How to get out of survival mode Tip #4:

Avoiding Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors & Reducing Our Toxic Burden

Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors

Medications

This is such an important yet touchy topic. Medications that you take can be thyroid suppressive. Many S.S.R.I. anti-depressant drugs have fluoride as their main ingredient. Fluoride is a very sneaky endocrine disruptor where the body mistakes it for something else and actually it will recognize it as iodine. Iodine is vital for every major function in the body. You see, our body is absorbing this fluoride believing it to be this fake iodine and placing it into all the human organs where it will have remain mostly stored. Fluoride is mimicking iodine. This big pretender manifests itself where it will build up over time on a cellular level in every major organ because very little of the fluoride that is absorbed and stored in our organs will be removed as a waste product in our urine or sweat. Continuous absorption of fluoride builds up in our tissues and eventually will lead to toxicity in the body. This can also cause lesions on the thyroid gland. Fluoride is also found in our tap water, bottled water, toothpastes, mouth rinses, pesticides and used as cleaning agents.

Did you know that only 10% of an individual’s serotonin is used by your brain, while about 80% of it is used by your digestive system?

Most of us know that serotonin is a chemical in the brain that can affect our mood. It is known as a neurotransmitter, although some consider it to be a hormone. This neurotransmitter aka hormone is 80% produced in the intestines and 10% in the brain. We can also find it floating around in our blood platelets as well in our central nervous system too.

Our gut plays a major role when it comes to our mood. If we eat foods that contain the essential amino acid known as tryptophan. This can help the body to produce more serotonin. Foods, including salmon, eggs, spinach, and seeds are among those that help boost serotonin naturally. Taking a supplement that has omega 3, 7 & 9 along with a good vitamin d has been known to help people with depression in healthy adults but the studies are still on going. ( https://www.vitalstudy.org/) and it has had promising results with postpartum depression, psychiatric conditions including schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and attention deficit disorder but the studies are still ongoing and not enough evidence to crack this case just yet. Up unto this time more research is needed but it certainly promising.

A leaking gut is a terrible thing and I will get into it later in this book but healing your gut can solve many problems people are faced with their failing health. Without your body being able to absorb the proper nutrients, your hypothyroidism will never begin to heal, because this nutrient serotonin is a major player and is needed to balance the hormones and to start to strengthen your thyroid.

Some medications that people take can be the root of many nutritional deficiencies. Some medications are the main reason why their thyroid became suppressed in the 1st place and they have been now diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Many different drugs can affect thyroid function. A small batch of medications including glucocorticoids, dopamine agonists, somatostatin analogs and rexinoids affect thyroid function through suppression of TSH in the thyrotrope (thyrotrophs) or hypothalamus.

Thyrotropes (also called thyrotrophs) are endocrine cells in the anterior pituitary which produce thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in response to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH). The hypothalamus is a small region of the brain. It’s located at the base of the brain, near the pituitary gland. While it’s very small, the hypothalamus plays a crucial role in many important functions, including: releasing hormones.

Drugs have chemicals and they can be tainted. They can have unintended side effects, intended side effects, and they can actually do more harm than the good.

The FDA is not some magical group of fairies that work with humans who are going to save you from harm. They certainly would love for you to think so…. but they aren’t. Just because something is FDA approved does NOT mean it’s safe.

You can never trust a drug company (or federal agency) to “have your back.” It just isn’t reality. You must take matters into your own hands.

Drugs known to affect thyroid function in patients with an intact hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis.

If you are taking a thyroid medication, if you haven’t noticed already, there is a list on the prescription package warning label telling you to avoid taking certain medications within 4 hours after your thyroid medications or not to take at all within a certain time frame of your thyroid mediations. Your pharmacist can explain and share this knowledge with you or you can simply read the packet that comes with your thyroid medication.

Example:

1.   1st of all for best absorption into your bloodstream, thyroid medication should be taken on an empty stomach 30-60 minutes before breakfast, or three or more hours after dinner. Especially if you must have coffee wait 1 hour after your medication intake because coffee, unless spaced apart by more than an hour, may reduce the absorption of your thyroid medication by about 30 percent.

 2.  A number of drugs have been shown to weaken the absorption of thyroid medications; these drugs include calcium carbonate, aluminum- containing antacids, sucralfate, iron supplements, cholestyramine, sevelamer, and, possibly, ciprofloxacin, raloxifene, orlistat, estrogen hormone replacement therapy, Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole, esomeprazole, or pantoprazole also interfere with the absorption of your thyroid meds, meaning these medications can actually make your thyroid medication weaker and you need a higher dose.

***As always please check with your health care provider***

Social media has really exploded with information and making things that are done in the dark come to light very easily accessible. It seems Big Pharma is the new mafia our century. Did you know that our prescription drugs are the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer in the United States and in Europe? I am sure the statics has changed since I’ve written the findings in this book. Close to half the people who has died were taken their medications correctly; the other half died because of errors, such as too high a dose, mixture of other medications or use of a drug despite them telling their doctors their concerns and it being brushed off as they have no idea what is good for their bodies. People often times feel forced to take the medication or made to feel inadequate if they doubt what their doctor has suggested. Our drug companies are not particularly reliable either, who do you think pay for these studies and in the news recently how some of these studies were paid extra to be swayed to make the medication look good knowing the risks for outweigh the benefit. These medications that have a long list of warnings, precautions, and caution for each drug. You can turn on your television and wait to listen to the commercials when these medications are being advertised on the television or the radio of some of the drugs and pay attention to what it says can possibly be a reaction or side effect for taking it. Weigh your options, do or don’t take the risk. I laugh at these commercials when I hear them. I talk to the T.V. and say, “oh yeah, I’m going take your medication because surely I want to risk, death, cancer or heart attack, blood clot, loss of limb, genital gangrene and even possibly a stroke.”

Do you really know what is made in the chemical mixture that you swallow every day? You can easily ask your doctor and if your doctor has no idea then do your own research. Call the company who makes it, research it on the internet and try to figure out what exactly you are putting into your body. Sometimes there are safer alternatives if you find that your medication has a slew of unhealthy ingredients. All you have to do is ask your health care provider what are your other options.

In no way shape or form am I evenly slightly suggesting, insisting or implying that you shouldn’t take your medications. Many people do need certain medications to keep them alive. I am not against or laying judgment either if you have to take medications.

The reason for this book that I have written is to enlighten you and help you become more aware. It’s completely up to you how you accept this information and how you go fourth with your life. I am sharing with you what I have learned. I was personally attacked for sharing this information about S.S.R.I. anti-depressant drugs in my Facebook group (which I have now closed because I simply needed a break after this incident). This person who I won’t name but you can clearly see their comment if you were to go look at my reviews on my 1st book. He went as far as to write a bad review on Amazon against one of my books. He never purchased a book-ever!  He was upset that I kicked him out of the Facebook group for him being rude, obnoxious and attacking people for their viewpoints. As soon as I accepted his request to become a member in our group he immediately started attacking and saying rude things to people in the group. As I look back on it, it makes me wonder if he just came into the group to be a disruptor. Some people are looking to upset others and they get a kick out of making other people’s life flustered. You know the old saying misery loves company. I also had to go as far as blocking him in all my social media accounts. Twitter, Instagram and fb because after he sent me several threatening private messages on Facebook with one in particular saying he was going to have fun with my little website. Shortly after that he figured out that all comments have to be approved by me on my website; Thehypothyroidismchick.com. The only way he could get back at me was to write a fake bad review on one of my books. His attack was completely unwarranted. Some people are just mean-evil souls that are trolling to upset others and that is how they get their rocks off. I accept honest feedback because it can make a person grow and learn. If he had actually purchased one of my books and had an issue with it then I would certainly be open to an adult conversation to learn why there was an issue and what I can do to improve it where I can better suit his needs but this clearly wasn’t the case as all.

You don’t have to agree with anything that I’ve written in this book. I do understand that everyone has opinions like we all have assholes and not all are pleasant, pretty or smell good. People can only understand from their perception and what has formed their thinking up until this point in their life. Along with the path they have walked up until this moment in their life. Most of us are on the same path but we are just at different parts on it. We are on different levels. Some are ahead and some are still trying to catch up. And then there are some who just prefer to keep their head in the sand. Which is perfectly fine as well? Our job as decent humans are to offer a helping hand to those who might have fallen off the path and who want to continue on the journey. We should lend out a helping hand, pull them back on the path, dust them off and offer encouragement for them to continue on their journey.

I hope for you, my friend, is that you will if you haven’t already to become your own health advocate, health investigator and health warrior! This is your journey to better health and finding the root cause of your hypothyroidism.

I know, there is so much information overload that most people are confused as to where to start. I believe you have already started by purchasing this book. You have decided that you weren’t going to stay sick and give this hypothyroidism disorder any more ownership of your health. I hope that you are starting to understand if you haven’t already that everything has a part to play in your body. I am on a path to help you, lead you and inform you through this terrible illness. Navigating Medicare should not be feel like a maze but it can be a complicated and confusing process. The amount of anecdotal information concerning choices for Medicare coverage can be difficult to filter.  I want to help you learn and understand the basic Medicare benefits from the federal government that you are entitled to and have earned as a worker here in the United States. Medicare is complex, and it can often feel overwhelming when you’re learning about Medicare and shopping around for coverage for the first time.  Medicare faces a number of important issues and challenges, perhaps none greater than providing affordable, quality care to an aging population while keeping the program financially secure for future generations. My goal is always the same with everyone or when I am simply writing an article for publication.  I want to provide helpful information about Medicare and protect you from unnecessary spending costs. Those already in Medicare or aging into Medicare should be treated with courtesy, dignity and respect at all times. Of course, I won’t be able to answer all the questions in one simple book with only 25 of the most commonly asked questions.

This book is meant to help you sift through some of the noise to get the information you need.

