16 Natural Ways to Get Rid of Mosquitoes Outdoors

Did you know that a mosquitoes egg can become an adult in less than one week after birth? They also tend to be picky about their victims. Apparently, not everyone is equally as yummy. It seems that mosquitoes find people with type O blood twice as tasty as  people with Type A blood.  I’ve always been a huge fan of chemical-free remedies and those conventional mosquito repellants on the market often irritate the skin are also full of chemicals that are very unhealthy to breath in and are soaked in by your skin within  20 seconds! Those chemically filled “bug sprays” are temporary at best even if they work at all. Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale out of our mouths. So what is a human to do about those pesky outdoor blood sucking,  disease spreading bugs?

The 1st most important thing is Don’t give mosquitoes a nearby place to breed.  Most mosquitoes can’t fly no more than one to three miles, and some mosquitoes such as the Asian tiger mosquito only have a flight range of just 100 yards or so. So these pesky little pests are always looking for a place to land or a place to lay eggs, and water is a very attractive option.

Fun Fact: Females only need to encounter a male mosquito once to mate and can produce eggs up to five times in a summer from that single encounter.

1.“Eliminate stagnate water around the property”

Places to inspect for stagnant water:
Gutters (clogged or uneven that does not quickly eliminate the water)
Corrugated down spout extensions
Planters and pots
Kids toys
Areas around property that puddle after a rain
Open trash cans or buckets
Bird baths
Anything that will hold water after a rain

2.Lemon Joy Dish Detergent
Simply add a few drops onto paper plates in the areas you will be sitting. Mosquitoes become more interested in the lemon freshness, than they are in your BBQ guests.

3.The Mosquito Plants
The Lemon-scented Geranium is also commonly known as the “Mosquito Plant”. This particular member of the Germanium family is known to repel mosquitoes and replace them with a hint of lemon. Have a plant party basil, Lavender, Lemongrass,  Lemon thyme, Mint , Rosemary, marigolds, citronella &  Lemon balm all of these repel mosquito’s too.  These plants contain oil that can be extracted for their pest-repelling effect.

4.Garden Feeder Solution
If you have an old garden feeder lying around along with a few household liquids, you can drive mosquitoes out using this technique.
1/3 stale beer (any kind),
1/3 Epsom salt
1/3 mouth wash (with alcohol)
Put the mixture in your garden feeder and spray down your lawn, bushes, patios and areas that look suspicious for breeding insects. Do this at the beginning of the year and in the middle. This solution could smell a little funny at first, but quickly dissipates, leaving your out door areas mosquito free!

5. Burn  Mosquito Incense

Mosquitoes are not big fans of smoke and hate aromatic smoke even more therefore burn some  citronella, eucalyptus, and even cloves. Look for incense products that are 100% natural such as these from Amazon.

6.Red Cedar Mulch
You can ward off Mosquitoes as well as improve the look of your yard with red cedar mulch or chips. Use the chips as you normally would in the yard and garden areas. Then, make a brew out of the chips by boiling them in water like a tea. Put the liquid in a garden sprayer and spray areas and walk ways wear you can’t place the cedar chips themselves.

7.Attract Natural Predators
It never hurts to welcome birds and other natural predators that’ll feed on the mosquito population. The Purple Martin is one species of bird that’s known as a natural mosquito predator. You can set up birdbaths and feeders to attract these birds species to your backyard. Place Bat Houses around your yard too.  Bats love mosquitoes and the more bats you can attract to your yard, the fewer mosquitoes you will have.

8.Used Coffee Grounds
This method of mosquito repellent attacks the insects at the source. Take used coffee grounds and sprinkle them in standing water where mosquitoes are the most likely to breed. The coffee grounds forces the eggs to the surface and deprive them of oxygen. This in turn will kill the mosquitoes before they ever hatch. This method is also completely safe for the environment.

9.Burn Pinion Wood
You can use a chiminea or other outdoor patio fireplace to burn pinion wood. This pungent species of wood has been known to keep mosquito’s at bay.

10.Fans & Air Circulation
Mosquitoes don’t really like breezes as it can throw off their infrared senses and make it difficult to fly. Sometimes getting rid of a problem is as simple as a cool breeze in Summer.  You can set out a cheap box fan, like the ones we used to put in windows back in the day, also place one on the  corner of the patio, which will makes a slow breeze. Next place a small oscillating fan nearby where its regular back-and-forth movement breaks up the steady stream of air from the box fan. The combination is guaranteed to foil the most persistent biters, as well as provide a nice cool breeze.

11.Get a Portable ThermaCELL
If you need something to protect you from mosquitoes while you are camping or away from home then get a ThermaCELL device. You just need to pop in a fuel cartridge to start repelling mosquitoes.

12.Get a Bug Zapping Device
Use a zapping device, such as the Hoont Mosquito Trap Killer, to attract and kill mosquitoes. Place the stand in an isolated area of the room or backyard where there isn’t much light.

13.Create a Sugar Mixture Trap
Cut the upper portion of a two-liter plastic bottle then fit the inverted top into the lower portion of the bottle. Seal these two pieces together with tape. Next, mix a cup of sugar with a cup of hot water. Make sure the sugar dissolves. Once the sugar solution has cooled down, add two additional cups of water and one tablespoon of dry yeast. Pour the final mixture into the bottle and place it outside so the trap can work its magic.

Extract of garlic has mosquito larvicidal properties . Crush a few cloves of garlic and boil the crushed garlic in water.
Then pour this homemade mosquito repellent in a spray bottle and squirt it around the room. This remedy will kill the mosquitoes.
