Gratitude is the New Superpower: Boost Your Immunity and Sleep with a Thankful Heart By A.L. Childers, Wellness Blogger and Hypothyroidism Advocate

Gratitude is the New Superpower: Boost Your Immunity and Sleep with a Thankful Heart
By A.L. Childers, Wellness Blogger and Hypothyroidism Advocate

Let’s face it—there are times when feeling grateful is the last thing on your mind. After all, our brains are wired to solve problems, not count blessings. But what if I told you that the simple act of practicing gratitude can do wonders for your mental and physical health? Yep, science says so! Not only does gratitude improve your mood and reduce anxiety, but it can also boost your immune system, help you sleep better, and even lower your risk of chronic illness.

I know what you’re thinking—sounds too good to be true, right? Well, let’s dive into the science behind it and why this matters, especially if you’re battling hypothyroidism like me.

Why Gratitude Is Your Hypothyroidism Secret Weapon

When you’re dealing with hypothyroidism, you know it’s more than just a sluggish thyroid. Fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, weight gain—it’s like living in a body that feels perpetually out of sync. While there’s no magic pill to make it all disappear, there are some tools you can use to take back control, and gratitude is one of them.

As Amanda Logan, APRN, C.N.P., points out in the Mayo Clinic’s Speaking of Health series: “Behavior changes biology.” In other words, what we do and how we think can physically change how our bodies function. For those of us with hypothyroidism, gratitude can help us get out of the cycle of stress and fatigue, making it easier to support our immune system and get the sleep our bodies desperately need.

The Science of Gratitude and Immunity

In a fascinating study published in Emotion magazine, researchers explored how gratitude affects the immune system. Sixty-one women participated in the study, half of whom were asked to practice gratitude daily. At the end of the six weeks, those who actively practiced gratitude engaged more in supportive care for others. What’s more interesting is that their blood work showed better immune function. Specifically, they had lower levels of interleukin 6, an inflammatory marker linked to chronic diseases .

How does this connect to hypothyroidism? Well, hypothyroidism often comes with inflammation and a compromised immune system. Practicing gratitude might not only help reduce stress but could potentially lower inflammation, giving your thyroid a fighting chance to work more effectively.

Gratitude for Better Sleep? Yes, Please!

Let’s be honest, hypothyroidism and restful sleep are not best friends. Between night sweats, anxiety, and general discomfort, it can feel like good sleep is a myth. But here’s where gratitude comes in.

In a study of 401 participants (40% of whom had clinical sleep disorders), those who practiced gratitude reported falling asleep faster, sleeping longer, and feeling more refreshed in the morning. Why? Because gratitude helps eliminate those pesky negative thoughts that keep you tossing and turning at night. Instead of worrying about tomorrow’s to-do list, you go to bed feeling content and calm . And trust me, when you have hypothyroidism, a good night’s sleep is everything.

Simple Ways to Add Gratitude to Your Daily Life

Now that we know how powerful gratitude can be for both your immunity and sleep, let’s talk about some easy ways to incorporate it into your daily routine:

  1. Gratitude Journal: Each morning and night, jot down three things you’re thankful for. This simple habit can shift your mindset and help you focus on the positive.
  2. Subtraction Method: Not feeling particularly thankful? Try the subtraction method—imagine your life without something or someone you love, then reflect on how much they truly mean to you. It’s a great way to feel more appreciative.
  3. Morning Gratitude: As soon as you wake up, think of someone you’re grateful for and send them a kind message, text, or note. It’s a small gesture that goes a long way, both for your well-being and theirs.
  4. Daily Reflection: Each day, ask yourself, “How do I want to live today? In a rush, taking everything for granted, or with appreciation and contentment?” Choose gratitude!

A Holistic Approach to Supercharging Your Immune System

While gratitude can do wonders, it sometimes needs a little backup, especially when dealing with hypothyroidism. That’s where plant-based solutions and holistic practices come in.

