in, and stir gently with a glass stirring rod or the handle of a stainless steel spoon. Use your hand cream as often as you like throughout the day.

You can use any natural, unscented cream that you like for this blend. I do suggest making a fresh jar every few weeks, because most natural skin cream is water-based, and is not made with a preservative.

When you have dry, cracked knuckles, it can feel like you’re constantly applying moisturizer but not experiencing much benefit from it.

Here is a recipe for a hand salve that can really help!

You can apply this hand salve as often as you need throughout the day. Some people even apply a thick layer on their hands and feet while they wear hand gloves along with footie while they sleep, so their dry, cracked skin can absorb as much of the healing components as possible.

This recipe makes 7 oz. (196 gm) of hand salve. You can make it in an 8 oz. (240 ml) glass jar or in two 4 oz. (120 ml) jars.

Dry, Cracked Hands and Feet Butter

1 oz. (28 gm) Beeswax

1 oz. (28 gm) Shea butter

1.5 oz. (42 gm) Kpangnan butter

1.5 oz. (45 ml) Neroli-infused jojoba

2 oz. (60 ml) Argan oil

Directions

Melt your beeswax in a Pyrex measuring cup over the stove. Put the Pyrex in a soup pot that’s a quarter full of water, so the boiling water will warm the Pyrex and melt the butters and oils gently. I like to let the handle of the Pyrex hang over the side of the pot. That way it doesn’t get too hot.

Add the jojoba wax. You can add this before the beeswax is entirely melted.

When the beeswax is melted, add your kpangnan butter. Remelt, stirring gently.

Add the argan oil.

Remove the blend from heat, then add the shea butter, stirring gently.

Once the shea butter is all melted, you can add your essential oils (if you’re going to add them). This blend is very healing even without essential oils, though.

Pour your melted blend carefully into your jar. Let it cool for a few hours (two or three hours should be long enough).

If you’d like to add essential oils, add them just before pouring your mixture into the jar.

Mosquito Repellent

    15 drops of lavender

    4 tbsp. of vanilla extract

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

Place all these ingredients in a 16oz then fill with water.

Slim and sassy detox bath

 1 cup of baking soda

2 cups of Epsom salt

10 drops of slim & sassy essential oil

Directions: add all the ingredients to a hot bath. Stir them around to dissolve. Soak for 20-40 minutes. Do this detox bath 2 times a week and watch those inches start to melt away? Along with a hypothyroidism diet of course and staying very well hydrated.

Nourishing Homemade Body Wash

1/2 cup full-fat unsweetened coconut milk canned

2/3 cup Dr. Bonner’s lavender Liquid Castile Soap

    3 tsp vitamin E oil

    5 drops lavender essential oil

2 tablespoons jojoba, apricot kernel oil, almond oil, or olive oil

Combine all ingredients in a bottle or Mason jar with a sealable lid. When you want to use it just shake the container and pour on a washcloth. This body wash doesn’t have any preservatives and it contains coconut milk therefore it has a short lifespan. I keep this in my fridge and use it within a week.

3 Ingredient Lotion Bar

1/3 Cup Coconut Oil

1/3 Cup Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter or Mango Butter

1/3 Cup Beeswax

This is pretty easy to make. You simply fill a sauce pan with a few inches of water. Place a glass jar (I use an old mason jar) in the center of the water. Bring water around the jar to a gentle boil. Next add all ingredients to jar and stir with a chopstick or Popsicle stick to combine. After they are combined well pour melted lotion into molds. Set aside and allow to cool.

How to get out of survival mode Tip #4:

Avoiding Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors & Reducing Our Toxic Burden

Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors

Medications

This is such an important yet touchy topic. Medications that you take can be thyroid suppressive. Many S.S.R.I. anti-depressant drugs have fluoride as their main ingredient. Fluoride is a very sneaky endocrine disruptor where the body mistakes it for something else and actually it will recognize it as iodine. Iodine is vital for every major function in the body. You see, our body is absorbing this fluoride believing it to be this fake iodine and placing it into all the human organs where it will have remain mostly stored. Fluoride is mimicking iodine. This big pretender manifests itself where it will build up over time on a cellular level in every major organ because very little of the fluoride that is absorbed and stored in our organs will be removed as a waste product in our urine or sweat. Continuous absorption of fluoride builds up in our tissues and eventually will lead to toxicity in the body. This can also cause lesions on the thyroid gland. Fluoride is also found in our tap water, bottled water, toothpastes, mouth rinses, pesticides and used as cleaning agents.

