Cleaning Products Have a Damaging Impact on Women’s Health

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests that:

Cleaning products are necessary for maintaining attractive and healthful conditions in the home and workplace. In addition to the obvious aesthetic benefits of cleaning, the removal of dust, allergens, and infectious agents is crucial to maintaining a healthful indoor environment.

The real reality is we are damaging our DNA and we are changing our genetic makeup for future generations. There was a study a few years back that said the umbilical cord of an average American baby has over 200 known chemicals in it. Eighty percent of the common chemicals that are used daily in this country, we know almost nothing about. Our children are being born toxic and we have no idea if these toxins are already doing some sort of damage their brains, their immune system, their reproductive system, and any other developing organs. Are we unknowingly setting ourselves up for failure in the womb, even before birth?

Scientists and researchers are concerned that many of these chemicals may be carcinogenic or wreak havoc with our hormones, our body’s regulating system. But the impact of these chemicals may be most severe on the developing brain, Perera said.
Brain development is the “most complete and most rapid during the first nine months, prenatally,” she said. During that time, neural connections and pathways are being developed.
“Any interference by a physical stress like a toxic chemical or other stressor can disrupt this natural progression that is so very delicate and complex,” explained Perera.
Though the group hopes to come up with regulatory recommendations to reduce this toxic burden, there are some simple things that individuals can do to reduce their exposure.
 
Children exposed to higher levels of these pesticides have been found to have higher rates of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.
 
Most products have a  warning label that is typed in bold “Keep Out of Reach of Children”.  As consumers, we believe that if our children don’t ingest these products they will not be harmed by them. This can be far from the truth. Think about other common methods of exposure are through the skin and our respiratory tract. WE are along with our children are often in contact with the chemical residues housecleaning products do leave behind, by crawling, lying and sitting on the freshly cleaned floor.
 
 

Scientists at Norway’s University of Bergen tracked 6,000 people, with an average age of 34 at the time of enrollment in the study, who used the cleaning products over a period of two decades, according to the research published in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

They found that lung function decline in women who regularly used the products, such as those who worked as cleaners, was equivalent over the period to those with a 20-cigarette daily smoking habit.

These chemicals can also be found in the shampoos, conditioners, body sprays, hair sprays, perfumes, make up, cleaning supplies, colognes, soap and nail polish that we use.
 
The results follow a study by French scientists in September 2017 that found nurses who used disinfectants to clean surfaces at least once a week had a 24 percent to 32 percent increased risk of developing lung disease.

It’s not enough to be aware of all the outdoor chemicals that we are exposed to everyday but inside our homes we can have more power and control. We have to be more aware about using chemical cleaners, paints, glues, body lotions, toothpastes, underarm deodorants, hair products and pesticides. Instead start to begin to use products that don’t pollute our very own bodies. We must read labels, make our own products and do our own research. I can’t stress this enough. We must take a stand for our health. Stop using commercial products that are laced with unknown and harmful body damaging products.

Bathroom Cleaner

    3 tsp baking soda

    1 TBSP of washing soda (optional)

     8 oz. very hot water

    1 TBSP Sal Suds

    About 1 cup room temperature water

    ¼ tsp lemon essential oil

    ½ tsp orange essential oil

    10 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil

    ¼ tsp clove essential oil

    OR 1 tsp of a “thieves” essential oil instead of these other blends

    16 oz. glass spray bottle

   Pour the baking soda, washing soda and hot water in the spray bottle, then the hot water. Close the lid on the bottle, and shake well until the powder dissolves. Remove the cap and then add the Sal Suds and essential oils. Fill the remainder of the bottle with water until the bottle is almost full, making sure to leave room for the sprayer lid. Give it another shake to combine the mixture and spray on the area you want to clean.  Always use a clean cloth or sponge when cleaning.

   Tub & Tile Cleaner

   1 /4 cup baking soda

    1/4 cup lemon juice

  Or 10 drops of lemon essential oil

    3 Tablespoons Epsom salt

    3 Tablespoons Sal Suds or Castile liquid soap

    1/2 cup white vinegar

   Pour the vinegar into the bottle, followed by the baking soda and Epsom salt. Shake the bottle to combine the ingredients. Add the Sal suds gently shaking the bottle to combine. Mix all ingredients in a bottle with a sealable lid.

Scrub and then rinse with water and wet clean rag.

Hard water Stain Remover

1 cup of Epsom salt

 1/2 cup of baking soda

1/4 cup of Sal suds

½ cup warm water

    Pour the warm water into the bottle, followed by the baking soda and Epsom salt. Shake the bottle to combine the ingredients. Add the Sal suds gently shaking the bottle to combine. Scrub and then rinse with water and wet clean rag.