If you need extra support with stress, sleep, and immunity, consider incorporating herbal blends into your routine. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Anxiety & Stress Blend: This blend helps your body adapt to stress, calm your nervous system, and improve cognitive function. It’s perfect for those moments when anxiety gets in the way of a restful night’s sleep.
  • Eastern Immune Blend: This powerhouse combo of Chinese skullcap, Japanese honeysuckle, and cordyceps mushroom can support immune function, reduce inflammation, and even help with viral infections.
  • Sleep Blend: Formulated with valerian root, hops, chamomile, and passionflower, this blend helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Plus, it works wonders for managing menopause-related sleep disturbances.

Thyroid-Friendly Recipes to Boost Immunity

While you’re practicing gratitude and working on sleep, don’t forget that your diet plays a huge role in thyroid health. Here are a couple of my favorite thyroid-friendly recipes:

Healing Bone Broth

  • 2 pounds of grass-fed bones (beef or chicken)
  • 1 onion, quartered
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Himalayan salt

Directions:
Place all ingredients in a slow cooker, cover with water, and cook on low for 24 hours. Strain and sip on this nutrient-rich broth throughout the day to support your gut, thyroid, and immune system.

Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Smoothie

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 banana
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Directions:
Blend all ingredients until smooth and enjoy! Turmeric and cinnamon help reduce inflammation, while coconut oil supports thyroid function.

From Stressed to Blessed: My Journey with Hypothyroidism and How You Can Kick Its Booty Too By A.L. Childers, Author and Wellness Blogger

A personal favorite quote of mine is, “From stressed to blessed.” I don’t just say this—I mean it, I believe it, and I live by it. You see, I’ve been battling hypothyroidism for years, and let me tell you, it’s no picnic. But I’ve learned how to turn that daily struggle into something empowering, something that’s made me stronger. And now, I’m here to help you do the same.

Living with hypothyroidism can feel like running a marathon in quicksand. The weight gain, fatigue, brain fog—it all feels so heavy, and on top of that, I found most doctors just handed me a prescription and sent me on my way. No one talked to me about diet or lifestyle changes that could actually make a difference. But I knew there had to be more. So, I took matters into my own hands and created a handbook to help others affected by this disorder—a user-friendly guide that’ll help you fight back, reclaim your life, and feel confident again.

Why I Wrote This Guide

Over the years, I’ve seen so many doctors, and none of them offered me real ideas for a sustainable diet or ways to naturally heal my thyroid. I felt like I was being passed from one expert to the next, always hoping that the next visit would be the one. But no one was talking about how to shed the extra pounds, boost my energy, or regain my vitality.

So, I started researching on my own, and I made some serious lifestyle changes. My energy came back, I lost the weight, and more importantly, I began to feel strong and beautiful again. That’s when I decided to write this handbook—not just for myself, but for anyone out there who feels trapped by hypothyroidism.

What You’ll Find Inside

This guide isn’t just another book on hypothyroidism filled with medical jargon. It’s a heartfelt guide filled with practical tips, recipes, and advice on how to:

  • Choose the right foods that fuel your body and support your thyroid
  • Eliminate harmful toxins from your home
  • Start losing those extra pounds in a healthy, sustainable way
  • Boost your energy levels and rediscover your confidence
  • Build a lifestyle that supports your well-being and brings back your vitality

Whether you’re looking for meal plans or tips for managing stress, I’ve packed this guide with all the tools you need to feel like yourself again.

Life is a Journey, Not a Destination

Here’s something I’ve learned along the way: laugh at yourself as much as possible! Life is too short to take everything so seriously. I believe each of us is destined for our own path, our own journey. I can’t walk your path for you, just like you can’t walk mine—but that’s the beauty of it. We all have our own unique story to tell, and it’s up to us to own that journey and make the most of it.

I want to be remembered as a pioneer—someone who thought, imagined, and inspired. If I can help just one person feel strong, sexy, and confident again, then my job is done. Life is a wonderful journey filled with twists and turns, but when you’re armed with the right tools, you can face anything that comes your way. And together, we’re going to kick hypothyroidism’s booty!