Did you know that only 10% of an individual’s serotonin is used by your brain, while about 80% of it is used by your digestive system?

Most of us know that serotonin is a chemical in the brain that can affect our mood. It is known as a neurotransmitter, although some consider it to be a hormone. This neurotransmitter aka hormone is 80% produced in the intestines and 10% in the brain. We can also find it floating around in our blood platelets as well in our central nervous system too.

Our gut plays a major role when it comes to our mood. If we eat foods that contain the essential amino acid known as tryptophan. This can help the body to produce more serotonin. Foods, including salmon, eggs, spinach, and seeds are among those that help boost serotonin naturally. Taking a supplement that has omega 3, 7 & 9 along with a good vitamin d has been known to help people with depression in healthy adults but the studies are still on going. ( https://www.vitalstudy.org/) and it has had promising results with postpartum depression, psychiatric conditions including schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and attention deficit disorder but the studies are still ongoing and not enough evidence to crack this case just yet. Up unto this time more research is needed but it certainly promising.

A leaking gut is a terrible thing and I will get into it later in this book but healing your gut can solve many problems people are faced with their failing health. Without your body being able to absorb the proper nutrients, your hypothyroidism will never begin to heal, because this nutrient serotonin is a major player and is needed to balance the hormones and to start to strengthen your thyroid.

Some medications that people take can be the root of many nutritional deficiencies. Some medications are the main reason why their thyroid became suppressed in the 1st place and they have been now diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Many different drugs can affect thyroid function. A small batch of medications including glucocorticoids, dopamine agonists, somatostatin analogs and rexinoids affect thyroid function through suppression of TSH in the thyrotrope (thyrotrophs) or hypothalamus.

Thyrotropes (also called thyrotrophs) are endocrine cells in the anterior pituitary which produce thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in response to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH). The hypothalamus is a small region of the brain. It’s located at the base of the brain, near the pituitary gland. While it’s very small, the hypothalamus plays a crucial role in many important functions, including: releasing hormones.

Drugs have chemicals and they can be tainted. They can have unintended side effects, intended side effects, and they can actually do more harm than the good.

The FDA is not some magical group of fairies that work with humans who are going to save you from harm. They certainly would love for you to think so…. but they aren’t. Just because something is FDA approved does NOT mean it’s safe.

You can never trust a drug company (or federal agency) to “have your back.” It just isn’t reality. You must take matters into your own hands.

Drugs known to affect thyroid function in patients with an intact hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis.

If you are taking a thyroid medication, if you haven’t noticed already, there is a list on the prescription package warning label telling you to avoid taking certain medications within 4 hours after your thyroid medications or not to take at all within a certain time frame of your thyroid mediations. Your pharmacist can explain and share this knowledge with you or you can simply read the packet that comes with your thyroid medication.

Example:

1.   1st of all for best absorption into your bloodstream, thyroid medication should be taken on an empty stomach 30-60 minutes before breakfast, or three or more hours after dinner. Especially if you must have coffee wait 1 hour after your medication intake because coffee, unless spaced apart by more than an hour, may reduce the absorption of your thyroid medication by about 30 percent.

 2.  A number of drugs have been shown to weaken the absorption of thyroid medications; these drugs include calcium carbonate, aluminum- containing antacids, sucralfate, iron supplements, cholestyramine, sevelamer, and, possibly, ciprofloxacin, raloxifene, orlistat, estrogen hormone replacement therapy, Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole, esomeprazole, or pantoprazole also interfere with the absorption of your thyroid meds, meaning these medications can actually make your thyroid medication weaker and you need a higher dose.