The best overall quick reference guide to understanding your Medicare options.
In this book, you will learn numerous need-to-know gems. Many people are unaware of the dangers that fall at their feet when they decide to retire. If you are not prepared, you can be penalized tremendously. It is shocking what may lay ahead after you have worked all these years paying your taxes as a good American citizen. Try not to be fooled or dismayed! As a licensed agent, I was absolutely shocked at what may lie ahead for our precious seniors. The snowballing effect of these penalties for Part A, Part B, and Part D can really add up to a lot of money. If you do not figure out a plan, it can consume an entire chunk of your social security benefit payment.

How to get out of survival mode Tip #4:

Avoiding Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors & Reducing Our Toxic Burden

Sneaky Thyroid Disruptors

There are many things in your life moving forward that need to be changed where you can begin to heal. Cleaning up your endocrine disruptors is only one part of the puzzle.

#4 Let’s identify and address those sneaky thyroid disruptors

It’s a combination of everything.

Endocrine disruptors are tricky chemicals that play havoc on our bodies. They increase production of certain hormones; decrease productions of others; intimation hormones; turning one hormone into another; interfering with hormones signaling; tells cells to die prematurely; competing with essential nutrients; binding to essential hormones and accumulating in the organs that produce hormones.

Our bodies are completely bombarded and overwhelmed with the constant exposed to toxic chemicals through the air that we breathe, the water we drink, the foods we eat, the personal care products and cleaning products we use.

Every Cell in your body responds to all these different circumstances. All of these things have a direct impact on your hormones and in return your hormones have a direct impact on every major system in your body. Not to mention that our body is lacking certain nutrients that heavily influence the function of every cell in our body.

Your body is an awesome design but there is a complex balance between everything. It’s like a domino. One thing in your body that is overworked can cause a major shift in how things operate. Sometimes we have to do a little pruning of the branches, in order for the tree to be healthy again. Again, there isn’t a one size fits all nor any magical pill to swallow when it comes to healing your hypothyroidism.

As we have all found out when your thyroid isn’t working properly it can wreak havoc on your life.  Your thyroid is responsible for so many things from regulating your metabolism, making energy, adjusting your mood, helping you sleep, it even helps aid in good digestion but you see this is where you must come into play.

Like everything else in life you get back what you give.

For example, imagine a car. Its parts are specialized and they each perform specific tasks, but yet they all depend on each other. The human body is the same way.  When one thing is being over worked or needs repair it puts a strain on the rest where they can’t perform their specific tasks as designed.

As mentioned earlier in this book:

Did you know that it takes 26 seconds for the chemicals to enter into your bloodstream? Most commercial personal care products are full of endocrine disrupting chemicals that wreak havoc on our hormones.  On average women use 9 personal care and cosmetic products per day and this can add up to a mixture up its about 126 different hormone disrupting chemicals and add this to the toxins you’re exposed to each day when you got out into the world.   Over 1000 of these ingredients have already been banned in Europe but not here in the United States where our FDA has only banned 11 of those ingredients in our personal care products.

These chemicals in our body products, our food, our beverages, the vaccines and the pharmaceuticals create a breeding ground for sickness. Have you heard of gene mutation? It’s when the cells are changed by chemicals they are either damaged, lost or copied. These processed foods that are full of man-made chemicals, fluoridated municipal tap water, genetically modified foods, refined oils, herbicides like roundup, Artificial sweeteners, Vaccines and the yearly flu shot – often contain mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde and MSG. Pharmaceutical medications and a lot of the Pharmaceutical medications are loaded with fluoride, OTC (over-the-counter) medications for colds, allergies, headaches, anesthetics, anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants, antifungals, cholesterol-lowering medications, chemotherapy, appetite suppressants, arthritis medications, steroids – often contain heavy metal toxins, artificial sweeteners and toxic industrial-based food dyes. Let’s not forget to mention the over use of antibiotics, antacids, aspirin, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) which completely change the environment in our gut.

So may products in the environment are laced with chemicals that are known to be endocrine disrupting, which means that they can block or mimic the natural hormones.

From the Author: New Book: The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol:  Culprits, Causes, Exposure and Genetic Disposition

Culprits, Causes, Exposure and Genetic Disposition

People being sick is big business.

Create a problem.

Sell the cure.

Another money making machine is born.

As consumers, we put our trust in the research and development of scientific studies, The FDA and The CDC. Drug store chains have quota’s to meet and even some of our Doctors get yearly bonus’s. Little do we do that behind closed doors corporations often pay scientists and these companies to support their product for profit. Some Politicians seem to have a revolving door between the private and public sector. The synthetic chemicals we face every day that is in our food, our water, and the air that we breathe. I’m sure this may be a hard pill to swallow that doctors, pharmaceuticals companies, research papers written by scientists and our very own FDA and CDC could be corrupt. Herbert Leonard Ley Jr. (September 7, 1923 – July 22, 2001) was an American physician, Harvard Professor and the 10th Commissioner and head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated,” What the FDA is doing and what we the public think they are doing is as different as night and day.” You can listen to a drug commercial and they mention a ton of side effects but still offer you the medication. This is being done right in front of our faces, openly and it seems we have accepted being treated like lab rats as the new normal.

Did you know that products we use every day may contain toxic chemicals and has been linked to women’s health issues?

There are hidden endocrine disruptors and very tricky chemicals that play havoc on our bodies. “We are all routinely exposed to endocrine disruptors, and this has the potential to significantly harm the health of our youth,” said Renee Sharp, EWG’s director of research. “It’s important to do what we can to avoid them, but at the same time we can’t shop our way out of the problem”. We need to have a real chemical policy reform.” The longer the length of ingredients on your food label means how much unhealthier it is for you to consume. When an item contains a host of ingredients that most likely you can’t even pronounce or remember to spell you can bet your lucky dollar that the natural nutrients are long gone. These highly processed frank n foods are very difficult for the body to break down and some of the chemicals will become stored in your body.

We have pesticides, herbicides, GMOs in our food, fluoride and chlorine and trace pharmaceutical residue in our water supplies, methane, carbon monoxide and industrial air pollutants and the toxic chemicals that is in our everyday household products.

No wonder our bodies are completely bombarded and overwhelmed with the constant exposed to toxic chemicals through the air that we breathe, the water we drink, the foods we eat, the personal care products and cleaning products we use.

Did you know that it takes 26 seconds for the chemicals to enter into your bloodstream? Most commercial personal care products are full of endocrine disrupting chemicals that wreak havoc on our hormones. On average women use 9 personal care and cosmetic products per day. This mixture can add up to a combination of 126 different hormone disrupting chemicals. Next add this to the toxins you’re exposed to each day when you got out into the world. Over 1000 of these ingredients have already been banned in Europe but not here in the United States where our FDA has only banned 11 of those ingredients in our personal care products.

What if I told you that most diseases have an underlying ROOT cause? That YOU aren’t some random number picked by nature to have an Autoimmune Disorder, Hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, Cancer, high blood pressure or Alzheimer’s. There is a link between the changing human–nature relationship and its impact on people’s health. Think of your genes & nature as a computer program.

What is programmed; is what is created and filtered out.

If you are feeding your body and bombarding it with trash? Trash in equals trash out!

Based on the World Health Organization’s definition. “Combining these concepts, the human–nature relationship and its impact on human’s health are then explored through a developing conceptual model”.

What is being said is our body is heavily influenced by the world around us.

(It is a combination of everything.)

Our environment we live in, the foods we consume, our daily movement, our mental health (stress) and what was passed down from us from both parents.

Have you ever said something or looked into the mirror and felt as if you were turning into your mother or your father? Perhaps you noticed a certain expression in the mirror, a side snap of a photo or maybe you heard yourself saying something you swore you’d never say to your kids.

Don’t worry although we do inherit both genetic weaknesses from both of our parents and you do inherit your mother’s gut and lymphatic systems health that is only one part of the equation.

Your medical future isn’t all predetermined by your genes. “You may be born with a genetic predisposition to certain disorders, but that doesn’t mean you will absolutely develop them,” Hahn says. “It’s like a loaded gun. The genetic predisposition is the gun, and lifestyle factors can pull the trigger. Some of these things we can control, and some we can’t per Susan Hahn, MS, a genetic counselor and the assistant director of communications, compliance, and ethics at the University of Miami School of Medicine’s Hussman Institute for Human Genomics.

Although you inherited certain genes from both parents and your mothers gut health was passed down to you it doesn’t mean that is how your life has to be. You might have started life out with a 50% chance of developing what was passed down but NOTHING IS WRITTEN IN STONE.

Please read that again: NOTHING IS WRITTEN IN STONE

There is a sequence of small things in the generations passed down that happened, developed while you were in the womb, given during childbirth or over the course of your life.

(It is a combination of everything.)

Again, the environment we live in, the foods we consume, our daily movement, our mental health (stress) and what was passed down from us from both parents.

Perhaps you might not have ever thought to connect the dots to this approach about your health.

Would you believe me if I told you that you could possibly hold the key to the answer of your very own bad health?

Our health is a consequence of actions taken. It is a combination of sequences that has happened to your genetic make-up or just in your life to get you to this point. As our health goes, you would think that with all the technologies and advancements that we have today that it would be a cinch to diagnose and pretty straightforward to treat. Imagine the show the show Star trek: The Next Generation.  The doctor has a scanner that tells her exactly what is wrong with you & how to heal you. Each of us are unique individuals with different sensitivities. None of us has the same exact routine as far as what foods we eat, what chemicals we are exposed to, what stress levels we have and what medications we take but yet we all are similar when it comes to the routine protocols that we are given when we come down with an illness, disorder or disease.

(It is a combination of everything.)

** Again let me reintegrate the importance of this information**

Every Cell in your body responds to the foods you eat, the products you put on your body to the house hold chemicals that you purchase for your home. All of these things have a direct impact on your hormones and in return your hormones have a direct impact on every major system in your body. Not to mention that our body is lacking certain nutrients that heavily influence the function of every cell in our body.

We are creating a toxic shit storm within our very own bodies. The real reality is we are damaging our DNA and we are changing our genetic makeup for future generations. These chemicals in our body products, our food, our beverages, the vaccines and the pharmaceuticals create a breeding ground for sickness.

