How To Start Healing Your Hypothyroidism Tongue

myth-eating-ice-cream-will-make-your-cold-worse

Have you every heard the saying; ” Man, it’s on the tip of my tongue,” “ I’m going to just bite my tongue on this subject” , “She has a forked tongue” or  “ Cat’s got your tongue?”  – this miraculous   muscle   that is covered with  mucous membranes  and has an average of about 9,000 taste buds. The tongue does much more than allow you to speak, suck or swallow. Your tongue is unique to everybody. It is like a fingerprint. It shows us all about the subtleties of our health. This organ is also responsible for being your bodies first sign of defense in showing that you might have a unhealthy body. This is the only part of our body that is directly connected to the stomach and allows us to see how our digestive tract is working.   Have you ever took the time to stick your tongue out in a mirror and look at it? A healthy  tongue should be slightly pink in color, moist, and fairly smooth.

tonguehealth

The Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism reported that thyroid disorders can have a large noticeable impact on the tongue. Among the effects of not having enough thyroid hormone is a large protruding tongue (macroglossia). This swelling can push the edges of the tongue against the teeth causing a wavy pattern. This can be a indication that you are dehydrated, anxiety, hormonal issues or nutritional problem. If the symptoms last longer than a few weeks it is  important enough that you should discuss it with your doctor.

If the tongue is fissured/ cracked. This indicates that there are some underlying food allergy.  These food allergies  often develop after many years of damage to the gut. After years of abuse you will develop a “leaky gut”.  If your  tongue appears to look like this 9 times out of 10 you have a food allergy.

A red beefy tongue can be a sign that you have vitamin deficiencies, particularly deficiencies in vitamin B12, folic acid, or iron.  If the red tongue persists, then you should ensure your vitamin intake meets your body’s needs. A simple blood work @ your doctors office will be able to let  you know.

Hypothyroidism is a very common cause of tongue scalloping. This butterflyshaped gland that sits low on the front of the neck. Your thyroid lies below your Adam’s apple, along the front of the windpipe.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) associates spleen disorders with a scalloped tongue. Your spleen helps to filter blood and is connected with your immune system. It can become enlarged because of infections and damaged through injury.

According to the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies, a swollen or scalloped tongue is one of the symptoms of a spleen QI deficiency. Other symptoms are digestive issues, easy bleeding, achy muscles, and tiredness.

A scalloped tongue could be a sign that you suffer from sleep apnea.

A scallpped tongue could be the sign of a  mineral or vitamin deficiency. For example,  vitamin B12 deficiency .

Tongue scalloping could be a sign that your over stressed with anxiety.

Certain medications can also cause you to have a scalloped tongue.

Spots

tongue Spots on the tongue may just mean that you need to work harder on  your oral health.

If there is a mixture of red and white spots which sometimes looks like continents of a world map, then you have what is called geographic tongue. This condition is harmless.

If your tongue has spots that look similar to cottage cheese then you may have oral thrush and this may be an indication of a weakened immune system.  Cleaning daily and drinking water. When you 1st notice them , try cleaning your mouth. Gently brush your teeth and tongue and use a tongue scraper to clear off any debris.

  White Patches

tongue-6

A white coating on your tongue may just mean you have a yeast overgrowth. Don’t panic , just yet. Maybe a simple  brushing your tongue correctly for a few weeks to see if that helps with the white patches.

Candida overgrowths starts when you’ve been sick and have used antibiotics, or when your immune system is not working properly. Balancing your gastrointestinal environment with healthy levels of probiotics from fermented foods,  good quality natural yogurt, or a probiotic supplement can be a great way to restore gastrointestinal balance in the digestive tract. Fermented foods are the powerhouses to help boost the good gut bacteria and improve digestive, cardiovascular and your immune health. Our gut is the biggest part of our immune system and fermented foods will help you to heal and restore gut imbalances.

I have actually opened and rubbed a full capsule of probiotic powder each day  on my tongue to help get rid of the yeast overgrowth and this has worked! Along with coconut oil pulling. I’ve also brushed my teeth with baking soda, used a cooper tongue scrapper gently across my tongue and rinsed my mouth with organic apple cider vinegar.  Now, if  you mouth is sensitive this might not work for you but it worked for me.