***As always please check with your health care provider***

Social media has really exploded with information and making things that are done in the dark come to light very easily accessible. It seems Big Pharma is the new mafia our century. Did you know that our prescription drugs are the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer in the United States and in Europe? I am sure the statics has changed since I’ve written the findings in this book. Close to half the people who has died were taken their medications correctly; the other half died because of errors, such as too high a dose, mixture of other medications or use of a drug despite them telling their doctors their concerns and it being brushed off as they have no idea what is good for their bodies. People often times feel forced to take the medication or made to feel inadequate if they doubt what their doctor has suggested. Our drug companies are not particularly reliable either, who do you think pay for these studies and in the news recently how some of these studies were paid extra to be swayed to make the medication look good knowing the risks for outweigh the benefit. These medications that have a long list of warnings, precautions, and caution for each drug. You can turn on your television and wait to listen to the commercials when these medications are being advertised on the television or the radio of some of the drugs and pay attention to what it says can possibly be a reaction or side effect for taking it. Weigh your options, do or don’t take the risk. I laugh at these commercials when I hear them. I talk to the T.V. and say, “oh yeah, I’m going take your medication because surely I want to risk, death, cancer or heart attack, blood clot, loss of limb, genital gangrene and even possibly a stroke.”

Do you really know what is made in the chemical mixture that you swallow every day? You can easily ask your doctor and if your doctor has no idea then do your own research. Call the company who makes it, research it on the internet and try to figure out what exactly you are putting into your body. Sometimes there are safer alternatives if you find that your medication has a slew of unhealthy ingredients. All you have to do is ask your health care provider what are your other options.

In no way shape or form am I evenly slightly suggesting, insisting or implying that you shouldn’t take your medications. Many people do need certain medications to keep them alive. I am not against or laying judgment either if you have to take medications.

The reason for this book that I have written is to enlighten you and help you become more aware. It’s completely up to you how you accept this information and how you go fourth with your life. I am sharing with you what I have learned. I was personally attacked for sharing this information about S.S.R.I. anti-depressant drugs in my Facebook group (which I have now closed because I simply needed a break after this incident). This person who I won’t name but you can clearly see their comment if you were to go look at my reviews on my 1st book. He went as far as to write a bad review on Amazon against one of my books. He never purchased a book-ever!  He was upset that I kicked him out of the Facebook group for him being rude, obnoxious and attacking people for their viewpoints. As soon as I accepted his request to become a member in our group he immediately started attacking and saying rude things to people in the group. As I look back on it, it makes me wonder if he just came into the group to be a disruptor. Some people are looking to upset others and they get a kick out of making other people’s life flustered. You know the old saying misery loves company. I also had to go as far as blocking him in all my social media accounts. Twitter, Instagram and fb because after he sent me several threatening private messages on Facebook with one in particular saying he was going to have fun with my little website. Shortly after that he figured out that all comments have to be approved by me on my website; Thehypothyroidismchick.com. The only way he could get back at me was to write a fake bad review on one of my books. His attack was completely unwarranted. Some people are just mean-evil souls that are trolling to upset others and that is how they get their rocks off. I accept honest feedback because it can make a person grow and learn. If he had actually purchased one of my books and had an issue with it then I would certainly be open to an adult conversation to learn why there was an issue and what I can do to improve it where I can better suit his needs but this clearly wasn’t the case as all.

You don’t have to agree with anything that I’ve written in this book. I do understand that everyone has opinions like we all have assholes and not all are pleasant, pretty or smell good. People can only understand from their perception and what has formed their thinking up until this point in their life. Along with the path they have walked up until this moment in their life. Most of us are on the same path but we are just at different parts on it. We are on different levels. Some are ahead and some are still trying to catch up. And then there are some who just prefer to keep their head in the sand. Which is perfectly fine as well? Our job as decent humans are to offer a helping hand to those who might have fallen off the path and who want to continue on the journey. We should lend out a helping hand, pull them back on the path, dust them off and offer encouragement for them to continue on their journey.

I hope for you, my friend, is that you will if you haven’t already to become your own health advocate, health investigator and health warrior! This is your journey to better health and finding the root cause of your hypothyroidism.

I know, there is so much information overload that most people are confused as to where to start. I believe you have already started by purchasing this book. You have decided that you weren’t going to stay sick and give this hypothyroidism disorder any more ownership of your health. I hope that you are starting to understand if you haven’t already that everything has a part to play in your body. I am on a path to help you, lead you and inform you through this terrible illness. Being diagnosed with hypothyroidism isn’t just here take this pill and it will fix your issues. Hypothyroidism has a root cause. Once you start addressing the root of your problems then your body can start healing itself. Your body is an awesome design but there is a complex balance between everything. It’s a domino effect. If you have something in your body that is overworked, it will cause a major shift in your body. Don’t worry the good news is that you can be healed.