“Dressings Done Right: 4 Simple and Delicious Recipes to Kick Hypothyroidism’s Booty!”

Let’s be real for a moment. You think you’re making the healthiest choice by loading up on a vibrant, veggie-packed salad, but then—bam—you drown it in over-the-counter dressing that’s secretly filled with enough chemicals to make a mad scientist blush. Seriously, have you ever read the labels on those store-bought dressings? It’s like a chemistry experiment gone wrong: calcium disodium EDTA, MSG, modified cornstarch… do we want a salad that comes from a lab, or do we want something from our own kitchen?

Making your own salad dressing doesn’t require a PhD in chemistry, and it’s surprisingly easy, fast, and (wait for it…) healthy! Plus, when you take the time to whip up your own, you’re actually catering to your thyroid and overall health instead of sabotaging it. So let’s toss that store-bought junk and dive into these four super simple, thyroid-friendly salad dressings you can make at home.

Oh, and if you’re looking for more thyroid-loving recipes and tips, be sure to check out my book, “A Survivor’s Cookbook Guide to Kicking Hypothyroidism’s Booty”. It’s filled with delicious recipes that’ll not only nourish your thyroid but also help you reclaim your vitality!

Cilantro Lime Salad Dressing Recipe

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup raw honey
  • ½ cup lime juice
  • ½ cup cilantro
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Jalapenos (optional, for a kick)
  • Avocado (optional, for creaminess)

Directions:
Throw all the ingredients in a blender and blend for about 30 to 40 seconds. This dressing can be used on salads, grilled chicken, or even fish. YUM! Plus, it takes just as long to make as it does to open a bottle of mystery-chemical-laden dressing from the store.

Lemon Garlic Salad Dressing

Ingredients:

  • 1 large garlic clove
  • ¾ cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (or substitute with raw honey)
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice

Directions:
Toss everything in a blender and blend until creamy. Voilà! You’ve got yourself a delicious dressing that’s both light and refreshing—and won’t mess with your thyroid function. Lemon and garlic? That’s a power duo your thyroid will thank you for.

Caesar Salad Dressing (The Real Deal)

Ingredients:

  • 6 anchovy fillets (drained)
  • 1 small garlic clove
  • Sea salt
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • ¾ teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, but delish!)

Directions:
Blend the anchovies and garlic into a fine paste. Next, add the salt, egg yolks, lemon juice, mustard, and EVOO into the blender and whip until smooth and thick. Toss over Romaine lettuce, sprinkle some Parmesan on top, and you’re set! Who knew Caesar could be thyroid-friendly?

Honey Mustard Vinaigrette

Ingredients:

  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1½ teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1½ teaspoons raw honey
  • ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • Freshly ground pepper and Himalayan sea salt to taste

Directions:
Throw all the ingredients into a mason jar, give it a good shake, and you’re done! Shake, shake, shake your way to thyroid health! Store in the fridge and pull it out when your salad needs a pick-me-up.

Why Homemade is Better for Your Thyroid

Aside from the fact that homemade dressings taste infinitely better, they’re also packed with real ingredients that won’t sabotage your health. Store-bought dressings are filled with preservatives, refined oils, and sugars that contribute to inflammation, which can be disastrous for your thyroid. But with these quick and easy dressings, you’re feeding your body (and thyroid) the nutrients it truly needs.

If you’re serious about healing your thyroid, ditch the store-bought dressings and start making your own! These recipes take less time than reading the unpronounceable ingredients on that bottle you’ve been using.

“How I Beat Hashimoto’s: A Realistic Guide to Taking Back Your Health (No Magic Beans Required!)”

Let me start by saying this: there’s no magic pill, no secret bean, and I definitely can’t twitch my nose like Samantha from Bewitched to make my Hashimoto’s vanish. I wish! The truth is, I had to take matters into my own hands and fight for my health like the warrior queen I knew I was. But trust me, it wasn’t easy. In a world that promises “miracle weight loss products”, my reality was quite different—yet I learned how to truly heal from Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and put it into remission.