Never Ignore Your Body

The above symptoms are only some of the indications you may see by examining your tongue. The most important tool for supporting health is your body. Learn to pay attention to your body and listen when it talks to you. If your tongue hurts, theses issues  have lasted for longer than two weeks or you have notices other changes in your mouth or tongue in addition then it might be  vital that you see a doctor. Things going on with  your tongue could be a sign that you are suffering from another illness that will require treatment to cure. Your doctor will also give you advice regarding diet and lifestyle changes that you can take on to help prevent tongue issues.

You should contact your doctor about a swollen tongue in the following circumstances:

  • The swelling of the tongue is so severe that it blocks your airways.
  • You have a scalloped tongue for more than 10 days.
  • Normal activities like breathing, eating, speaking, and chewing cause problems.
  • The tongue swelling is very bad.

Extra Things I do To help My Mouth Stay Healthy

It’s not enough to be aware of all the outdoor chemicals that we are exposed to everyday but inside our homes we can have more power and control. We have to be more aware about using chemical cleaners, paints, glues, body lotions, toothpastes, underarm deodorants, hair products and pesticides. Instead start to begin to use products that don’t pollute our very own bodies. We must read labels, make our own products and do our own research. I can’t stress this enough. We must take a stand for our health. Stop using commercial products that are laced with unknown and harmful body damaging products. Your Thyroid hormones affect every organ in your body, every tissue and every single cell. You must start re-balancing the immune system by addressing the root cause of what ever ails you.

Interesting fact about toothpaste,  Over the span of the average Americans life they use about 20 gallons of toothpaste, and although you might not swallow it, the chemicals in the toothpaste can still make its way into your bloodstream.  Your mouth has an absorption efficiency rate of more than 90 percent. Looking at the big picture, its certainly with the extra effort to brush your teeth with toothpaste that doesn’t contain any questionable ingredients and most popular brands have these list of ingredients below.
Per Dr. Mercola; A recent report by The Cornucopia Institute, an organic industry watchdog, highlights many of the problems in the regulation of cosmetic ingredients. Contrary to popular belief, the industry is allowed to largely regulate itself, which has allowed many hazardous ingredients to be introduced.

Are you using a toxic toothpaste?
These ingredients are just some of the things you MUST avoid:
1. Fluoride
2. Triclosan
3. Sodium lauryl sulfate
4. Parabens
5. Carrageenan
6. Propylene glycol
7. Diethanolamine
8. Microbeads

Making your own toothpaste has never been easier.

Natural Tooth Paste Recipe

Natural Peppermint Toothpaste

1/2 cup coconut oil

3 Tablespoons of baking soda

15 drops of peppermint food grade essential oil

Melt to soften the coconut oil. Mix in other ingredients and stir well. Place your mixture into small glass jar. Allow it to cool completely. When ready to use just dip toothbrush in and scrape small amount onto bristles.

Homemade Coconut Oil Toothpaste Recipe

6 tbsp. coconut oil

6 tbsp. baking soda

15-20 drops of a food grade essential oil (peppermint, cinnamon, grapefruit or lemon taste great)

Melt to soften the coconut oil. Mix in other ingredients and stir well. Place your mixture into small glass jar. Allow it to cool completely. When ready to use just dip toothbrush in and scrape small amount onto bristles.

Did you know that your teeth are living and spongy. The foods we eat, the commercial toothpastes, medications and chemicals from drinks all can suck out the minerals from the teeth causing weakened enamel  and leaving us more susceptible to decay and breakdown. I was on a new mission to keep my teeth healthy by using the absolute necessary  and needed trace minerals to maintain the upmost dental health plus find a solution that wasn’t abrasive,  while gently polishing them , and detoxifies while it refreshes. Is there such a thing? I did know that my long history with Mr. Store bought toothpaste were over. Bentonite clay does its work drawing toxins out of the mouth, it leaves behind minerals that are nourishing for the teeth. Try my  homemade toothpaste.

Homemade Tooth Powder Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons Bentonite clay
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 ½ teaspoons finely ground unrefined sea salt
  • ½ teaspoons clove powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground Ceylon cinnamon
  • 5-10 drops of  peppermint essential oil
  • ¾ teaspoons activated charcoal

Directions

Using a stainless steel or plastic spoon, mix all ingredients in a clean glass jar. To use, add a little to a wet toothbrush and brush as normal.

If you aren’t into the whole making your own toothpaste then try these brands out!