How to get out of survival mode Tip #4:

Avoiding Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors & Reducing Our Toxic Burden

Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors

There are many things in your life moving forward that need to be changed where you can begin to heal. Cleaning up your endocrine disruptors is only one part of the puzzle.

#4 Let’s identify and address those sneaky thyroid disruptors

It’s a combination of everything.

Endocrine disruptors are tricky chemicals that play havoc on our bodies. They increase production of certain hormones; decrease productions of others; intimation hormones; turning one hormone into another; interfering with hormones signaling; tells cells to die prematurely; competing with essential nutrients; binding to essential hormones and accumulating in the organs that produce hormones.

Our bodies are completely bombarded and overwhelmed with the constant exposed to toxic chemicals through the air that we breathe, the water we drink, the foods we eat, the personal care products and cleaning products we use.

Every Cell in your body responds to all these different circumstances. All of these things have a direct impact on your hormones and in return your hormones have a direct impact on every major system in your body. Not to mention that our body is lacking certain nutrients that heavily influence the function of every cell in our body.

Your body is an awesome design but there is a complex balance between everything. It’s like a domino. One thing in your body that is overworked can cause a major shift in how things operate. Sometimes we have to do a little pruning of the branches, in order for the tree to be healthy again. Again, there isn’t a one size fits all nor any magical pill to swallow when it comes to healing your hypothyroidism.

As we have all found out when your thyroid isn’t working properly it can wreak havoc on your life.  Your thyroid is responsible for so many things from regulating your metabolism, making energy, adjusting your mood, helping you sleep, it even helps aid in good digestion but you see this is where you must come into play.

Like everything else in life you get back what you give.

For example, imagine a car. Its parts are specialized and they each perform specific tasks, but yet they all depend on each other. The human body is the same way.  When one thing is being over worked or needs repair it puts a strain on the rest where they can’t perform their specific tasks as designed.

As mentioned earlier in this book:

Did you know that it takes 26 seconds for the chemicals to enter into your bloodstream? Most commercial personal care products are full of endocrine disrupting chemicals that wreak havoc on our hormones.  On average women use 9 personal care and cosmetic products per day and this can add up to a mixture up its about 126 different hormone disrupting chemicals and add this to the toxins you’re exposed to each day when you got out into the world.   Over 1000 of these ingredients have already been banned in Europe but not here in the United States where our FDA has only banned 11 of those ingredients in our personal care products.

These chemicals in our body products, our food, our beverages, the vaccines and the pharmaceuticals create a breeding ground for sickness. Have you heard of gene mutation? It’s when the cells are changed by chemicals they are either damaged, lost or copied. These processed foods that are full of man-made chemicals, fluoridated municipal tap water, genetically modified foods, refined oils, herbicides like roundup, Artificial sweeteners, Vaccines and the yearly flu shot – often contain mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde and MSG. Pharmaceutical medications and a lot of the Pharmaceutical medications are loaded with fluoride, OTC (over-the-counter) medications for colds, allergies, headaches, anesthetics, anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants, antifungals, cholesterol-lowering medications, chemotherapy, appetite suppressants, arthritis medications, steroids – often contain heavy metal toxins, artificial sweeteners and toxic industrial-based food dyes. Let’s not forget to mention the over use of antibiotics, antacids, aspirin, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) which completely change the environment in our gut.

So may products in the environment are laced with chemicals that are known to be endocrine disrupting, which means that they can block or mimic the natural hormones.

Culprits, Causes, Exposure and Genetic Disposition

People being sick is big business.

Create a problem.

Sell the cure.

Another money making machine is born.

As consumers, we put our trust in the research and development of scientific studies, The FDA and The CDC. Drug store chains have quota’s to meet and even some of our Doctors get yearly bonus’s. Little do we do that behind closed doors corporations often pay scientists and these companies to support their product for profit. Some Politicians seem to have a revolving door between the private and public sector. The synthetic chemicals we face every day that is in our food, our water, and the air that we breathe. I’m sure this may be a hard pill to swallow that doctors, pharmaceuticals companies, research papers written by scientists and our very own FDA and CDC could be corrupt. Herbert Leonard Ley Jr. (September 7, 1923 – July 22, 2001) was an American physician, Harvard Professor and the 10th Commissioner and head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated,” What the FDA is doing and what we the public think they are doing is as different as night and day.” You can listen to a drug commercial and they mention a ton of side effects but still offer you the medication. This is being done right in front of our faces, openly and it seems we have accepted being treated like lab rats as the new normal.