Soap scum and residue cleaner

    1 1/2 cups baking soda

    1/2 cup natural liquid castile soap

    1/2 cup water

    2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar

Pour the warm water into the bottle, followed by the baking soda and Epsom salt. Shake the bottle to combine the ingredients. Add the Sal suds gently shaking the bottle to combine. Put a small amount of this mixture onto a sponge, wash the surface, and then rinse well. 

 Homemade Grout Cleaner

1/2 cup of baking soda

 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide

 1 teaspoon of Sal Suds

½ cup warm water

    Pour the warm water into the bottle, followed by the baking soda. Allow the baking soda to dissolve. Next add the peroxide. Shake the bottle to combine the ingredients. Add the Sal suds gently shaking the bottle to combine.  Put a small amount of this mixture onto a sponge, wash the surface, and then rinse well.

 

Scented Toilet Paper Rolls

This is a cool DIY bathroom trick. Place a few drops of essential oils onto the inside of your toilet paper roll. Every time you unravel the roll, the beautiful scents will rejuvenate your bathroom!

Natural scouring cream

    1/2 cup baking soda

    18 drops of Thieves oil

    2 1/2 teaspoons liquid castile soap or Sal Suds

Mix all ingredients in a bowl lastly adding the essential oil and it will form a paste.  Put a small amount of this mixture onto a sponge, wash the surface, and then rinse well.

Non-abrasive soft scrubber

    1/4 cup baking soda

    1 teaspoon liquid castile soap or Sal Suds

    1/2 teaspoon lemon essential oil

Mix the baking soda with just enough soap to form a creamy paste. Add the lemon oil and combine well. Put a small amount of this mixture onto a sponge, wash the surface, and then rinse well.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner with hydrogen peroxide

        1/4 to 1/2 cup Hydrogen Peroxide

    1 cup Baking Soda

    3 – 5 drops Essential Oils (Lemon, Lavender, Tea Tree, thieves or Clove are great choices to disinfect and freshen the air)

1/2 cup castile soap

    Sprinkle all ingredients around the toilet bowl; hydrogen peroxide first, then baking soda, last the essential oil. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Scrub and then rinse well

 

Bathroom Mold disinfecting spray

You don’t have to grab bleach to get rid of mold in your bathroom. This 3 combo all natural mixture will do the trick.  I will spray the areas in my bathroom and leave it on for 10 minutes and wipe the moldy areas away. Vodka might be a little bit pricey but you won’t be breathing in toxic chemicals or having to worry about your skin absorbing a list of toxic chemicals.  Vinegar is naturally antimicrobial, tea tree is natural fungicide which can eliminate any mold or mildew problems and kills black mold spores! Don’t forget to label your spray bottle with a black permanent marker.

1 cup of white vinegar

1 cup of vodka

10 drops of tea tree oil

No need to dilute any of this mixture. Place all the ingredients in a spray bottle and label it bathroom mold killer. Mix well.  Spray onto hard surfaces where mold and mildew are growing and let this amazing combo do its cleaning. You’ll still have to scrub a bit, but with repeated use this all-natural cleaner will kill the fungus and help to prevent future growth. Shake each time before use.

Simple all natural air freshener

-clean spray bottle

-10 drops of your favorite essential oil

-2 cups of distilled water

-1 tablespoon of baking soda

Add your water to the spray bottle, next add your baking soda and your favorite essential oil. I always put the lid back on & give it a good shake to mix.  You can spray this on fabric or in the air. Just like you would any store bought synthetic air spray but without the harmful chemicals! Make sure you label all your bottles with a marker to keep track of your DIY products.

This homemade laundry detergent recipe not only keeps those harsh chemicals away but it’s also a cheaper, lasts longer and with all-natural ingredients, it’s a greener, healthier alternative to commercial chemically loaded products. There’s nothing more natural or better than natural products like vinegar, baking soda and essential oils. All my recipes are cheap and healthy plus it is an easy routine that helps to keep your clothes in top shape AND you can feel good about using these products in your home.

 Homemade powder laundry soap

    2/3 cup Super-Washing Soda

   3 tbsp. Baking Soda

    ½ cup Liquid Castile soap

5 cups of water, divided

Directions

    Bring 5 cups of water to a boil.

    Pour washing soda into a large glass bowl then slowly stir in 2 cups of boiling water until washing soda is completely dissolved. Don’t forget to label with a black permanent marker.

