“Navigating Family Drama: The Unexpected Path to Finding My Own Strength”

My life, I must say, could fill a few books—and not the boring kind either. More like a roller-coaster of soap opera-level drama, plot twists, and moments that would leave you both laughing and shaking your head. I was born in November of 1972, and let’s just say the identity of my father has been a mystery for as long as I can remember. My mother once gave me the name of a man who, in true dramatic fashion, accused her of giving him an STD during a speakerphone call where her current husband could hear everything. Talk about awkward! Spoiler alert: He was married to someone my age, so yeah, it was a mess.

But my two aunts, Rhonda and Betty (Betty was my favorite—sassy and sweet all rolled into one), said my dad was a different guy—some fellow named John Moore from Virginia. Both men were in the military stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. So, you do the math on how that might’ve gone down. As you can imagine, growing up with such a foggy father situation was the tip of the iceberg when it came to the colorful chaos of my childhood.

Then there was my brother. He was mean to me, like a cartoon villain without the mustache to twirl. At 13, he was sent off to a boys’ school in Columbia, SC, for—you guessed it—breaking into cars and stealing things like spare change from my mom’s boyfriends. But before that, he tormented me in creative ways. One of his favorites was spitting food back onto my plate and forcing me to eat it (yum, right?). He’d even strap me into his old middle school football gear and use me as his personal tackling dummy—while wearing his high school football gear! Talk about unfair! Looking back, it probably should’ve been an episode of “What Not to Do to Your Sibling.”

Meanwhile, my mother was quite the character. She adored my older brother and later, my younger sister. I? I was the live-in maid. I was cleaning the house and cooking dinner at 10, all while being the unofficial babysitter to my little sister, who was five years younger. And she was the ultimate brat—of course, my sleepovers weren’t complete unless she came along. The one time I tried to get a little revenge by putting mustard in her mouth while she slept… well, let’s just say, I didn’t exactly feel guilty.

My mother married four times—yes, four—and none of those men were my father, mind you. She’s never been able to definitively say who my father is, but the options all point to the fine military men at Fort Bragg. Despite it all, when I left home at 16, I didn’t look back. I had experienced enough. But there was one particular memory that sticks out as the final nail in the coffin of our “mother-daughter bond.”

It was my senior prom. Prom—a rite of passage, right? My mother didn’t bother to help me get ready for it. Instead, she lavished all her attention on my seventh-grade sister for her dance. Bought her a dress, got her hair and nails done—she went all out. Me? My best friend’s mom helped me pull it together. I borrowed a dress, my cousin bought me shoes, and I was grateful for their kindness. My mom made sure that I knew where I stood, and it wasn’t at the top of her list.

My mother also had a knack for pitting my sister and me against each other. I swore I would never do that to my own kids. And guess what? I haven’t. I’ve always told my kids, “You need each other. Be kind to one another. I won’t always be here.” And they are kind. They love each other, and that’s the kind of legacy I want to leave behind.

Now, let me give credit where it’s due. Despite the hurt, when my mother had a stroke and needed help, I didn’t hesitate. My family packed her things, drove her back, set up doctor appointments, and helped her navigate the process of getting disability. Yet, even then, the drama continued. She complained to me about moving in with us, crying that she wanted to stay with my sister. When I mentioned this to my sister, our mother flat-out denied it. Just another day in the life of unnecessary drama.

My mother once told me, “I hope before I die, you and your sister can be friends again.” To which I replied, “Well, you’re the reason we’re not friends.” She doesn’t understand that. Maybe she never will, but I do.

At the end of the day, life’s a series of lessons wrapped in strange, often absurd moments. Through the chaos, I’ve learned to rise above, to love deeply, and to cherish the people who show up for me, even when others don’t. Family isn’t always what you’re born into—it’s what you create from the experiences that shape you.

So, here’s to the messes that make us stronger and the laughter that keeps us sane. Because if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that sometimes you just have to find humor in the heartache and keep moving forward.

Let Me Add to This Story: The Mystery of My “Sperm Donor” Father

Oh, before I wrap this up, let me sprinkle a little more drama onto this family saga! I still have no idea who my biological father is. He probably doesn’t even know I exist. The last name I carry belongs to my mother’s first husband—not because he fathered me, but because, in 1972, having a baby out of wedlock in a small town was basically social suicide. My grandmother, who was a nurse at the hospital where I was born, made sure I got that husband’s last name just to keep up appearances. I’m sure my birth raised a few eyebrows back then, but the truth? Well, that’s still tucked away in some Fort Bragg mystery, never to be fully uncovered.

Funny how life can be one giant game of “Who’s Your Daddy?”