Did you know that products we use every day may contain toxic chemicals and has been linked to women’s health issues?

There are hidden endocrine disruptors and very tricky chemicals that play havoc on our bodies. “We are all routinely exposed to endocrine disruptors, and this has the potential to significantly harm the health of our youth,” said Renee Sharp, EWG’s director of research. “It’s important to do what we can to avoid them, but at the same time we can’t shop our way out of the problem”.

We have pesticides, herbicides, GMOs in our food, fluoride and chlorine and trace pharmaceutical residue in our water supplies, methane, carbon monoxide and industrial air pollutants and the toxic chemicals that is in our everyday household products.

No wonder our bodies are completely bombarded and overwhelmed with the constant exposed to toxic chemicals through the air that we breathe, the water we drink, the foods we eat, the personal care products and cleaning products we use.

Did you know that it takes 26 seconds for the chemicals to enter into your bloodstream? Most commercial personal care products are full of endocrine disrupting chemicals that wreak havoc on our hormones. On average women use 9 personal care and cosmetic products per day. This mixture can add up to a combination of 126 different hormone disrupting chemicals. Next add this to the toxins you’re exposed to each day when you got out into the world. Over 1000 of these ingredients have already been banned in Europe but not here in the United States where our FDA has only banned 11 of those ingredients in our personal care products.

What if I told you that most diseases have an underlying ROOT cause? That YOU aren’t some random number picked by nature to have an Autoimmune Disorder, Hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, Cancer, high blood pressure or Alzheimer’s. There is a link between the changing human–nature relationship and its impact on people’s health. Think of your genes & nature as a computer program.

What is programmed; is what is created and filtered out.

If you are feeding your body and bombarding it with trash? Trash in equals trash out!

Based on the World Health Organization’s definition. “Combining these concepts, the human–nature relationship and its impact on human’s health are then explored through a developing conceptual model”.

What is being said is our body is heavily influenced by the world around us.

(It is a combination of everything.)

Our environment we live in, the foods we consume, our daily movement, our mental health (stress) and what was passed down from us from both parents.

Have you ever said something or looked into the mirror and felt as if you were turning into your mother or your father? Perhaps you noticed a certain expression in the mirror, a side snap of a photo or maybe you heard yourself saying something you swore you’d never say to your kids.

Don’t worry although we do inherit both genetic weaknesses from both of our parents and you do inherit your mother’s gut and lymphatic systems health that is only one part of the equation.

Your medical future isn’t all predetermined by your genes. “You may be born with a genetic predisposition to certain disorders, but that doesn’t mean you will absolutely develop them,” Hahn says. “It’s like a loaded gun. The genetic predisposition is the gun, and lifestyle factors can pull the trigger. Some of these things we can control, and some we can’t per Susan Hahn, MS, a genetic counselor and the assistant director of communications, compliance, and ethics at the University of Miami School of Medicine’s Hussman Institute for Human Genomics.

Although you inherited certain genes from both parents and your mothers gut health was passed down to you it doesn’t mean that is how your life has to be. You might have started life out with a 50% chance of developing what was passed down but NOTHING IS WRITTEN IN STONE.

Please read that again: NOTHING IS WRITTEN IN STONE

There is a sequence of small things in the generations passed down that happened, developed while you were in the womb, given during childbirth or over the course of your life.

(It is a combination of everything.)

Again, the environment we live in, the foods we consume, our daily movement, our mental health (stress) and what was passed down from us from both parents.

Perhaps you might not have ever thought to connect the dots to this approach about your health.

Would you believe me if I told you that you could possibly hold the key to the answer of your very own bad health?