There was a study a few years back that said the umbilical cord of an average American baby has over 200 known chemicals in it. We know almost nothing about eighty percent of the common chemicals that are used daily in this country. Our children are being born toxic and we have no idea if these toxins are already doing some sort of damage their brains, their immune system, their reproductive system, and any other developing organs.

Are we unknowingly setting the future generations up for failure in the womb, even before birth?

As I’ve said previously; We do inherit our mother’s gut and lymphatic health system.

More scientists and researchers need to be concerned that many of these chemicals may be carcinogenic or wreak havoc with our hormones and our body’s regulating system.

Most products have a warning label that is typed in bold “Keep Out of Reach of Children”. As consumers, we believe that if our children don’t ingest these products they will not be harmed by them. This can be far from the truth. The truth isn’t being completed communicated nor the damage of the future being foreseen. Just take a moment and think about other common methods of exposure are through the skin and our respiratory tract. All of us including our children are often in contact with the chemical residues housecleaning products do leave behind, by crawling, lying and sitting on the freshly cleaned floor.

Scientists at Norway’s University of Bergen tracked 6,000 people, with an average age of 34 at the time of enrollment in the study, who used the cleaning products over a period of two decades, according to the research published in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

(Let’s talk about gene mutation again)

Have you heard of gene mutation? It’s when the cells are changed by chemicals they are either damaged, lost or copied. These processed foods that are full of man-made chemicals, fluoridated municipal tap water, genetically modified foods, refined oils, herbicides like roundup, Artificial sweeteners, Vaccines and the yearly flu shot – often contain mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde and MSG, Pharmaceutical medications and a lot of the Pharmaceutical medications are loaded with fluoride, OTC (over-the-counter) medications for colds, allergies, headaches and fever – often contain heavy metal toxins, artificial sweeteners and toxic industrial-based food dyes. Let’s not forget to mention the over use of antibiotics, antacids, aspirin, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) which completely change the environment in our gut.

It’s not enough to be aware of all the outdoor chemicals that we are exposed to everyday but inside our homes we have the power and the control. We have to be more aware about using chemical cleaners, paints, glues, body lotions, toothpastes, underarm deodorants, hair products and pesticides. Instead start to begin to use products that don’t pollute our very own bodies.

We must do our own research, make our own products or be a smarter shopper and start reading labels. I can’t stress this enough. We have to get back to the basics.  We must take a stand for our health.

The commercial products that are laced with hidden, unknown and harmful body damaging ingredients.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 60 percent of herbicides, 90 percent of fungicides, and 30 percent of insecticides to be carcinogenic, and most are damaging to your nervous system as well. In fact, these powerful and dangerous chemicals have been linked to numerous health problems such as:

Neurotoxicity and Parkinson’s disease

Disruption of your endocrine system

Carcinogenicity

Immune system suppression

Miscarriages, male infertility and reduced reproductive function

This information should make you rethink when you are considering whether to buy local, organic vegetables or not.

Our bodies have no way of adapting to these GMO and food like substances that we’ve been consuming. Every cell in your body is wrapped in a membrane of half fat and half protein. If you are constantly feeding these cells unnatural fatty acids, that membrane cannot function like it is designed to do and disease starts at the cellular level.

What if you were born with a disorder, disease or condition?

You see, disease just doesn’t happen. The average human is born healthy, but when a child has a condition that is present from birth, it is called a congenital disorder. Congenital disorders can be inherited from the genes, exposure to chemicals while in the womb (smoking, environmental toxins, medications, alcohol, etc.)  and a problem with the genes that has been passed down, or a combination of these things. These factors and their impact on a child’s health and development can vary from mild to severe.  A person can be born with a gene mutation passed down from their parents or from generations passed that the genes may be lurking, waiting to awaken in the right environment. Genes can be either dominant or recessive.  Researchers have identified more than 4,000 diseases that are caused by mutations. But having a genetic mutation that may cause a disease or condition doesn’t always mean that a person will actually develop that disease or condition. They can be carriers of this disease or condition and pass it down to the next generation. This is very unfortunate but it does happen.

I was born with a club foot, birthmarks, freckles, blonde hair, blue/green eyes and my hair didn’t start growing until after I was two years of age. This was what the genetic gene pool from my parent’s that swirled like a cup of soup and decided to design me. My mother smoked, had high blood pressure, was in contact with chemicals and on certain prescribed medications for emotional issues. My father well, I never knew him just of him but that’s a different story in another book yet to be written. I do know she met him while living in Fayetteville, NC as she was still married to my older half-brother’s father although they were separated. This certainly sounds like a Maury Povick episode but no one has time to be embarrassed on national TV by my parent’s promiscuous ways. Only personally to all that is reading these words.

Think of your genes as a blueprint for your body.

If there’s a change to these instructions, it can sometimes increase your odds for developing diseases.

Therefore, we must be more aware of the foods we eat and the drinks we drink, the medications we take, the chemicals we allow ourselves to interact with which also includes our body, our home (house cleaners, weed killer, etc.) and environmental agents plus our overall mental wellbeing.

It is a combination of everything.

Thehypothyroidismchick.com determines coverage based on relevance, clinical significance, and editorial integrity. We give no priority to commercial considerations, and will always clearly distinguish between factual content, commentary, and opinions to avoid misleading readers with institutional propaganda. and speculation.

There is a war raging against humanity and our earth.  We have been passively indoctrinated and so utterly pre-programmed that we do not ask the questions that need to ask. We have laid our trust completely in those in power or someone with a title behind their name. People conditioned blindly believing in things simply because enough people assured us it was true. Infectious diseases have been irradiated but chronic diseases are the new black plague of our modern time. This book is profoundly personal as it represents a mission brimming with meaning.  As I reflect on extraordinary truths about our nation’s health history, current, and future, I also offer you wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. We must stop the atrocities if we want to become a healthier nation in the future. We must stop the atrocities if we want the human race to survive. Please follow along with me on this journey of discovery as I share with you my brush of madness with exquisite clarity. Luckily, I was never a quick fix-it junkie where I said no to many suggestions from board certified or certifiable doctors because I felt it in my soul that it was merely a banaide being placed on my issues. The names of certain doctors have been changed because frankly, I don’t want to be sued for proven their lack in their field.

Hippocrates was right when he said: Let they food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.

From the Author: New Book: The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol:  Natural vs. Synthetic Vitamins – What’s the Big Difference?

Natural vs. Synthetic Vitamins – What’s the Big Difference?

Our food is getting less and less nutritious. Fields that grow our foods are depleted by overuse. Pesticides limit the action of beneficial microbes in the soil that help plants draw in nutrients. Fertilizers focus on certain key chemicals and don’t take into account all the trace minerals, organic components, or beneficial microbes that go into good nutrition. Genetically modified foods have made their way into our food supply when we don’t know how they may affect us in the long term.

Our food is refined and processed where it will have a longer shelf life because its less expensive to make, more convenient, tastes better, and is even made to be more addictive. Companies have stripped out and destroyed vital nutrients as they are processed.  Much of the food we find in grocery stores outside the produce section barely resembles what humanity has been eating for thousands of years. There’s no wonder we have so many auto-immune disorders, food allergies, and the growing epidemics of obesity. Our bodies don’t know what we’re ingesting, they aren’t finding the nutrients they need, and they’re begging for us to eat more and more so we might manage to give ourselves what we’re missing.

We all know we need a steady supply of nutrients from our food sources where our bodies can function properly. Scientists and food companies create cheap vitamins in labs. The problem is these synthetic vitamins are not what our bodies are looking for either.

Almost all multivitamins are from synthetics. The same goes for fortified foods. There’s a good reason for this. Synthetic vitamins are cheaper to make and usually more stable. This means they can last on shelves for months or years, be added to foods in high doses, and create small dense tablets packed with insane amounts of every type of vitamin. These vitamins are allowed to call themselves “natural” even when they are actually synthetic because scientists say the synthetics are virtually identical to the ones found in food. Which is far from the truth.

We know that vitamins and minerals are essential for life, and vitamin deficiencies can definitely hurt you. Always read your labels and stay clear of supplements that contain artificial colorings, sodium benzoate, propylene glycol, aluminum silicate and High fructose corn syrup.

4.-Food Sensitivity Test:

 This is a must.

Undiagnosed food sensitivities are very common and sometimes difficult to diagnose.

If you have a food sensitivity and are unaware that you do eating these certain foods will cause inflammation within your body, become a burden on the IMMUNE SYSTEM and is difficult for your digestive tract to break them down.

Inflammation can stall your healing efforts especially when your immune system is having to concentrate on responding to these food invaders by creating specific disease-fighting antibodies (called immunoglobulin E or IgE).

MRT blood work can tell you what foods if any that your body may be fighting as though they were poison and causing major inflammation. MRT means Mediator Release Test. It’s for food sensitivity, the single common component of diet-induced inflammatory reactions is proinflammatory and proalgesic mediator release from white cells.

It turns out that there were MANY foods that tested bad for me.

We are all biochemically wired different and we won’t all have the same inflammation triggers. Most people are unaware that certain foods are actually working against their bodies. You see, if you are allergic to certain foods it will involve your immune system. The immune system controls how your body defends itself. Your body sees inflammatory foods as invaders and will kick in your autoimmunity responses when you ingest that certain food.

There is so much confusion to which is the best diet for hypothyroidism but the REAL truth is the foods we eat have a major impact on our lives. It affects your gut health along with decreasing or increasing inflammation within your body. There are foods that will do more harm than good to your thyroid even if you DON’T have a food intolerance to them and I will discuss it later in this book. We must begin to eat to cater to healing our thyroid, healing our bodies and avoid those foods that hinder both.

Food allergies verses food sensitivities are two very different things.

A food allergy triggers an extreme and potentially life-threatening reaction, known as an IgE-mediated immune response, whenever you are exposed to a certain type of food or foods.

Most allergic reactions happen within minutes and can range from mild—think hives or stomach cramping—to severe, such as anaphylaxis, which can impair your breathing, cause a dramatic drop in blood pressure, and affect your heart rate.  Due to the severity of food allergies, most people already know but there is that small percentage who don’t.