A Look in the Mirror (No, Seriously)

There I was at 45, staring in the mirror, and wondering why on earth my pants refused to cooperate with my waistline. If I could just snap my fingers and not have that “extra skin” hanging over the edges, life would be golden! But instead of wishing for an easy way out, I knew this was all on me. I had been diagnosed with hypothyroidism after giving birth to twins at 25, and for years, I was misdiagnosed, mislabeled, and misunderstood. It took a lot of persistence, and asking my doctor to run a full thyroid panel before I finally got the answer: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

For those of you new to the Hashimoto’s club (welcome, by the way), it’s an autoimmune condition where your immune system thinks your thyroid is the enemy, attacking it like it’s trying to invade the mothership. Long story short, my thyroid was under attack, and my metabolism wasn’t pulling its weight.

The Symptoms We Don’t Talk About (Enough)

Hashimoto’s isn’t just about weight gain. Oh no, it’s the whole package—fatigue, brittle hair, brain fog, and this fun little thing called depression (except that part where I screamed to my doctors, “I’M NOT DEPRESSED!”). My thyroid wasn’t producing the hormones I needed, and that meant my metabolism had taken a permanent vacation.

I had a choice: either accept defeat or start fighting back. Spoiler alert: I chose to fight back.

Step 1: Supporting My Adrenals (No, Seriously, They’re Exhausted)

Here’s what they don’t tell you: your adrenal glands need all the love they can get, especially if you’re battling Hashimoto’s. Your adrenals produce over 50 hormones, and when you’re constantly eating refined foods and sugars, your blood sugar spikes, and your adrenals release more cortisol (aka the “stress hormone”). That spike? It’s the reason why your metabolism slows down and why you feel like you’re running on empty 90% of the time.

So I ditched the junk and focused on nutrient-dense foods: coconut oil, grass-fed meats, wild-caught fish, and good old-fashioned vegetables. And you know what? It worked. My adrenals finally stopped waving the white flag.

Step 2: Fluoride – A Big Nope for Your Thyroid

Did you know fluoride was once prescribed to suppress thyroid function? Yep, it was the go-to in the 1950s for people with overactive thyroids. No, thank you! So, I invested in a good water filtration system (hello, Berkey filter!) and swapped my toothpaste for fluoride-free options. Every little change made a big difference.

Step 3: Hormone Balancing Like a Pro

Balancing your hormones isn’t just about popping a pill. I found a holistic doctor who helped me sort through the mess that is modern hormone therapy. Omega-3s, gut healing foods, and good old-fashioned sunbathing (Vitamin D, baby!) became my new routine. By balancing my gut health and eliminating inflammatory foods, I started to see real changes in my energy and overall health.

Step 4: Gut Health is EVERYTHING

Your gut is your second brain, and it plays a huge role in how your thyroid functions. I loaded up on probiotics, fermented foods, and cut back on sugar and carbs. That combination did wonders for my digestive system—and as it turns out, for my thyroid, too.

Step 5: Learn to Say No (And Yes to Self-Care)

I used to be the queen of saying yes to everything. But how can I take care of anyone else if my own health is on the backburner? It was time to say no more often and focus on self-care. That meant long walks, detox baths, and days where I just rested without guilt. Self-care is not selfish, it’s survival!

Step 6: Move That Body

Listen, I’m not saying you need to become a gym rat, but movement is key to healing. Walking, light cardio, and even rebounding (yes, on a mini-trampoline!) helped me reset my metabolism and fight off those Hashimoto’s blues.

Step 7: Detox Your Life

I got rid of the artificial junk—sweeteners, chemicals in skincare products, and anything else toxic. If I couldn’t eat it, I wasn’t putting it on my skin. It’s that simple.