Our health is a consequence of actions taken. It is a combination of sequences that has happened to your genetic make-up or just in your life to get you to this point. As our health goes, you would think that with all the technologies and advancements that we have today that it would be a cinch to diagnose and pretty straightforward to treat. Imagine the show the show Star trek: The Next Generation.  The doctor has a scanner that tells her exactly what is wrong with you & how to heal you. Each of us are unique individuals with different sensitivities. None of us has the same exact routine as far as what foods we eat, what chemicals we are exposed to, what stress levels we have and what medications we take but yet we all are similar when it comes to the routine protocols that we are given when we come down with an illness, disorder or disease.

(It is a combination of everything.)

** Again let me reintegrate the importance of this information**

Every Cell in your body responds to the foods you eat, the products you put on your body to the house hold chemicals that you purchase for your home. All of these things have a direct impact on your hormones and in return your hormones have a direct impact on every major system in your body. Not to mention that our body is lacking certain nutrients that heavily influence the function of every cell in our body.

We are creating a toxic shit storm within our very own bodies. The real reality is we are damaging our DNA and we are changing our genetic makeup for future generations. These chemicals in our body products, our food, our beverages, the vaccines and the pharmaceuticals create a breeding ground for sickness.

There was a study a few years back that said the umbilical cord of an average American baby has over 200 known chemicals in it. We know almost nothing about eighty percent of the common chemicals that are used daily in this country. Our children are being born toxic and we have no idea if these toxins are already doing some sort of damage their brains, their immune system, their reproductive system, and any other developing organs.

Are we unknowingly setting the future generations up for failure in the womb, even before birth?

As I’ve said previously; We do inherit our mother’s gut and lymphatic health system.

More scientists and researchers need to be concerned that many of these chemicals may be carcinogenic or wreak havoc with our hormones and our body’s regulating system.

Most products have a warning label that is typed in bold “Keep Out of Reach of Children”. As consumers, we believe that if our children don’t ingest these products they will not be harmed by them. This can be far from the truth. The truth isn’t being completed communicated nor the damage of the future being foreseen. Just take a moment and think about other common methods of exposure are through the skin and our respiratory tract. All of us including our children are often in contact with the chemical residues housecleaning products do leave behind, by crawling, lying and sitting on the freshly cleaned floor.

(Let’s talk about gene mutation again)

Have you heard of gene mutation? It’s when the cells are changed by chemicals they are either damaged, lost or copied. These processed foods that are full of man-made chemicals, fluoridated municipal tap water, genetically modified foods, refined oils, herbicides like roundup, Artificial sweeteners, Vaccines and the yearly flu shot – often contain mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde and MSG, Pharmaceutical medications and a lot of the Pharmaceutical medications are loaded with fluoride, OTC (over-the-counter) medications for colds, allergies, headaches and fever – often contain heavy metal toxins, artificial sweeteners and toxic industrial-based food dyes. Let’s not forget to mention the over use of antibiotics, antacids, aspirin, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) which completely change the environment in our gut.

It’s not enough to be aware of all the outdoor chemicals that we are exposed to everyday but inside our homes we have the power and the control. We have to be more aware about using chemical cleaners, paints, glues, body lotions, toothpastes, underarm deodorants, hair products and pesticides. Instead start to begin to use products that don’t pollute our very own bodies.

We must do our own research, make our own products or be a smarter shopper and start reading labels. I can’t stress this enough. We have to get back to the basics.  We must take a stand for our health.

The commercial products that are laced with hidden, unknown and harmful body damaging ingredients.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 60 percent of herbicides, 90 percent of fungicides, and 30 percent of insecticides to be carcinogenic, and most are damaging to your nervous system as well. In fact, these powerful and dangerous chemicals have been linked to numerous health problems such as:

Neurotoxicity and Parkinson’s disease

Disruption of your endocrine system

Carcinogenicity

Immune system suppression

Miscarriages, male infertility and reduced reproductive function

This information should make you rethink when you are considering whether to buy local, organic vegetables or not.

Our bodies have no way of adapting to these GMO and food like substances that we’ve been consuming. Every cell in your body is wrapped in a membrane of half fat and half protein. If you are constantly feeding these cells unnatural fatty acids, that membrane cannot function like it is designed to do and disease starts at the cellular level.

What if you were born with a disorder, disease or condition?