Homemade dryer sheets:

2 cup of vinegar

20 drops of your favorite essential oil scents.

Cut 10 pieces of fabric in wash cloths size squares.

1 glass container with a lid

Mix the vinegar and the essential oil scents in the glass container, fold your fabric and place in your jar. Give your jar a good shake and mix the solution all over your fabric.  There are two ways you can do this. 1. After you’ve already dried your clothes, turn your dryer on the no heat cycle and put a few of your dryer sheets in your dried load for about 10 minutes.  But 1st squeeze out excess liquid before you add them in the dryer the sheets should be damp not soaking wet. 2.  Remove a fabric sheet from the jar and squeeze so it is not dripping. Add a sheet to the dryer with wet laundry and dry as usual. Also, don’t be afraid to mix essential oils. Lavender, eucalyptus, lemon and rosemary are very refreshing scents when combined. My favorite homemade laundry scent combinations are:

    Zen Spa – 10 drops eucalyptus, 5 drops lavender

    Floral Dream – 8 drops ylang ylang, 8 drops jasmine

This fabric softener will keep your clothes fresh smelling for a long period of time.

 

You can also just place a wool dryer ball in your and it will naturally help soften and reduce static by bouncing and rubbing against the fabric as it dries.

 FABRIC SOFTENER RECIPE

 1 cup of hot water

 1.5 tsp of baking soda

 3.5 cups apple cedar vinegar

 20 drops of essential oil (your choice).

Large plastic bottle

Place the hot water in the bottle. Next add the apple cedar vinegar and the baking soda. Don’t worry its normal for the chemical reaction to create bubbles. After bubbles go away, add the essential oils. Place the lid on it and give it a good shake. Store it on a dark, cool place. You can use also create a large batch and use this natural softener by adding it in washing machine or soaking your clothes in it. This fabric softener will keep your clothes fresh smelling for a long period of time. Don’t forget to label with a black permanent marker.

 

Honey Vanilla Bubble Bath Recipe

    1/2 cup jojoba, almond, or olive oil

    1/4 cup local, raw or Manuka honey

    1/2 cup Dr. Bonners Liquid Castile Soap

     3 tablespoons of baking soda

   3 tablespoons of Epsom salt

    1 egg white

    1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl or Mason jar and then pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup under running water. This bubble bath doesn’t have any preservatives and it contains egg whites therefore it has a short lifespan. I keep this in my fridge and use it within a week. The egg white is the key to making your bathwater frothy and bubbly.

DIY Liquid Hand Soap

    1/2 cup Dr. Bronners Liquid Castile Soap

    1/2 cup distilled water

    1 TB vitamin E oil (optional)

    1 TB sweet almond oil or olive oil or jojoba oil (optional)

    5 drops lemon essential oil

    5 drops lavender essential oil

    In a Mason jar or recycled soap dispenser, add the water first (to prevent bubbles) then the liquid castile soap, followed by the oils. Shake the ingredients together.

    Shake the soap dispenser before using, then squirt a small amount on your hands as needed, rinsing with water.

 

Natural Citrus Antibacterial Liquid Hand Soap

    1/2 cup Dr. Bonners Liquid Castile Soap

    1/2 cup distilled water

    1 TB vitamin E oil

    1 TB sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, olive oil or jojoba oil

    5 drops lemon essential oil

    5 drops On Guard essential oil

    In a Mason jar or recycled soap dispenser, add the water first (to prevent bubbles) then the liquid castile soap, followed by the oils. Shake the ingredients together.

    Shake the soap dispenser before using, then squirt a small amount on your hands as needed, rinsing with water.

Homemade Shaving Cream

    1 cup shea butter

    1 cup virgin coconut oil

     3 Tablespoons vitamin E oil

    3 Tablespoons sweet almond oil or olive oil or jojoba oil

     3 Tablespoons Dr. Bonners Liquid Castile Soap

     30 drops of lavender essential oil (optional)

     30 drops of lemon essential oil (optional)

I like to use an electric mixer, mixing all ingredients until stiff peaks are formed (approximately 2-3 minutes). Store in a mason jar with a sealable lid.