A food sensitivity triggers a digestive system response rather than an immune system. Food irritates a person’s digestive system or when a person is unable to properly digest, or break down, the food.

It can take up to 72 hours for any symptoms of a food sensitivity to present. The issue with a food sensitivity is by the time the delayed response happens you have probably already ate a wide range of foods in the time it takes for symptoms to appear and this makes it more difficult to pin point a pattern between the specific foods you eat.

This is also why I suggest that you should keep a food journal.

5.-Lipid panel. This test looks at the lipids, or fats, in your blood.

People with hypothyroidism may have elevated cholesterol levels. The research has associated higher levels with heart disease but when we are “artificially” lowering the levels with statin drugs we aren’t fixing the root of the issue. Please do your research. Statin drugs do more harm than good and they do have an anti-inflammatory side effect that is why people do see very slight drop in heart attack rates (about 1%). Just think if a person were to start eating right and concentrate on lowering their inflammation what could happen naturally?

Prescription medications and medical errors are in the top 3 leading cause of death in the US.

6.-Total cholesterols, which includes your good HDL cholesterol, should be below 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) and LDL cholesterol below 130 mg/dL. If your cholesterol is high when you start thyroid treatment, your doctor might test again after thyroid hormone levels stabilize.

“A lot of patients with high cholesterol can have their cholesterol reduced just by treating their thyroid,” says David Borenstein, MD, an integrative medicine physician in private practice at Manhattan Integrative Medicine in New York City.

7.-A full heavy metal test panel.

Your doctor CAN test your blood, urine, and hair to measure metals toxicity.

If you have heavy metals in your body that can block iodine uptake and halt the conversion from T4-T3. Heavy metals build up in your body over time because your body doesn’t know how to get rid of it. A heavy metal build can lead to your body slowly breaking down and allowing certain sicknesses to start to develop.  If you find out that you have a heavy metal buildup in your body you can start including foods that naturally help to detoxify your body from a heavy metal buildup. For example, you can begin with adding some cilantro to a smoothie, drink some lemon water and decaffeinated green tea. There are several other natural remedies that are easily accessible to start adding to your daily routine if you find this to be true for you. I have written a blog that you can find @ Thehypothyroidismchick.com website that goes into detail about How to detox from a heavy metal buildup.

8.- Check for celiac disease with a celiac panel.

Celiac disease is a lifelong serious medical condition that has no none cure. Eating gluten will trigger an immune response in the body, causing the immune system to attack the small intestine in response when gluten is consumed. It also causes inflammation and damage to the small intestine.

If left untreated, celiac disease can result in many adverse side effects, including digestive issues, nutritional deficiencies, weight loss and tiredness.

We cover a wide range of stories, but ultimately we are driven by two core values: first, to contribute to our readers’ understanding of what is a very complex and constantly changing field of information, and second, to keep in mind the ultimate “smell test” — we want our stories to be the kind of things you talk about at a bar with your friends.

I hope my voice and advocacy will continue to help lead the way and this book will make changes for current and future generations to come. No, I simply do not have all the answers but I have written plenty in this book to make you start questioning EVERYTHING.

From the Author: New Book: The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol:  How to get out of survival mode Tip #2

How to get out of survival mode Tip #2

Having the proper tests performed:

I understand not everyone has health insurance nor can everyone manage the extra cost that it may take to see a knowledgeable holistic health practitioner or one might not even be in your area locally.  Therefore, the information within the pages of this book can help guide you. Don’t worry you did not purchase another “quick fit it “book nor a book that is suggesting you buy “certain” products.

Roll your sleeves up, Sweet Cheeks, because you’ve got some work to do.

In order to start fighting hypothyroidism head on you need to know what you’re working with when it comes to your body. Where it is lacking, what are its strengths and the steps you need to take to begin the healing process.

This is just a basic run down of tests that need to be performed. If you “ARE” working with a Skilled Knowledgeable Holistic Health Practitioner they will know exactly what tests to run to begin figuring out what if any health issues you may have, how to treat it and where to start you on the road to wellness.  Again, if you aren’t working with one then this book will help to certainly guide you but you have to do the work.

You see it is very important to know if your body is lacking because for example if your iron, ferritin, Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 are too low, your body may have trouble with absorbing and utilizing the thyroid hormone replacement pill that you may be taking daily. At the present moment I am no longer on any medications for my thyroid because I have healed my Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism naturally. I have learned how to read my blood work, pay attention to the signals that my body gives me and most importantly LISTEN to my body. From all of this I can adjust what I need to fine-tune myself. There are also other daily habits and techniques that I have developed over time and learned that are written within the pages of this book for you to discover and become enlightened.

I know, the reason why you purchased this book is because you have the courage, strength and desire to start making a difference in your own health. Thank you for making that leap for bettering your health.

What tests should I have run for my thyroid?

A full thyroid panel for hypothyroidism should at least include these key thyroid lab tests:

-TSH

-Free T4

-Free T3

-Reverse T3

-Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies-Hashimoto’s

-Thyroglobulin Antibodies- Hashimoto’s

-TSI & TRAb for Graves; You can have antibodies for both illnesses

A Thyroid DNA Panel that includes DIO2

Listen TSH alone does not give a full picture of thyroid health.

Normal Ranges for you blood work

-TSH- (range .034 – 4.82)

-Free- T4 (range 0.59 – 1.17)

-Total -T4 (range 4.5 – 12.0)

-Total- T3 (range 71 – 180)

These are additional tests that your doctor may want to run. These other tests may be vital to predetermining how to start your healing process. I shall repeat again that you are not sitting in front of me with the history of your health chart, nor do I have a recent rundown of your blood work or can I ask you many, many other vital important questions. For example: your medical history, your recent and past blood work, your daily activities, your food journal, your daily stress factors, your exercise habits, your sleep patterns or what chemical toxins that you allow in your life. (example: shampoo’s, lotions, deodorants, cleaning supplies, other medications, etc.) There are so many other vital questions too that I would ask you to help you begin your healing journey if you were working with me or a knowledgeable holistic health practitioner.

2.- Four iron labs: Ferritin, % Saturation, TIBC and serum iron (sometimes the test will just say Iron, or total iron).

*A high ferritin can also point to inflammation and is often elevated with people who have hypothyroidism. It is suggested that you should not take your iron supplement for up to five days because this will give you a clearer picture of what your body is holding onto but again I would advise you to get your doctors approval beforehand.

Lower than normal hemoglobin levels indicate anemia. The normal hemoglobin range is generally defined as 13.5 to 17.5 grams (g) of hemoglobin per deciliter (dL) of blood for men and 12.0 to 15.5 g/dL for women. The normal ranges for children vary depending on the child’s age and sex. Ferritin.

3.-A full vitamin and mineral MOT

Believe it or not something a simple a mineral or vitamin deficiency can have a major impact on your life.

Nutrient deficiencies are a very common and often over looked. Your thyroid is dependent upon many different vitamins and minerals that work together for it to properly function. Maintaining adequate levels of protein, vitamin D, vitamin A, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), cobalamin (B12), iodine, selenium, iron, zinc, Omega-3 fats, vitamin C, and magnesium are all important nutrients when it comes to helping your thyroid work properly or it can initiate thyroid dysfunction.

*The body also depends heavily on micronutrients like calcium, vitamin B12, magnesium, Vitamin D, potassium and omega 3s.

I promise you the answer to this test is well worth knowing.

When your body has the correct normal levels of vitamins and minerals your metabolism will also work like it should.

Below are two examples of a very important vitamin and a very important mineral.

According to a November 2017 study conducted at the University of Birmingham in the U.K., maintaining sufficient vitamin D intake may help prevent or delay the onset of inflammatory health conditions.

Vitamin D3 (25-hydroxyvitamin D lab test)

Vitamin D (25 (OH)D) is usually measured on a scale of 30” 100 ng/ml. Below 30 is often considered deficient.

Vitamin D is important to the immune system and without adequate amount of vitamin d it blocks the receptors that tell your thyroid to process properly.

Vitamin D deficiency has been found to be more common among people with Hashimoto’s, [an autoimmune disorder related to hypothyroidism]

*Low vitamin D also increases TSH levels, people who were deficient in vitamin D were much more likely to have TPO-Ab positive tests, [which is related to having Hashimoto’s- an autoimmune disorder related to hypothyroidism].

Extremely fatigued? Selenium. This trace mineral, although rare, has been linked to impaired immune function, recurrent miscarriages, hypothyroidism and extreme fatigue.

Magnesium is necessary for metabolizing estrogen in the liver. Magnesium is a mineral that plays an important part in our health and well-being. It’s one of the forgotten minerals and it’s vital for many processes within the body. Magnesium helps to keep the nervous system healthy and to calm your nerves when you are stressed. In fact, did you know that magnesium is the first mineral depleted when you are stressed? So if you have any type of stress in your life magnesium is the first mineral that goes out the window. Magnesium is also an important mineral co-factor for enzymes that have biochemical reactions in the body. In other words, it plays a large role in digestive system health as it helps enzymes do their job as well as to loosen the body to relax and ease to support the metabolic processes.

Many of us are deficient in magnesium and we don’t even know it. Magnesium is the second most abundant element in our cells, helps to regulate our bodies 325 enzymes, and plays an important role in organizing many bodily functions, like muscle control, electrical impulses, energy production, and the elimination of harmful toxins. According to the National Academy of Sciences, American’s magnesium deficiency helps to account for high rates of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, arthritis and joint pain, digestive maladies, stress-related illnesses, chronic fatigue and a number of other ailments. Epsom salt is rich in magnesium and sulfate in which are easily absorbed through the skin. Per http://www.uhichicago.com Sulfates help to form brain tissue, joint proteins and the proteins that line the walls of the digestive tract. Sulfates also help detoxify the body of medicines and environmental contaminants. The Epsom Salt Industry Council has listed many reasons why we should take an Epsom bath three times a week. Here are some other health benefits and different recipes for a relaxing, unwinding, and “wash the day off” detox bath. Be creative; find the scents that you like and mix your very special detox bath blends. Improves heart and circulatory health, reducing irregular heartbeats, preventing hardening of the arteries, reducing blood clots and lowering your blood pressure. Improves ability for the body to use insulin, reducing the incidence or severity of diabetes. Flushes toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain, and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances. Improves nerve function by electrolyte regulation. Also, calcium is the main conductor for electrical current in the body, and magnesium is necessary to maintain proper calcium levels in the blood. Relieves stress. Reduces inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps. Improves oxygen use. Improves absorption of nutrients. Prevents or eases of migraine headaches.