You see, disease just doesn’t happen. The average human is born healthy, but when a child has a condition that is present from birth, it is called a congenital disorder. Congenital disorders can be inherited from the genes, exposure to chemicals while in the womb (smoking, environmental toxins, medications, alcohol, etc.)  and a problem with the genes that has been passed down, or a combination of these things. These factors and their impact on a child’s health and development can vary from mild to severe.  A person can be born with a gene mutation passed down from their parents or from generations passed that the genes may be lurking, waiting to awaken in the right environment. Genes can be either dominant or recessive.  Researchers have identified more than 4,000 diseases that are caused by mutations. But having a genetic mutation that may cause a disease or condition doesn’t always mean that a person will actually develop that disease or condition. They can be carriers of this disease or condition and pass it down to the next generation. This is very unfortunate but it does happen.

I was born with a club foot, birthmarks, freckles, blonde hair, blue/green eyes and my hair didn’t start growing until after I was two years of age. This was what the genetic gene pool from my parent’s that swirled like a cup of soup and decided to design me. My mother smoked, had high blood pressure, was in contact with chemicals and on certain prescribed medications for emotional issues. My father well, I never knew him just of him but that’s a different story in another book yet to be written. I do know she met him while living in Fayetteville, NC as she was still married to my older half-brother’s father although they were separated. This certainly sounds like a Maury Povick episode but no one has time to be embarrassed on national TV by my parent’s promiscuous ways. Only personally to all that is reading these words.

Think of your genes as a blueprint for your body.

If there’s a change to these instructions, it can sometimes increase your odds for developing diseases.

Therefore, we must be more aware of the foods we eat and the drinks we drink, the medications we take, the chemicals we allow ourselves to interact with which also includes our body, our home (house cleaners, weed killer, etc.) and environmental agents plus our overall mental wellbeing.

It is a combination of everything.

From the Author: New Book: The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol:  Natural vs. Synthetic Vitamins – What’s the Big Difference?

Natural vs. Synthetic Vitamins – What’s the Big Difference?

Our food is getting less and less nutritious. Fields that grow our foods are depleted by overuse. Pesticides limit the action of beneficial microbes in the soil that help plants draw in nutrients. Fertilizers focus on certain key chemicals and don’t take into account all the trace minerals, organic components, or beneficial microbes that go into good nutrition. Genetically modified foods have made their way into our food supply when we don’t know how they may affect us in the long term.

Our food is refined and processed where it will have a longer shelf life because its less expensive to make, more convenient, tastes better, and is even made to be more addictive. Companies have stripped out and destroyed vital nutrients as they are processed.  Much of the food we find in grocery stores outside the produce section barely resembles what humanity has been eating for thousands of years. There’s no wonder we have so many auto-immune disorders, food allergies, and the growing epidemics of obesity. Our bodies don’t know what we’re ingesting, they aren’t finding the nutrients they need, and they’re begging for us to eat more and more so we might manage to give ourselves what we’re missing.

We all know we need a steady supply of nutrients from our food sources where our bodies can function properly. Scientists and food companies create cheap vitamins in labs. The problem is these synthetic vitamins are not what our bodies are looking for either.

Almost all multivitamins are from synthetics. The same goes for fortified foods. There’s a good reason for this. Synthetic vitamins are cheaper to make and usually more stable. This means they can last on shelves for months or years, be added to foods in high doses, and create small dense tablets packed with insane amounts of every type of vitamin. These vitamins are allowed to call themselves “natural” even when they are actually synthetic because scientists say the synthetics are virtually identical to the ones found in food. Which is far from the truth.

We know that vitamins and minerals are essential for life, and vitamin deficiencies can definitely hurt you. Always read your labels and stay clear of supplements that contain artificial colorings, sodium benzoate, propylene glycol, aluminum silicate and High fructose corn syrup.

4.-Food Sensitivity Test:

 This is a must.

Undiagnosed food sensitivities are very common and sometimes difficult to diagnose.

If you have a food sensitivity and are unaware that you do eating these certain foods will cause inflammation within your body, become a burden on the IMMUNE SYSTEM and is difficult for your digestive tract to break them down.

Inflammation can stall your healing efforts especially when your immune system is having to concentrate on responding to these food invaders by creating specific disease-fighting antibodies (called immunoglobulin E or IgE).