So there are Fourteen nutrients required for your thyroid to get from your brain creating TSH and stimulating your thyroid gland to produce T4 to T3 and then to activate your cellular metabolic rate. The ten nutrients are:

1.Protein

We want to control blood sugar swings this will help us with a healthy thyroid. Eating  consistent eating throughout the day of high-quality protein at every meal without eating too many carbohydrates.  Remember that blood sugar swings not only affect the thyroid gland itself but also indirectly affect adrenal gland function. You don’t always have to eat meat for protein! Lentils, chickpeas, green peas, quinoa, oatmeal, wild rice, chia seeds, nuts, nut butters, broccoli, spinach, asparagus, artichokes, potatoes, sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts. 2.Magnesium

Magnesium helps you to make more T4 in the thyroid gland. It converts the inactive T4 thyroid hormone into the active form of T3. This is extremely important because the metabolism of your body cells are enhanced by T3, not inactive T4.

3.Zinc                                                                 ( This is the brand that I use) 

Zinc helps to  convert the  thyroid hormone T4 to T3.  Food sources of zinc include shellfish, mollusks, meat, legumes, and nuts. “If you opt for a zinc supplement, 30 milligrams is sufficient.

Foods high in Zinc are:

  • Shrimp.
  • Kidney beans.
  • Flax Seeds.
  • Pumpkin Seeds.
  • Oysters.
  • Watermelon seeds.

Recommended Daily Allowances. Adult men and adolescent boys between 14 and 18 years of age should aim to consume about 11 milligrams of zinc daily, while adult women 19 years old and over need about 8 milligrams. Girls between 14 and 18 require 9 mg per day.

4.Iodine                                                                 ( I don’t take extra iodine, I get it from foods)

We need only 150 mcg of iodine per day in our diet, according to the Institute of Medicine. “That tiny amount of iodine enables the thyroid to manufacture just the right amount of the thyroid hormone thyroxine.  Good food sources include milk, cheese, poultry, eggs, kelp, and other seaweeds. “But you have to be careful with supplementing iodine because too much can be problematic and actually cause hypothyroidism,” Keep an eye on your iodine intake. Most people get enough iodine from their regular diet.

5.Vitamin C                                                       ( This is the brand that I use) 

This vitamin C helps to reduce adrenal stress. It is also a antioxidant that will reduce “oxidative stress placed on the gland either by foreign toxins and harmful free radicals”.

Foods that provide vitamin C are chili peppers,  bell peppers, strawberries, pineapple, mango kiwi, papaya, Brussels sprouts

For adults, the recommended dietary reference intake for vitamin C is 65 to 90 milligrams (mg) a day, and the upper limit is 2,000 mg a day. Although too much dietary vitamin C is unlikely to be harmful, megadoses of vitamin C supplements may cause: Diarrhea. Nausea.

6.Selenium                                                  ( This is the brand that I use) 

Selenium supports efficient thyroid synthesis and metabolism. Foods that provide selenium include tuna, shrimp, salmon, sardines, scallops, lamb, chicken, beef, turkey, eggs, and shitake mushrooms.  You can also eat 2 Brazilian nuts per day and get your RDA!

Most people can get their RDA of selenium from food. In studies to determine if selenium could aid in prostate cancer prevention, men took 200 micrograms daily. The safe upper limit for selenium is 400 micrograms a day in adults. Anything above that is considered an overdose.

7.Vitamin D                                                 ( This is the brand that I use) 

This vitamin helps to transport thyroid hormone in to cells and  helps to heal autoimmune thyroid disease. 20 minutes of sunlight a day is a natural way to get free vitamin d.

Foods that provide vitamin D include:
  • Fatty fish, like tuna, mackerel, and salmon.
  • Foods fortified with vitamin D, like some dairy products, orange juice, soy milk, and cereals.
  • Beef liver.
  • Cheese.
  • Egg yolks.

Vitamin D intake is recommended at 400800 IU/day, or 10–20 micrograms. However, some studies suggest that a higher daily intake of 10004000 IU (25–100 micrograms) is needed to maintain optimal blood levels.

8.Vitamin A                                              ( This is the brand that I use) 

This vitamin  acts on the cells of the body like a hormone because it directly affects the DNA of the cell nucleus directing cellular protein production. The best sources of Vitamin A would be Fermented Cod Liver Oil.

High vitamin A foods include sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, winter squashes, lettuce, dried apricots, cantaloupe, bell peppers, fish, liver, and tropical fruits.

Vitamin A is included in most multivitamins, and the U.S. recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for adults is as follows: 900 micrograms daily (3,000 IU) for men and 700 micrograms daily (2,300 IU) for women; for pregnant women 19 years old and older, 770 micrograms daily (2,600 IU); and for lactating women 19 years old.

Other nutrients that are very important to your thyroid health are:

9.Glutathione

Glutathione is a strong antioxidant that helps balance hormones and boost the immune system.  Dr. Axe has written an article,  9 ways to boost glutathione, check it out.