Calming Magnesium Body Butter

My homemade magnesium body butter will help replace the magnesium that our bodies need to thrive to survive.  I always try to apply a little to my feet and shoulders before bed. This helps me relax and also get a fantastic night’s sleep.  It’s pretty easy to make and the benefits are overwhelming. Magnesium deficiency is very common and it mimics other common symptoms and many other conditions like, being tired and felling run down, not sleeping well, getting headaches, gut issues, and even feeling stressed and anxious. Here is a list of things that can lower our magnesium levels:

    Too much caffeine

    Processed food and Sugar

    Too much stress

    Poor sleep habits

Calming Magnesium Body Butter

    1/2 cup cocoa butter

1/2 cup of coconut oil and melt

    1/4 cup magnesium oil

Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil

Add 10 drops cedar wood essential oil

Add 10 drops frankincense essential oil

Place a heat-safe glass measuring cup/bowl inside a pot that has 1-2 inches of simmering water over medium heat. Add the cocoa butter and melt it in your double boiler until it’s completely melted.

Remove the cocoa butter from heat, and add 1/2 cup extra virgin coconut oil to the melted cocoa butter and stir until completely the coconut oil has melted. Next add 1/4 cup magnesium oil to the mixture and combine. Place the mixture in the refrigerator to cool for about 30-60 minutes (until it is cooled completely). After the mixture has completely cooled and became a solid. Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip it.  Start on low and increase speed slowly.  Whip for about 3-5 minutes. Next add the 10 drops each of lavender essential oil, the 10 drops of cedar wood essential oil, and the 10 drops of frankincense essential oil.  Scrape down the sides of the bowl and continue whipping for another 5 minutes or so, until the magnesium body butter is light and fluffy.  The color of the magnesium body butter will change from yellow to a pale ivory and almost white color. Lastly put the magnesium body butter into mason jars and seal tightly with a lid. Make sure to label and date the top of the lid. This recipe makes enough for two 4 oz. glass jars.

What is the slim and sassy essential oil blend? It’s a blend of grapefruit, lemon, peppermint, ginger, and cinnamon. This metabolic blend can be used for weight loss, increased energy, increased metabolism, appetite suppression, and fighting those nasty, overwhelming cravings. You can purchase this essential oil pretty much anywhere or go to my blog website http://atomic-temporary-94316140.wpcomstaging.com/ and follow me on twitter @thyroidismchick.

What to do if I have a mineral or vitamin deficiency?

First of all, let me say that I support you changing your food patterns and getting what your body is lacking through the consumption of whole organic foods if at all possible. I am in no way trying to “sell” you any vitamin supplements or as I like to call some vitamins, “expensive urine” but if for some reason, if you can’t get what you need through organic whole foods then I want you to be smart about what you are swallowing and not wasting your money on what will ultimately turn into “expensive urine”.

This is really a difficult topic to cover because we are all ‘again” not created the same.

In order to get the correct daily dosage is not like as simple as putting gas in your tank. You just simply can’t swallow a pill and call it a day. A recommendation is just that a recommendation. What you may need from the absorption rates, elimination rates, assessing what the vitamin or mineral even does in your body can mean something totally different to you verses the next person that is given the same recommendation. It seems we may be getting just enough to survive but it’s not unreasonable to get enough to thrive! We must pay attention to our diet and blood work, add extra to what we need and pay major attention to what we are lacking.

For example, if you are low on Vitamin D.

The Reference Daily Intake (RDI) is 600 IU of vitamin D per day from foods and closer to 1,000 IU per day from sunlight.

There are three ways to get vitamin D. 1. The most natural way would be exposing your bare skin to sunlight like your arms, legs and face for 20 minutes (No, you do NOT need sunscreen. I absolutely urge you to look at your sunscreen ingredients and see how harmful the ingredients are actually. There are plenty of natural way to make sunscreen or several companies who make great organic sunscreen. I prefer to just apply raw, unrefined, organic coconut oil) 2. Taking a quality vitamin D3 supplement. 3. Eating foods that are rich in vitamin D such as

Cod liver oil — 1 teaspoon has 453 IU of vitamin D

Wild Alaskan Salmon — 3 ounces has 447 IU

Tuna — 3 ounces has 154 IU

Sardines — 2 fillets have 46 IU

Pasture Raised Eggs — 1 large egg has 41 IU

Mushrooms — 1 cup has 2 IU

(Mushrooms are a nightshade. In this book, I urge you to avoid nightshades but I only showed this as an example of foods that are high in vitamin D. Later in the book, I will go into more detail about the foods that will cater to healing your thyroid along with recipes)

Not all vitamins and mineral supplements are created equal.

This is what I mean when I say. “expensive urine”.

I am sure there are many companies who sell quality vitamins but I’ve found that Garden of Life Multivitamin for Women – Vitamin Code Women’s Raw Whole Food Vitamin Supplement with Probiotics work best for me because a women’s body is very complex. The company promises that this vitamin has no fillers or binders, it’s made from raw whole foods and nothing synthetic (made from fake chemicals acting like the real thing). This multivitamin also has live probiotics and enzymes plus antioxidants. It is also gluten and dairy free which are issues with people with hypothyroidism and food intolerances.

This vitamin hits all areas of my female body.  It’s a comprehensive vitamin for breast health, reproductive health, bone strength, skin health, heart health, and digestive support.

Yes, I may sound as if I am advertising for them but I can assure you I am not and I get no kickbacks if you decide to purchase the same brand that I use. I am only sharing with you what I use and why I use it. How would they even know that you purchased their product because I wrote it in my book? There is no way that this company even knows that am on this planet.

When you are searching for a quality vitamin and mineral supplement to take please make sure it’s not filled with fake crap and has no hidden fillers, binders, gluten, soy lecithin, palm oil, basically read the fine print and make sure there are no hidden added extra things. Also, make sure it has everything your body needs for that extra support that you might not be getting with your food intake. I also like to read the reviews that other people have written about the product that tends to help me make my decision as well.

Whatever your body is lacking you can always google, if you don’t have access to the internet at home, you can freely go to the nearest library and do a little research to see what you need to do the adjustments to whatever you are lacking and begin to build it back up again. There is no reason for you not to have access to the most powerful information tool created in the history of mankind. I am referring to the internet along with search engine tools such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Internet Archive, Baidu, Ask.com, Yandex.ru and DuckDuckGo.

I also found it beneficial for me to fast before my blood work. I wouldn’t have anything to eat or drink other than water for 8 to 10 hours before my test. Fasting helps ensure that the blood test records an accurate measurement of many things. If I was checking to see if I had a vitamin or mineral deficiency. I also would skip out on taking any mineral/vitamins supplements for several days so my body could be accurately measured to what it is holding on too or what it is truly lacking.

You see my friend, you certainly don’t want your blood work test results could come back flawed, leading to the wrong diagnosis and treatment.

*** Always check with your Primary Care Physician for approval to fast prior to fasting for your blood work***

Here is a little piece that I wrote in my book: Awareness has Magic that I am sharing with you.

The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol: How I beat Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s using clean Keto principles and Holistic functional Medicine

BONUS ADD-ON **** Hilarious Jokes for the Elderly

Telling jokes to friends is a great way to get a laugh if the joke is funny enough and reaches the right audience. I certainly hope these jokes tickle your funny bones because the experience of aging is universal.

How to get out of survival mode Tip #1

Look into getting a Holistic Health Practitioner:

The very first thing that you need to do is look into getting a knowledgeable certified holistic health practitioner!

You are not sitting in front of me with the history of your health chart, nor do I have a recent rundown of your blood work or can I ask you many, many other vital important questions. This is why I stress for you to look into working with a skilled knowledgeable holistic health practitioner.

The main reason why you should work with a knowledgeable holistic health practitioner is its patient-centered medical holistic healing at its best. Unfortunately, when it comes to your body there isn’t a one size fits all approach to dealing with it and often times you are left still searching for the answers to your symptoms when all you want is your zest for life back. We seriously need to realize that conventional care isn’t getting us what we need nor healing our body.

A knowledgeable health practitioner will care for you as an individual as they won’t look at your body as a whole they will treat each individual body symptom, imbalance and dysfunction. They will take into consideration the whole person, including physical, mental and spiritual aspects, when treating a health condition or promoting wellness.  I want you to understand that you are made up of interdependent parts and if one part is not working properly, all the other parts can be affected.  A knowledgeable health practitioner certainly moves from the confusion of the “one size fits all treatment” approach that we know isn’t working to the one that will cater to what your body needs.  Let’s not forget that each of us is a unique case and unless you get a proper thorough clinical evaluation, trying to figure what medical advise you need online is dubious at best.

When you are searching for a knowledgeable holistic health practitioner– Always read the online reviews and see if you can do a free 1st time meeting!! If you are in any local Facebook groups- ask your fellow Facebook friends who do, they see and why do they like them and have they done a good job at treating their ailments.

Don’t worry by the end of the book you will have a new perspective, understanding of your health and a wealth of information to begin on your new journey.

The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol: How I beat Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s using clean Keto principles and Holistic functional Medicine

BONUS ADD-ON **** Hilarious Jokes for the Elderly

Telling jokes to friends is a great way to get a laugh if the joke is funny enough and reaches the right audience. I certainly hope these jokes tickle your funny bones because the experience of aging is universal.

From the Author: New Book: The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol

From the Author:

This handbook isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s hard work and you have to be willing to give up the things that have made you sick along with a drastic lifestyle change.