MRT blood work can tell you what foods if any that your body may be fighting as though they were poison and causing major inflammation. MRT means Mediator Release Test. It’s for food sensitivity, the single common component of diet-induced inflammatory reactions is proinflammatory and proalgesic mediator release from white cells.

It turns out that there were MANY foods that tested bad for me.

We are all biochemically wired different and we won’t all have the same inflammation triggers. Most people are unaware that certain foods are actually working against their bodies. You see, if you are allergic to certain foods it will involve your immune system. The immune system controls how your body defends itself. Your body sees inflammatory foods as invaders and will kick in your autoimmunity responses when you ingest that certain food.

There is so much confusion to which is the best diet for hypothyroidism but the REAL truth is the foods we eat have a major impact on our lives. It affects your gut health along with decreasing or increasing inflammation within your body. There are foods that will do more harm than good to your thyroid even if you DON’T have a food intolerance to them and I will discuss it later in this book. We must begin to eat to cater to healing our thyroid, healing our bodies and avoid those foods that hinder both.

Food allergies verses food sensitivities are two very different things.

A food allergy triggers an extreme and potentially life-threatening reaction, known as an IgE-mediated immune response, whenever you are exposed to a certain type of food or foods.

Most allergic reactions happen within minutes and can range from mild—think hives or stomach cramping—to severe, such as anaphylaxis, which can impair your breathing, cause a dramatic drop in blood pressure, and affect your heart rate.  Due to the severity of food allergies, most people already know but there is that small percentage who don’t.

A food sensitivity triggers a digestive system response rather than an immune system. Food irritates a person’s digestive system or when a person is unable to properly digest, or break down, the food.

It can take up to 72 hours for any symptoms of a food sensitivity to present. The issue with a food sensitivity is by the time the delayed response happens you have probably already ate a wide range of foods in the time it takes for symptoms to appear and this makes it more difficult to pin point a pattern between the specific foods you eat.

This is also why I suggest that you should keep a food journal.

5.-Lipid panel. This test looks at the lipids, or fats, in your blood.

People with hypothyroidism may have elevated cholesterol levels. The research has associated higher levels with heart disease but when we are “artificially” lowering the levels with statin drugs we aren’t fixing the root of the issue. Please do your research. Statin drugs do more harm than good and they do have an anti-inflammatory side effect that is why people do see very slight drop in heart attack rates (about 1%). Just think if a person were to start eating right and concentrate on lowering their inflammation what could happen naturally?

Prescription medications and medical errors are in the top 3 leading cause of death in the US.

6.-Total cholesterols, which includes your good HDL cholesterol, should be below 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) and LDL cholesterol below 130 mg/dL. If your cholesterol is high when you start thyroid treatment, your doctor might test again after thyroid hormone levels stabilize.

“A lot of patients with high cholesterol can have their cholesterol reduced just by treating their thyroid,” says David Borenstein, MD, an integrative medicine physician in private practice at Manhattan Integrative Medicine in New York City.

7.-A full heavy metal test panel.

Your doctor CAN test your blood, urine, and hair to measure metals toxicity.

If you have heavy metals in your body that can block iodine uptake and halt the conversion from T4-T3. Heavy metals build up in your body over time because your body doesn’t know how to get rid of it. A heavy metal build can lead to your body slowly breaking down and allowing certain sicknesses to start to develop.  If you find out that you have a heavy metal buildup in your body you can start including foods that naturally help to detoxify your body from a heavy metal buildup. For example, you can begin with adding some cilantro to a smoothie, drink some lemon water and decaffeinated green tea. There are several other natural remedies that are easily accessible to start adding to your daily routine if you find this to be true for you. I have written a blog that you can find @ Thehypothyroidismchick.com website that goes into detail about How to detox from a heavy metal buildup.

8.- Check for celiac disease with a celiac panel.

Celiac disease is a lifelong serious medical condition that has no none cure. Eating gluten will trigger an immune response in the body, causing the immune system to attack the small intestine in response when gluten is consumed. It also causes inflammation and damage to the small intestine.

If left untreated, celiac disease can result in many adverse side effects, including digestive issues, nutritional deficiencies, weight loss and tiredness.

The names of certain doctors have been changed because frankly, I don’t want to be sued for proven their lack in their field.

Hippocrates was right when he said: Let they food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.