Coconut Oil Pulling and Mouthwash: Excellent for Teeth Whitening, Dry Mouth, & Oral Detox - Helps Resolve Bad Breath and Removes Tea & Coffee Stains on Teeth - Risk Free Money Back Guarantee

Most of us cannot even imagine what life would be like without brushing and flossing our teeth everyday. However, in the scheme of things, tooth brushing is relatively, new since nylon bristle toothbrushes didn’t become part of our normal American experience until the late 1930s!

WHAT IS OIL PULLING?

An ancient Ayurvedic ritual dating back over 3,000 years, oil pulling involves placing a tablespoon of extra virgin organic cold pressed oil (I use coconut oil ) into your mouth and then swishing it around for up to 20 minutes, minimum 5 minutes (pulling it between your teeth), before spitting it out. Whatever you do, do not swallow the oil as you will ingest the toxins you are trying to wipe out. Afterwards requires brushing your teeth with an all-natural fluoride-free toothpaste, and rinsing your mouth out. And you’re done! It really is that easy.

WHY OIL PULLING?

Oil pulling can really transform your health. Your mouth is the home to millions of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other toxins, the oil acts like a cleanser, pulling out the nasties before they get a chance to spread throughout the body.
This frees up the immune system, reduces stress, curtails internal inflammation and aids well-being.

This frees up the immune system, reduces stress, curtails internal inflammation and aids well-being.

Coconut Oil Pulling Benefits.

Why Coconut Oil is the Best Oil to Use:

Because coconut oil has been shown to:

  • Balance Hormones
  • Kill Candida
  • Improve Digestion
  • Moisturize Skin
  • Reduce Cellulite
  • Decrease Wrinkles and Age Spots
  • Balance Blood Sugar and Improve Energy
  • Improve Alzheimer’s
  • Increase HDL and Lower LDL Cholesterol
  • Burn Fat

Avoid Fluoride Blocks Iodine Receptors

Did you know that fluoride was Once Prescribed as an Anti-Thyroid Drug?   Up through the 1950s, doctors in Europe and South America prescribed fluoride to reduce thyroid function in patients with over-active thyroids (hyperthyroidism). (Merck Index 1968).   If you haven’t already, you should invest in a water filtration system to rid your tap water of fluoride. Do we really know how safe tap water is? Look at the recent events in Flint Michigan! Can you really trust the water companies? Although fluoride concentrations in tap water are relatively low and are considered “safe” for human consumption, it is not. Fluoride has long-term neurological and hormonal affects.  Fluoride is not an essential nutrient.  It is also that chemical that is commonly found in most toothpaste brands.  There is clear evidence that, when ingested at high doses, fluoride causes neurotoxicity. Fluoride also is understood to interfere with the absorption of iodine, possibly leading to an iodine deficiency and ultimately hypothyroidism.  To benefit your health, use fluoride free tooth or make your own tooth paste. Get a good water filtration system and purchase a filter for your shower head. We use a British Berkefeld.

A few good books to grab and read!

The Fluoride Deception   ( click on link to order)

This is a powerful read. The Fluoride Deception documents a powerful connection between big corporations, the U.S. military, and the historic reassurances of fluoride safety provided by the nation’s public health establishment. The Fluoride Deception reads like a thriller, but one supported by two hundred pages of source notes, years of investigative reporting, scores of scientist interviews, and archival research in places such as the newly opened files of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Energy Commission. The book is nothing less than an exhumation of one of the great secret narratives of the industrial era: how a grim workplace poison and the most damaging environmental pollutant of the cold war was added to our drinking water and toothpaste.

Look into getting a  Knowledgeable Health Practitioner:

The main reason why you should work with a knowledgeable health practitioner is its  patient-centered medical healing at its best. Unfortunately  when it comes to hypothyroidism there isn’t a one size fits all approach to dealing with it and often times you are left still searching for the answers to your symptoms when all you want is your zest for life back. A knowledgeable health practitioner will care for you as a individual as they won’t look at your body as a whole they will treat each individual body symptom, imbalance and dysfunction. They certainly move from the confusion of the “one size fits all treatment” approach that we know isn’t working to the one that will cater to what you body needs.  Let’s not forget that each of us are a unique case and unless you get a proper thorough clinical evaluation, trying to figure what medical advise you need online is dubious at best.