A Little Humor, A Lot of Healing

Healing from Hashimoto’s is not about perfection—it’s about progress. I had to get real with myself and my lifestyle, making changes that would support long-term health instead of quick fixes. But let’s be real: there were plenty of moments where I just had to laugh at the craziness of it all. I mean, who knew I’d be excited about bone broth and seaweed?

Why Coffee Could Be Bad for You and Your Thyroid: What You Need to Know About Cortisol By A.L. Childers, Author and Wellness Blogger

or many of us, coffee is the go-to fuel that gets us through the day. Its rich aroma and caffeine boost make it seem like the perfect pick-me-up. But what if I told you that your morning cup of coffee could actually be harming your thyroid and overall health? This is especially important for those struggling with thyroid issues, like hypothyroidism, or anyone looking to optimize their well-being.

The Link Between Coffee and Cortisol

The key issue with coffee consumption is its direct impact on cortisol, the hormone produced by your adrenal glands in response to stress. While cortisol has its place in the body—helping regulate metabolism, reduce inflammation, and assist in memory formation—too much of it can wreak havoc, especially when triggered excessively by caffeine. When you drink coffee, particularly on an empty stomach, it spikes cortisol levels, which can be problematic over time. Chronic elevation of cortisol can suppress thyroid function, leading to a cascade of health problems, including fatigue, weight gain, and mood imbalances.

What Does Cortisol Do to Your Thyroid?

For those dealing with hypothyroidism or any thyroid dysfunction, cortisol plays a crucial role. Elevated cortisol levels can:

  1. Slow down your metabolism – When cortisol levels are high for extended periods, your thyroid hormone production decreases. This leads to a slower metabolism, making it harder to burn calories and maintain healthy energy levels.
  2. Impair thyroid hormone conversion – Your thyroid produces two key hormones: T4 (inactive) and T3 (active). The body needs to convert T4 into T3 for your cells to use it properly. Chronic cortisol elevations interfere with this conversion, leaving you with less active thyroid hormone, which contributes to the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
  3. Suppress thyroid function directly – Cortisol can directly reduce the production of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), further lowering thyroid function. If your TSH levels drop, your body produces less thyroid hormone, affecting everything from your energy to your weight.

How Cortisol Adds Fat Around Your Midsection

Cortisol has earned a reputation for promoting fat storage—particularly around the midsection. High cortisol levels signal your body to store fat, especially visceral fat, which wraps around your internal organs and leads to increased risks for heart disease, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. When you’re under chronic stress or consistently drinking coffee, you’re sending signals to your body that it’s time to hold onto fat, making weight loss nearly impossible for some people. This effect is amplified in individuals with thyroid disorders, as their metabolism is already compromised.

Alternatives to Coffee That Support Your Thyroid

So, if coffee is a potential culprit, what can you do instead? There are plenty of alternatives that not only provide energy but also support your thyroid and overall health:

  • Herbal teas like licorice root and ginger help to balance hormones and provide a natural energy boost without overloading your system with caffeine.
  • Green tea has a lower caffeine content and is rich in antioxidants, which can support thyroid function and reduce inflammation.
  • Bone broth is full of nutrients that can heal your gut and nourish your thyroid.

Taking a holistic approach to your thyroid health means reducing your caffeine intake, managing your stress levels, and incorporating more nutrient-dense foods into your diet.

Why This Matters for Your Health

If you’re dealing with thyroid issues like hypothyroidism or just trying to maintain optimal health, managing your cortisol levels should be a priority. Cutting back on coffee and adopting healthier habits can have a profound impact on your metabolism, energy levels, and even your mood. It’s all about taking a proactive approach and recognizing the powerful connection between what we consume and how our body functions.

Take Control of Your Health: A Comprehensive Guide to Managing Hypothyroidism

When I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I remember feeling overwhelmed and lost. I spent years searching for solutions, piecing together bits of information from doctors, nutritionists, and health experts. If only someone had handed me a clear, step-by-step guide that addressed not just the symptoms but the underlying causes of this condition. That’s exactly what this book offers—an all-in-one resource designed to help you navigate hypothyroidism with confidence.