My name is A.L. Childers, and I am an internationally recognized published author, blogger and a Holistic Health Coach with many of hours of clinical experience in this field. I also dabble in freelance journalism and I have over a decade of experience in research and editorial writing. This journey that I’ve traveled on has led me to become a healer and more spiritually-enlightened. I wholeheartedly take a holistic approach to my body, mind and soul. I believe what you put out into the world, it comes back to you good or bad and we make our very own health more complicated than it should be. People have gotten lost in the basic function of how their bodies work. Our cells are cities within themselves and each have their own designed function along with being their very own conscious entities. As humans, we are each on a unique path to find that inner peace. Everything in life is a modest complication of many truths.

I’m was allergic to myself, in theory. Being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and later Hashimoto’s hasn’t been any walk in the park. My entire body is at the mercy of my thyroid.  My body’s immune system was attacking my thyroid gland – as if it was foreign tissue and my immune systems ultimate goal is to eventually, completely destroy my thyroid gland.

After being diagnosed with hypothyroidism over 25 years ago. I knew there was something more than just being labeled with a medical condition and taking a daily pill. There wasn’t a lot of information on how to heal myself and I wasn’t okay with this. I was so hungry trying to find the answer where I could be able to feel real again and I became extremely desperate to get my life back after years of living with a chronic health condition.

My doctor did exactly as he was trained to do. He evaluated me with what I presented him, asked me a few questions in return, listened to my basic body functions and gave a solution to best heal the issue at hand but I needed more. I needed him to become a medical detective to look at all the clues that I presented him and for him to investigate through blood work, my medical history, my lifestyle, my food intolerances, my environment and my vitamin deficiencies. I really can’t be upset nor blame my doctor that the root of my health issues weren’t being addressed. He was doing exactly as he had been trained to do in his 12 plus years of medical schooling plus along with his hands on clinical experience and that was to treat the symptoms that I placed in front of him.

Doctors need to rethink how they approach treating our thyroid issues by:

Analyzing a patient’s medical history and recognizing if there is a problem, performing the correct tests, properly diagnosing and treating the causes of thyroid dysfunction, educating the patient by stressing the need for a lifestyle change, a hypothyroidism style healing diet, vitamin deficiencies, food allergens and adding supplements that they aren’t getting from the foods they are consuming. Also, prescribing the right thyroid hormone replacement and dosages specifically designed for that individual person. We are all unique. You see we each have a story and its completely different from the next person.

I learned that my doctor didn’t have a whole lot of training on nutrition nor the medications they were prescribing either.

Also, what “real” clinical trials the medications went though, the adverse reactions and how they evaluated the effectiveness to the human body. I also learned that most medications were designed to only treat the symptoms not to cure the issues at hand. My best bet was to learn nutrition, learn how my body works, teach myself about herbal medicine from the earth & other forms of natural medicine.

After being diagnosed, I started to read everything that was put out there, anything that would lead me to a topic about hypothyroidism. I would research that topic- if there were text books related to that topic- I would order them and based on reading that book it would lead to me to another book or another article or another research paper. What I have learned was really shocking.  There has been information out here for all of us to see.  Your body simply can’t heal itself when its full of inflammation, parasites, toxic chemicals, fake foods, heavy metals, pharmaceutical poisons and refined sugars. These things are meant to destroy your health not better it.

The science is out there everywhere. People are just choosing not to look at it or many who were like I was simply didn’t know they do have a choice.

You do have a choice.

I felt as if I had lost control over my body and my mental health as well. It seems that I had experienced every symptom from lack of energy, anxiety, weight gain, scary heart palpitations, brain fog and this was just to name a few. I couldn’t sleep and where the hell had my eye brows gone? My hair was falling out and the regrowth was thin. I was always constipated, my blood pressure started to increase, my fingertips would get cold and numb just out of the blue, my emotions were all over the place as if I was on an emotional roller coaster. I had aches and pains that it seemed hard to explain to my doctor and my doctor thought it was all in my head. Have you ever had a new car and you just made your very last car payment or the 36-month warranty had just expired and it seems things are starting to breakdown. The excitement of that last payment but yet the disappointed of no warranty left. I felt as if I was beginning to slowly die.

My doctor wanted to give me thyroid medication, antidepressants and pain medication. I was not depressed nor did I need to be placed on pain medication.

The simplest tasks seemed like the hardest on some days. I really didn’t realize or understand the whole life impact of my “new” condition, because as I started investigating, I then began to realize that all the wide ranging symptoms of hypothyroidism that were being brushed off by my doctor at the time as being part of everyday life, stress or getting older was something more dreadfully serious.

After being diagnosed, I was relieved and excited to finally have an answer, some kind of answer, to what was going on with my body but soon I was disappointed again only to find out that the thyroid medications that I thought was going bring me back to myself only fixed a few of my symptoms and I was still having to deal with a dozen more remaining issues. I was so tired of hearing that it was all in my head, give the medication time or let’s try a different strength or brand. I wanted to scream to the world and let everyone know that my quality of life had drastically been affected and there has to be answers. I decided to stand up and fight. Little did I know this was a fight for my life.

Somewhere, Someone, Anyone at this point, hello? Help me, I feel like I am drowning, slowly dying and the world just keeps turning. Why isn’t anyone listening to me?

My body’s check engine light apparently had been on for a while but it took becoming chronically ill to wake me up.

My quality of life has been affected.

Every Cell in my body responds to the foods that I eat, the products that I put on my body to the house hold chemicals that I purchase for my home. All of these things have a direct impact on my hormones and in return my hormones have a direct impact on every major system in my body. Not to mention that my body was lacking certain nutrients that heavily influenced the function of every cell in my body.

I’ve learned in my journey that organic, whole, nutrient rich food is medicine.

I really can’t say it any simpler than that.

These bad fats, sugars, processed salts and added chemicals in our fake overly processed foods were simply entertainment for my brain and unknowingly placed me into an addictive cycle. Food addiction is real and I was addicted to fake foods which were damaging my body.

There is a major disconnection between what we believe to be healthy foods and what research tells us is healthy. In fact, many of the health foods today that people go out of their way to eat daily are extremely thyroid suppressive and hopelessly inadequate. I started to become my very own health investigator. I started researching what I need to do to start addressing what the root cause is because that lead to me to this point in my life. I certainly wouldn’t take Motrin if I got a pebble stuck in my shoe? So, why am I going to take this new medication for my thyroid if I didn’t understand how I got here?

As I began researching, I soon discovered that hypothyroidism does has a root issue. I often ignored all the underlying causes of my hypothyroidism. What was I looking for? Like an onion, I needed to see it layer by layer. I started to do a little pruning of my branches, I wanted to be healthy again. My thyroid was being influenced by so many different things.

There isn’t a one-size-fits all with hypothyroidism or hashimoto’s.

You see, the main problem with hypothyroidism is that it’s a very tricky condition and complicated illness to manage. There are no one size fits all program when you are dealing with hypothyroidism.

Around 27 million Americans and 250 million people worldwide will be affected by low thyroid function or hypothyroidism. One in 8 women will struggle with a thyroid problem in her lifetime, and up to 90% of all thyroid problems are autoimmune in nature, the most common of which is Hashimoto’s. As diseases go, you would think that it would be a cinch to diagnose and pretty straightforward to treat. Many people don’t know that the most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (or autoimmune hypothyroidism), a form of thyroid inflammation caused by our own immune system.  Can you imagine? Our very own immune system has produced antibodies that attack its very own tissues.

The reason why “most doctors” don’t mention this is because it’s quite simple: IT DOESN’T AFFECT THEIR TREATMENT PLAN.   Most doctors run basic blood work and won’t even test for these antibodies. There are occasions where the insurance companies will not pay the extra cost for different tests. Imagine how different our medical system would be if all doctors were required to have an extreme health crisis before practicing medicine too. You know like wearing the show on the other foot? They know how it feels to be in that situation and they don’t want others to suffer along with knowing how to heal the person as a whole.

Most people don’t question their doctors and they think their doctors have their best interest at heart which isn’t always true.   There are some (not all) doctors who are greedy scam artists that take advantage of their patient’s vulnerabilities to make money by prescribing unneeded medications and procedures. I know we need our good, honest and hardworking doctors but in the same breath a patient cured is a customer lost.

(Let me also add: Please don’t ever let anyone make you feel inadequate or intimidated just because they have a title in front of or behind their name. Ask questions, demand answers and follow up with your very own research. You are your very own patient advocate!)

We still have those few doctors who aren’t afraid to fight against this and will do what is best for your health. Always ask questions and do your own research before you agree to a treatment plan and take medications. I am not saying don’t do treatment plans nor am I saying don’t take the medications prescribed. I am saying be wise. Doctors are not Gods although some do have a God-like complex. There are still many wonderfully trained and fantastic medical doctors, holistic health practitioners and neuropaths working hard every day to help us and show us how to heal with what we have presented them to work with. And also that sometimes, your doctor is so involved with treating another issue or diseases that it can make it difficult for them to even see your own symptoms for what they really are.

You have the ability to independently research every medication and the advice that your doctor offers you with the most powerful informational tool in the history of mankind that is right at your fingertips. The internet along with many great search engines where all you have to do is type in a question or a keyword and it will show you many things already being researched by people. There is absolutely no excuse to not educate ourselves. We also still have this ancient thing called a library that holds many wonderfully brilliant written books. We must use our own good judgment and do the research when it comes to our health.

Congress has something called The National Practitioner Data Bank which is a computer database run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that lists damaging information about United States physicians and other healthcare practitioners. Guess who owns this data base? Congress, Insurance companies and big pharma. We won’t even get into the topic of who owns most of our Congressmen and women. The National Practitioner Data Bank keep up with what doctors are prescribing, their action for treatment and what advice they give their patients. It’s really like some of our doctors are puppets and the insurance companies along with big pharma are the puppet masters disguised under the blanket of our very own Congress. If a doctor goes against slinging their medications or were to advice his patients to go a more natural alternative route; the recourse can be many unpleasant things. Slander, destroy their private practice, find something or someone to lie and use this against them aka blackmail or even as far as losing their medical license. Sure this data base is supposed to protect the people but it does more than that and has a sinister hidden agenda laying deep within its core. People in high places don’t want the truth to be told nor their bottom dollar impacted. The truth is bigger than all of us. We are easily disposable to those in power.