10.Probiotics    ( I use this brand)

Probitoics are important to your gut health. ( This is the brand that I use)

11.Vitamin B Complex         ( This is the brand that I use) 

Make sure it has all the b vitamins in it. This vitamin have many interactions with thyroid function and hormone regulation. Good food sources of vitamin B include whole grains, legumes, nuts, milk, yogurt, meat, fish, eggs, seeds, and dark leafy greens.

Recommended dietary amounts (RDAs) are 2.4 micrograms daily for ages 14 years and older, 2.6 micrograms daily for pregnant females, and 2.8 micrograms daily for breastfeeding females. Those over 50 years of age should meet the RDA by eating foods reinforced with B12 or by taking a vitamin B12 supplement.

12.Vitamin E                                  ( This is the brand that I use) 

A contains carotenes which is what the thyroid needs to help it function normally.  However, when you take your vitamin E  it is also recommended that you have your selenium at the same time as vitamin E because the vitamin can cause an increase in the metabolism of selenium.

Vitamin E Rich Foods List
  • 1) Almonds. 1 oz: 7.3 mg (27% DV)
  • 2) Spinach. 1 bunch: 6.9 mg (26% DV)
  • 3) Sweet Potato. 1 Tbsp: 4.2 mg (15% DV)
  • 4) Avocado. 1 whole: 2.7 mg (10% DV)
  • 5) Wheat germ. 1 ounce: 4.5 mg (17% DV)
  • 6) Sunflower seeds. 2 Tbsp: 4.2 mg (15% DV)
  • 7) Palm Oil. 1 Tbsp: 2.2 mg (11% DV)
  • 8) Butternut squash.

For adults older than 18 years, pregnant women, and breastfeeding women, the maximum dose is 1,000 milligrams daily (or 1,500 IU). For age-related macular degeneration, 30 milligrams to 500-600 IU of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) has been taken by mouth daily for 4-8 years.

13.Flaxseed oil                      ( this is the brand that I use)

Omega-3 fatty acids can help”decrease inflammation and help with immunity” for thyroid support. Some studies have indicated that omega-3 fatty acids can increase thyroid hormone uptake.

14.Curcumin-                                      ( This is the brand that I use) 

Also know as turmeric. Turmeric can be helpful in reducing whole body inflammation, healing the gut, as well as detoxifying from heavy metals in those with autoimmunity.

Supplement ingredients to avoid

This was in one of my thyroid support pills. I started to have more heart palpitations and my bp was rising. Research- research-and research! Never take anyone word for granted. You must figure out what is best for your body and most important listen to your body.

L-tyrosine- The body naturally produces thyroid hormones. Tyrosine might increase how much thyroid hormone the body produces. Taking tyrosine with thyroid hormone pills might cause there to be too much thyroid hormone. This could increase the effects and side effects of thyroid hormones. It also can block other medications along with interacting . It is possible to end up with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) from supplementing with L-tyrosine. Kelp, a type of seaweed that is often marketed for thyroid health, is loaded with iodine. For example, a serving (one drop) of Liquid Kelp, a dietary supplement promoted for “Thyroid Gland Support,” contains 800 mcg of iodine. “Most people get enough iodine from their regular diet,” Lipman says. But if you take a supplement that contains kelp, plus a multivitamin, such as GNC Women’s Ultra Mega One Daily containing 150 mcg of iodine, and also use iodized salt that contains 400 mcg of iodine per teaspoon, it’s easy to consume far more iodine than your thyroid needs—and thats not healthy for you.

6.Eat more Organic foods which contain fewer amounts of chemicals and pesticides which, as you know from the thyroid-disrupting chemical chapter article, can have a negative effect on the thyroid gland.

Rebounding is an super gentle exercise that reduces your body fat; firms your legs, thighs, abdomen, arms, and hips; increases your agility; and improves your sense of balance. It  will  strengthen your overall muscles and provide an easy aerobic effect on your heart. Along with having excellent detox and immune building benefits it helps the lymphatic system get rid of that metabolic garbage build up which can be  dead and cancerous cells, nitrogenous wastes, infectious viruses and heavy metals. With all this being said why are you not rebounding?

Somewhere in my day I try to soak up 20 minutes of sun

I make sure I get all my water in I have to have no less than 75oz’s per day.

How you calculate your water intake is your weight divided by 2

So if you weigh 150lbs divide that by 2 and its 75. 75oz’s

Never-ever drink your water intake @ 1 time. People have died from that. Water toxicity.

Also 1-2 glasses of red wine.