The solutions I’ve gathered here have helped countless others regain control of their health, and I’ve carefully pulled from the expertise of leading researchers and clinicians, alongside my own personal journey and clinical experience. This book is built to save you time and frustration, offering actionable advice and easy-to-understand explanations of what’s happening in your body.

Understanding Hypothyroidism: It’s More Than Just a Pill

For too long, the standard medical approach to hypothyroidism has been to prescribe a pill and move on. But for so many, this “one pill” solution is not working because it doesn’t address the root cause. Research has shown that factors like inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and nutrient deficiencies often play a major role in thyroid dysfunction. In fact, a study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that up to 90% of hypothyroidism cases are caused by Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition that requires a more comprehensive approach beyond just medication.

What Affects Your Thyroid Health?

Many people don’t realize that multiple factors—beyond genetics—impact thyroid health. Here are some key elements that can affect your thyroid function:

  1. Stress: Chronic stress triggers the release of cortisol, which can interfere with the production of thyroid hormones. A paper published in Endocrine Reviews highlights how elevated cortisol levels over time can suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) production, leading to impaired thyroid function.
  2. Environmental Toxins: Everyday toxins like BPA (found in plastics) and heavy metals such as mercury can disrupt thyroid function. According to a study published in Environmental Health Perspectives, exposure to BPA has been linked to lower levels of T3 and T4 hormones, critical components in maintaining a healthy metabolism.
  3. Nutrient Deficiencies: Essential nutrients like iodine, selenium, and zinc are crucial for thyroid function. Iodine is needed for thyroid hormone production, and selenium plays a role in converting T4 into its active form, T3. Research in Thyroid journal indicates that selenium deficiency can exacerbate symptoms of hypothyroidism, highlighting the need for proper nutrition.

How Your Food Can Impact Your Thyroid

What you eat plays a significant role in the health of your thyroid. Processed foods, sugar, and inflammatory ingredients can trigger thyroid imbalances, while a diet rich in whole foods can support optimal thyroid function. Here are a few dietary changes that can make a big difference:

  • Anti-Inflammatory Diet: A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that inflammatory diets are linked to a higher risk of hypothyroidism. Reducing processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats can help lower inflammation and improve thyroid function.
  • Cruciferous Vegetables: While foods like broccoli and kale are known for their health benefits, they contain goitrogens, which can interfere with thyroid hormone production when eaten in excess. However, cooking these vegetables reduces goitrogenic properties. A balanced intake of these foods can still provide essential nutrients without compromising thyroid health.
  • Iodine-Rich Foods: Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, and incorporating foods like seaweed, fish, and dairy can help meet your daily requirements. According to a paper in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, iodine deficiency remains a leading cause of thyroid disorders worldwide, making it crucial to monitor your intake.
  • Selenium and Zinc: Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, and eggs are excellent sources of selenium, which is needed to convert inactive thyroid hormone (T4) to its active form (T3). Similarly, zinc, found in foods like oysters, beef, and pumpkin seeds, plays a critical role in regulating the immune system and supporting thyroid function.

Empower Yourself with Knowledge

Knowledge truly is power, and understanding how your lifestyle, environment, and diet affect your thyroid is the first step toward reclaiming your health. Scientific research shows that with the right combination of medical treatment, lifestyle adjustments, and dietary changes, many individuals can dramatically improve their thyroid function.

This book is designed to educate and empower you to take ownership of your health. Through its pages, you’ll learn how to identify and address the root causes of your hypothyroidism, rather than relying solely on a quick fix that might not solve the underlying problem. You’ll discover how to support your thyroid naturally, manage symptoms, and lead a happier, healthier life.

Ready to Take Control?

If you’re ready to stop feeling like your thyroid is controlling your life, this book is your road map to wellness. Don’t waste years searching for answers—start your journey today and discover the tools you need to take control of your thyroid health and, ultimately, your life.

Take the first step to a healthier you. Get your copy now and transform your thyroid health for good.