Traditional medicine treats autoimmune disorders with steroids and other methods that suppress the immune system.  We don’t need our immune system suppressed, we need it healed.

The number of people suffering from hypothyroidism continues to rise each year. Levothyroxine is the 4th highest selling drug in the U.S. THE 4TH HIGHEST SELLING DRUG!

Every Cell in your body responds to your thyroid hormones. These hormones have a direct impact on every major system in your body.

People are struggling with more chronic disease, chronic pain and are more obese than ever before in the history of America. We seriously need to realize that conventional care isn’t getting us what we need nor healed.

As consumers we put our trust in the research and development of scientific studies, The FDA and The CDC. Drug store chains have quota’s to meet and even some of our Doctors get yearly bonus’s to push certain medications. Little do we know that behind closed doors corporations often pay scientists and these companies to support their product for profit. Some Politicians seem to have a revolving door between the private and public sector. The synthetic chemicals we faced with every day that is in our food, water and the air is simply frightening.

Did you know that products we use every day may contain toxic chemicals and has been linked to women’s health issues? They are tricky hidden endocrine disruptors and are these very tricky chemicals play havoc on our bodies. “We are all routinely exposed to endocrine disruptors, and this has the potential to significantly harm the health of our youth,” said Renee Sharp, EWG’s director of research. “It’s important to do what we can do to avoid them, but at the same time we can’t shop our way out of the problem. We need to have a real chemical policy reform. “The longer the length of ingredients on your food or body product labels means how much unhealthier it is for you to consume or place on your skin. When an item contains a host of ingredients that most likely you can’t even pronounce or remember to spell you can bet your lucky dollar that the natural nutrients are long gone. These highly processed frank n foods or body products are very difficult for the body to break down and some of the chemicals will become stored in your body. Your body doesn’t know how to process it, so it gets stored.

No wonder our bodies are completely bombarded and overwhelmed with the constant exposed to toxic chemicals through the air that we breathe, the water we drink, the foods we eat, and the personal care products and cleaning products we use.

It’s not enough to be aware of all the outdoor chemicals that we are exposed to everyday but inside our homes we can have more power and control. Did you know that commercial products are laced with unknown and harmful body damaging ingredients? We have to be more aware about using chemical cleaners, paints, glues, body lotions, toothpastes, underarm deodorants, hair products and pesticides. Instead start using products that don’t pollute our very own bodies. We must do our own research, begin making our own products and become smarter shoppers by reading labels. I can’t stress this enough. Again, we must take a stand for our health.

Sometimes we have to do a little pruning of the branches, in order for the tree to be healthy again. A number of things can be the reason why you have hormonal imbalances, food intolerances, thyroid issues, adrenal fatigue, weight gain, insomnia, personality changes, leaky gut, depression, an autoimmune disorder, chronic pain, no metabolism and low sex drive, bloating, anxiety, menstrual problems and infertility. It starts with becoming aware and how your health can be influenced by all these different circumstances.

So, you see, my friends, this is how my quest began. I became my own patient advocate and started raising the bar on my thyroid care while helping others take back their lives from hypothyroidism, autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. I believe that knowledge is power. Long hours of research, where I have educated myself and started finding the answer to my health care needs. We each have the capability to heal ourselves. We can become stronger and more confident, especially in controlling our lives with natural solutions, instead of surrendering to life-altering chemicals that we are being bombarded with from every direction. I do believe in some situations there’s a time and place for pharmaceuticals, but it shouldn’t be our first answer, nor the only form of treatment. Wisdom is a wonderful thing to seek.  Every day we INDIVIDUALLY take different paths, come into contact with different chemicals and have different stressors in our lives. Every day we make choices that will impact our future positively or negatively.

As humans we are troubled by so many things. Sometimes, when I sit down to write, I have no idea what I am going to say. I start to begin anyways on a blank word document and eventually the words start following right out of my fingertips where it’s hard for me to keep up. As I am writing, I think about the women who will read my written work and become inspired, what has brought them to this point in their life and I often wonder how this will bless her and help her in her life. Honestly, everything that I write, I start out writing it for myself.

My new purpose is to empower people to embrace who they are, to add value to their life, to inspire them and to connect with those who are struggling with hypothyroidism, hashimoto’s or both. You need to realize that you have to invest in your health. You are worth investing money into yourself and take charge of your health. Will it “hurt” a little? You bet, but it will change your life. The choices you make every day has a direct impact on your life. I want you to learn the true meaning of being healthy and HELP give you the resources to where YOU become successful in your healing journey. You have to start to focus on healing your body naturally from the inside out.

I wish somebody had given me a step-by-step road-map guide back when I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism and then later with hashimoto’s. The solutions in many of my books have helped so many people. I am not promising to cure you either. You have to do the work. I’ve done my best to pull from other professionals in this field, as well as my own knowledge and clinical experience. I want to make it easy for you to find the answers quickly, all in the one place, because I’m all too familiar with that awful side effects of hypothyroidism. I certainly don’t want you to have to spend years finding solutions, like I did. I also want you to understand that there isn’t an easy “one pill” solution, but the “one pill” approach that our current medical system is using is NOT WORKING because the underlying cause for hypothyroidism is not being addressed.

Your body simply can’t heal itself when its full of inflammation, parasites, toxic chemicals, fake foods, heavy metals, pharmaceutical poisons and refined sugars. These things are meant to destroy your health not better it.

We need to change the way we eat. If we are what we eat, then what are you made of?  Food is also just one part of the equation. We need to change the chemicals we use on our bodies and change the chemicals we use in our homes. We have to get back to clean eating, non-toxic cleaning and advoiding chemically loaded body products.

Eat to feed your thyroid. Eat to feed your life. Eat to heal.

Either you are going to eat your food as medicine, otherwise you will need to eat your medicine as food.

Begin cleaning up your environment without adding unnecessary chemicals on your skin without endocrine disrupting products. Could it be that simple? I think so, YES! Chemicals, additives and GMO foods are added to most of all the foods that are readily and easily available on every supermarket shelves. We are so unaware of the things that are added to our foods like hormones, antibiotics, plastics, extra chemicals, addictive’s, cancer causing preservatives, dyes, coloring agents and why? Why would our FDA allow this to go on? To continue slowly poisoning us. Why do we trust the FDA and take a chance on our health, our livelihood and our future?

I’m not going to lie to you. Eating healthy is hard but it’s worth every mouthful! Reading labels, making your own cleaning products and body lotions is time consuming.

I know, there is so much information overload that most people are confused as to where to start.  You can start by taking ownership of your health. Everything has a part to play in your body. Everything has a job to do in your body.  I am on a path to help you, lead you and inform you through this time in your life. Being diagnosed with hypothyroidism isn’t just here take this pill and it will fix your issues. Hypothyroidism has a root cause. Once you start addressing the root of your problems then your body can start healing itself. Your body is an awesome design but there is a complex balance between everything.

Like anything else in life you get back what you give. This is the same for your body.

I want you to know that I see you reaching for the answers to your health. Trust me, I hear your cries and I’ve seen your tears. But, make sure you’re listening. Remember this is a journey and “You’ve got to go through something before you can understand something”.  “You’ve got to know where you been to understand where you are going”.  Are you following me? You may not understand it right now but it’s all a part of you understanding what it’s going to take to make YOU healthy. I can’t just place you there, but I can begin to guide you and you must be willing to go through the steps.

You have to start addressing what the root cause is of your health issues. I say this again, my friend, “Would you take Motrin if you got a rock stuck in your shoe?” Your health issue has a root cause. We often ignore the underlying cause of health illnesses. Sometimes we have to do a little pruning of the branches, in order for the tree to be healthy again. A number of things can be the reason why you are going through what you are going through with your health.  It could be a wide range of things from celiac disease, Hashimoto’s, leaky gut, autoimmune disease disorder, nutrient deficiency’s, adrenal fatigue, exposure to chemicals, gluten or other food allergies, and hormonal imbalance. It starts with the foods we eat to the chemicals in the environment. Your body can be influenced by many different circumstances.

Many of our “conditions”, “disorders” or “labels” that are put on us can also be linked back to a lack of the proper nutrition and/or vitamins and minerals. Let’s not forget the heavy use of environmental chemicals that is in our water, our air and the products that we use for our body plus homes. Why not do a little research and find what is causing your disorder? Look up what nutritional steps you need to start taking. What environmental things have an effect on your disorder and start avoiding that. Why not give your body a fighting chance to heal the issue at hand with herbs, specific vitamins & other natural supplements? In each stage of our lives our bodies change and we must learn to adapt and adjust what it needs. Trust me when I say, there certainly isn’t a substitute for figuring out the real underlying reason for your “condition”. I am not saying try this solely on your own I would recommend that you get qualified holistic health practitioner or a Naturopath Doctor in your area that will be able to order the appropriate tests for you, and also help you interpret them. Looking at the big picture. Like an onion, you must start to work on each layer and see what needs to be addressed, peeling it back, layer by layer.

I want to arm you with tools that you need to help you start managing your hypothyroidism condition but you have to be willing to give up the things that have made you sick in order to be healed.

The only magical pill for you to swallow is your lifestyle changes. That is where the magic truly happens and it is within yourself.

You have the power to make a difference in your life. You’ve always had the power. No one can force you to become more aware of what you put on your body and what you put in your body. What you eat is just as important as what you put on your body. Adjusting your life, reading labels and catering to your specific health needs isn’t easy but it will benefit you in the long run. This is one of the smartest decisions that you can make. Not only will you start to look and feel better but think of the medical cost that you could be saving your future self.

How would you define good health? Logically one would define good health as absence of a disease or following some sort of ground rules that avoid developing a disease. I wrote this book to help you learn how I beat hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s using clean principles and holistic functional medicine. You will soon start feeling better and to get out of survival mode with Hypothyroidism and Hashimotos along with the redevelopment and healing of your body. Your health doesn’t have to be a difficult situation but a positive realization that things need to change.  Do I have all the answers? Absolutely not but what I have written in this book along with the tips to guide you has worked for me plus many of my clients, colleagues and friends.

This new lifestyle change has many parts to it and I hope you will embrace not only the physical and mental but the spiritual awakening. You must place yourself in the right headspace and be willing to do the work.  It certainly would be nice if one diet, lifestyle change or exercise would work for us all but it won’t.  We are all uniquely wired and biometrically created differently. None of us are the same. We may have similar issues but we are completely different. No matter what, give it your all because deep down you are strong enough to find what works and make it successful for you!

Knowledge is power, always educate yourself and find the answer to your health care needs. Wisdom is a wonderful thing to seek. I hope this book will teach and inspire you to take leaps in your life to educate yourself for a happier & healthier life. The best patient to be is a well informed and an educated patient. The research that I have done for my blogs and my books can make the difference between you having the energy to live your life as you want, or merely dragging yourself through life. Nobody will do more for yourself than you.

You must want to change, be ready to change to start the change.

Everyday small adjustments do equal long term lifestyle goals and changes.

Just think how great it’s going to feel when you are as healthy on the inside as you look on the outside! The ultimate goal isn’t to look fit but to be healthy from the inside out.

You have to take ownership of your health.

One of the most powerful tools to change your health is your fork.

As you read the pages written within the walls of this book you will see that I value natural solutions, authenticity, integrity, family, community and most importantly simplicity.

After 25 years on medication, I am living medication free and my blood work are all within normal ranges. You don’t have to become your diagnosis.

May you have abundant Health, Wealth and Blessings,

A.L. Childers

The HypothyroidismChick’s Protocol: How I beat Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s using clean Keto principles and Holistic functional Medicine

Facts about the Thyroid Gland and Thyroid Disease

Facts about the Thyroid Gland and Thyroid Disease

Facts about the Thyroid Gland and Thyroid Disease

The thyroid is a hormone-producing gland that regulates our body’s metabolism— it affects our major body functions for example your heart rate and energy levels. The thyroid gland determines the rate in which your body produces the energy from nutrients and oxygen. The thyroid gland is located in the middle of the lower neck.

Although the thyroid gland is relatively small, it produces a hormone that influences every cell, tissue and organ in the body. Imagine that!

Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.

The thyroid gland sits on the front of your neck and produces a hormone that impacts EVERY SINGLE CELL, TISSUE, and ORGAN in your entire body. How does it do this? The thyroid gland is responsible for maintaining your body temperature, heart rate, and controlling your metabolism. The thyroid gland is very sensitive, meaning that too much thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and too little TSH can cause detrimental effects throughout your body. You see, the hypothalamus in your brain (a very small gland that is a BIG deal) produces thyroid releasing hormone (or TRH). {When functioning properly, your thyroid gland and hypothalamus become a feedback loop that constantly keep your thyroid levels in “balance.” Think of it as a checks and balances system.} TRH stimulates the pituitary gland to release TSH. TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to actually release the actual thyroid hormones (T3 & T4). T3 & T4 levels are monitored by the pituitary gland which (based upon the amount in free circulation in the bloodstream) either increases or decreases your TRH. And the cycle continues.

So, what happens with those people who have hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is defined as underactive or a low amount of free circulating thyroid hormone (T3 & T4). When the hypothalamus releases TRH, the pituitary stimulates TSH, and T3 & T4 are released. When a person has hypothyroidism, their TSH levels will be elevated but their T3 & T4 levels will be low. These low levels will feed back to the pituitary gland, which will increase TRH, which will increase TSH, and the cycle continues. The brain (hypothalamus that releases TRH) interprets the low levels of T3 & T4 and tries to increase them by increasing TRH and TSH.

A few of the many symptoms are extreme fatigue, depression, forgetfulness, and some weight gain.

It’s estimated that 27 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease and about 13 million (60%) are unaware of their condition and might not ever be diagnosed. Women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems and one woman in eight will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime.

More than 12 percent of the U.S. population will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime.

One woman in eight will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime.

Undiagnosed thyroid disorders can put patients at risk for certain serious conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, and infertility.

Pregnant women with undiagnosed or inadequately treated hypothyroidism have an increased risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery, and severe developmental problems in their children.

Before you heal someone, ask him if he’s willing to give up the things that make him sick.

-Hipporates

Therefore, I ask you this simple question.

Are you willing to give up the things that have made you sick?

50 Years Ago, Sugar Industry Quietly Paid Scientists To Point Blame At Fat

September 13, 20169:59 AM ET

In the 1960s, the sugar industry funded research that downplayed the risks of sugar and highlighted the hazards of fat, according to a newly published article in JAMA Internal Medicine.

The article draws on internal documents to show that an industry group called the Sugar Research Foundation wanted to “refute” concerns about sugar’s possible role in heart disease. The SRF then sponsored research by Harvard scientists that did just that. The result was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1967, with no disclosure of the sugar industry funding.

Sugar Shocked? The Rest Of Food Industry Pays For Lots Of Research, Too

The sugar-funded project in question was a literature review, examining a variety of studies and experiments. It suggested there were major problems with all the studies that implicated sugar, and concluded that cutting fat out of American diets was the best way to address coronary heart disease.

The authors of the new article say that for the past five decades, the sugar industry has been attempting to influence the scientific debate over the relative risks of sugar and fat.

“It was a very smart thing the sugar industry did, because review papers, especially if you get them published in a very prominent journal, tend to shape the overall scientific discussion,” co-author Stanton Glantz told The New York Times.

How The Food Industry Manipulates Taste Buds With ‘Salt Sugar Fat’

In the article, published Monday, authors Glantz, Cristin Kearns and Laura Schmidt aren’t trying make the case for a link between sugar and coronary heart disease. Their interest is in the process. They say the documents reveal the sugar industry attempting to influence scientific inquiry and debate.

The researchers note that they worked under some limitations — “We could not interview key actors involved in this historical episode because they have died,” they write. Other organizations were also advocating concerns about fat, they note.

There’s no evidence that the SRF directly edited the manuscript published by the Harvard scientists in 1967, but there is “circumstantial” evidence that the interests of the sugar lobby shaped the conclusions of the review, the researchers say.

For one thing, there’s motivation and intent. In 1954, the researchers note, the president of the SRF gave a speech describing a great business opportunity.

If Americans could be persuaded to eat a lower-fat diet — for the sake of their health — they would need to replace that fat with something else. America’s per capita sugar consumption could go up by a third.

But in the ’60s, the SRF became aware of “flowing reports that sugar is a less desirable dietary source of calories than other carbohydrates,” as John Hickson, SRF vice president and director of research, put it in one document.

He recommended that the industry fund its own studies — “Then we can publish the data and refute our detractors.”

The next year, after several scientific articles were published suggesting a link between sucrose and coronary heart disease, the SRF approved the literature-review project. It wound up paying approximately $50,000 in today’s dollars for the research.

One of the researchers was the chairman of Harvard’s Public Health Nutrition Department — and an ad hoc member of SRF’s board.

“A different standard” for different studies

Glantz, Kearns and Schmidt say many of the articles examined in the review were hand-selected by SRF, and it was implied that the sugar industry would expect them to be critiqued.

Obesity And The Toxic-Sugar Wars

In a letter, SRF’s Hickson said that the organization’s “particular interest” was in evaluating studies focused on “carbohydrates in the form of sucrose.”

“We are well aware,” one of the scientists replied, “and will cover this as well as we can.”

The project wound up taking longer than expected, because more and more studies were being released that suggested sugar might be linked to coronary heart disease. But it was finally published in 1967.

Hickson was certainly happy with the result: “Let me assure you this is quite what we had in mind and we look forward to its appearance in print,” he told one of the scientists.

The review minimized the significance of research that suggested sugar could play a role in coronary heart disease. In some cases the scientists alleged investigator incompetence or flawed methodology.

“It is always appropriate to question the validity of individual studies,” Kearns told Bloomberg via email. But, she says, “the authors applied a different standard” to different studies — looking very critically at research that implicated sugar, and ignoring problems with studies that found dangers in fat.

Epidemiological studies of sugar consumption — which look at patterns of health and disease in the real world — were dismissed for having too many possible factors getting in the way. Experimental studies were dismissed for being too dissimilar to real life.

One study that found a health benefit when people ate less sugar and more vegetables was dismissed because that dietary change was not feasible.

Another study, in which rats were given a diet low in fat and high in sugar, was rejected because “such diets are rarely consumed by man.”

The Harvard researchers then turned to studies that examined risks of fat — which included the same kind of epidemiological studies they had dismissed when it came to sugar.

Citing “few study characteristics and no quantitative results,” as Kearns, Glantz and Schmidt put it, they concluded that cutting out fat was “no doubt” the best dietary intervention to prevent coronary heart disease.

Sugar lobby: “Transparency standards were not the norm”

In a statement, the Sugar Association — which evolved out of the SRF — said it is challenging to comment on events from so long ago.

“We acknowledge that the Sugar Research Foundation should have exercised greater transparency in all of its research activities, however, when the studies in question were published funding disclosures and transparency standards were not the norm they are today,” the association said.

“Generally speaking, it is not only unfortunate but a disservice that industry-funded research is branded as tainted,” the statement continues. “What is often missing from the dialogue is that industry-funded research has been informative in addressing key issues.”

The documents in question are five decades old, but the larger issue is of the moment, as Marion Nestle notes in a commentary in the same issue of JAMA Internal Medicine:

“Is it really true that food companies deliberately set out to manipulate research in their favor? Yes, it is, and the practice continues. In 2015, the New York Times obtained emails revealing Coca-Cola’s cozy relationships with sponsored researchers who were conducting studies aimed at minimizing the effects of sugary drinks on obesity. Even more recently, the Associated Press obtained emails showing how a candy trade association funded and influenced studies to show that children who eat sweets have healthier body weights than those who do not.”

As for the article authors who dug into the documents around this funding, they offer two suggestions for the future.

“Policymaking committees should consider giving less weight to food industry-funded studies,” they write.

They also call for new research into any ties between added sugars and coronary heart disease.
